Spectroscopy reveals that Italian postage stamps carry a materials history beyond their printed colors: the paper, sizing, mineral additives and gum changed over time, as did the inks. Two studies by Eleonora Imperio, Gabriele Giancane and Ludovico Valli trace those changes across analyzed examples, including a reported shift in orange pigments in 1929 and in blue ink in 1958. The resulting timeline is a research account of stamp materials, not a complete public catalogue of every stamp spectrum.
What spectroscopy can reveal in a stamp
A stamp is a layered object. Its appearance comes from printed inks, but its paper may also contain sizing, mineral fillers or surface coatings, while adhesive gum contributes another material layer. These components can change without an obvious difference to the naked eye.

Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) helps characterize materials through their infrared spectral signatures. The 2013 study used FT-IR to examine stamp materials broadly, including paper and gum. The 2015 study focused on printing inks, combining Raman microscopy with FTIR-ATR—FT-IR measurements using attenuated total reflectance. The authors describe both techniques as non-destructive.
The methods are complementary: one study follows a broad materials history, while the other traces ink composition and considers its potential forensic value. Neither abstract supplies enough detail to treat the work as a spectrum-by-spectrum catalogue of all Italian issues.

How the studies differ
| Study | Main focus | Methods reported | What it contributes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Imperio, Giancane and Valli, 2013 | Paper, sizing, kaolin and gum across roughly 150 years of Italian stamp production | FT-IR spectroscopy, including ATR measurements | A broad account of changes in stamp materials from the unification period onward |
| Imperio, Giancane and Valli, 2015 | Printing inks on examples from the Italian Kingdom and Republic | Raman microscopy with FTIR-ATR | Reported pigment changes and a discussion of potential evidence for recognizing forged exemplars |
The 2013 paper describes stamps as “hybrid or composite materials” with an “undisclosed or hidden story”—the authors’ metaphor for the materials history that analysis can uncover.
What changed in Italian stamp materials
Paper sizing and kaolin
The 2013 study reports a transition in paper sizing from protein glue to starch. It also identifies a change in kaolin’s role: first used as an extender in the pigment-medium mixture, it was later used as a surface coating. These findings show why a stamp’s material history cannot be reduced to its printed design.

Orange, red and green inks
The 2015 study reports that early orange ink combined chrome orange with red ochre; in 1929, that combination was replaced by azo pigments. Red inks changed from cinnabar to red ochre and minium, and eventually to red azo pigments. Early green stamps could be printed with separate blue and orange inks—Prussian blue and chrome orange—while a later green ink was composed mainly of phthalocyanine.

Blue ink
The researchers report that blue printing ink changed from Prussian blue to copper phthalocyanine in 1958. That date is a finding about the examples and chronology described in the study, not proof that every stamp design changed materials simultaneously.

Gum and other material layers
The 2013 FT-IR work reports changes in adhesive gum as well as in paper and front-side materials. The accessible abstract does not specify a detailed gum-by-gum chronology, so it supports the broader conclusion that gum evolved, but not a more granular timeline.
Can spectroscopy authenticate an old Italian stamp?
It can contribute evidence, but the published abstracts do not establish spectroscopy as a standalone authenticity test. The 2015 authors say that combining Raman microscopy and FTIR-ATR “potentially provides direct and fast evidence for the recognition of forged exemplars.” The qualification matters: they present a possible forensic aid, not a universal verdict from a single measurement.

A material signature may help investigate whether an ink or paper is consistent with a reported period. But the accessible publication records do not report sensitivity, specificity, false-positive rates, a complete reference-matching protocol, or proof that a spectrum alone can authenticate any stamp. A collector should not treat a match—or an apparent mismatch—as decisive without other evidence and expert assessment.

The 2013 study describes its scope as the “entire Italian postage stamps production” over roughly 150 years, from the unification period onward. That wording conveys broad historical coverage; it does not establish that every individual issue or specimen was tested. The accessible abstracts do not state a sample count or establish that a complete public spectral database is available.

The chronology is therefore best read as a materials timeline reconstructed from analyzed examples. It shows that Italian stamp production used changing materials and offers useful reference points, but it should not be mistaken for a definitive inventory of every issue, printing, or gum formulation.
