It Takes Two vs. Co‑Op Games With Asymmetric Roles: What’s Different?

It Takes Two is a two-player cooperative adventure that uses asymmetry as one of its design tools, not as its definition of co-op. Both players pursue the same story and shared progress, but the game repeatedly gives them different, connected abilities and tasks. Those differences change from level to level, so Cody and May are not locked into permanent classes.

That makes it different from cooperative games in which everyone has the same tools, and from role-based games in which each player keeps a fixed job. It is also different from a merely asymmetric multiplayer game: unequal abilities do not create cooperation unless players must coordinate toward a common objective.

What makes It Takes Two different?

Electronic Arts describes It Takes Two as built purely for two players. It supports couch co-op and online split-screen, and its feature description says working together is the only way forward. Progress belongs to the pair rather than to either player alone.

The game’s other defining choice is movement. EA says new character abilities appear across levels, that those abilities are unique and connected, and that challenges change throughout the adventure. In practical terms, one player may have a tool or interaction that changes what the other player can do, but the arrangement is not a permanent “tank,” “healer,” or “puzzle player” assignment. The relationship between the abilities keeps changing as the story advances.

EA also presents gameplay and narrative as connected. The developer’s design intention is captured in Josef Fares’s December 10, 2020 PlayStation.Blog introduction: “What we’re really pushing for, is for the story to go hand in hand with the gameplay.” That is a stronger claim than simply placing two players in the same level. The cooperation is meant to express the relationship at the center of the adventure.

Co-op and asymmetry are not the same thing

Co-op describes the goal structure

Co-op, short for cooperative play, describes players working together toward shared progress. The team may be trying to finish a mission, solve a puzzle, survive a scenario, or complete a story. The important test is whether the players’ success is linked to a common objective rather than determined by a direct win-or-lose contest between them.

Co-op does not require different abilities. A game can give both players the same movement, weapons, information, and objectives while still being fully cooperative. Symmetry can make a game easy to learn, because either person can perform the same job when the other is stuck or away from the controls.

Asymmetry describes meaningful differences

Asymmetry is a separate design dimension. Players may differ in their abilities, tasks, information, perspective, or control over the game world. A useful 2024 CHI framework for understanding cooperative games treats these dimensions independently: teammates can coordinate actions, abilities, and roles; share a world view or receive distinct views; and cooperate through direct game actions, communication, or both.

Role differences alone do not make a game cooperative. If two players have unequal powers but are trying to defeat each other, the game is asymmetric competitive play. Conversely, a cooperative game can be highly symmetric, with both players able to perform every major action.

Why the distinction matters

Calling every two-player game with different tools “asymmetric co-op” hides the questions that determine how the experience actually feels. You need to ask what differs, how long the difference lasts, whether the difference is necessary, what each player can see, and whether the pair is pursuing the same outcome.

How It Takes Two uses asymmetric design

Abilities change with the adventure

EA’s description emphasizes new abilities across levels rather than a fixed character sheet. The resulting asymmetry is evolving: the tools that matter in one chapter are not necessarily the tools that define the next. This keeps cooperation from becoming a routine division of labor in which one person always performs the same action.

  • Brand-new haptic feedback and adaptive trigger Technology creates astonishing physical sensations, bringing in-game actions to life in your hands via the dual sense wireless Controller.

Because the abilities are described as connected, the design expects players to notice how one person’s option creates an opening for the other. The useful question is not “Which character is the support class?” but “What can each player do here, and how do those actions combine?”

The pair must coordinate to advance

EA says that working together is the only way forward. That makes the differences functional rather than cosmetic. If a level gives the two players separate interactions, each person’s timing, positioning, or communication can affect the other’s opportunity to progress.

Interdependence can be strict, as when both actions are needed to trigger an event, or conversational, as when one player reports what they see so the other can choose an action. The available evidence supports the broad requirement for cooperation, but it does not establish a single permanent rule for every encounter. The exact balance changes with the level.

Story and mechanics reinforce one another

The game is presented as a narrative adventure as well as a set of cooperative challenges. Fares’s statement about story going hand in hand with gameplay describes an intention to make the pair’s mechanical dependence meaningful within the fiction. That differs from task-led co-op in which the story is largely separate from the players’ division of labor.

A framework for comparing co-op games

Use the following axes instead of assigning a single “asymmetry score.” A game can be strongly asymmetric in abilities but almost identical in information, or it can give players the same tools while showing each person a different part of the world.

Axis Question to ask It Takes Two
Ability and task difference Do partners have different tools or contributions, and how often do those differences change? EA describes unique, connected abilities introduced in new levels; the differences are evolving rather than one permanent class system.
Interdependence Can either player advance alone, or is the other player’s action required? EA says working together is the only way forward in its feature description.
Information and perspective Do both players see and know the same things? The cooperative-games framework distinguishes shared, unique, and distinct world views. The game’s co-op format gives both players a split-screen view, while a particular challenge may still make each person’s information or position useful to the other.
Story and mechanics Does the narrative reflect why the players depend on one another? EA describes gameplay and narrative as merged, and Fares says the story should go hand in hand with gameplay.
Play arrangement Is play local, online, or both, and what does the platform require? EA lists couch and online split-screen co-op. Platform, account, and edition conditions still need to be checked for the chosen version.

It Takes Two compared with common co-op patterns

Symmetric co-op

In a symmetric design, both players usually have the same core movement, attacks, tools, and information. The main challenge is coordination, not learning different rule sets. Symmetry is forgiving: if one person misses a task, the other may be able to perform it instead.

It Takes Two differs because EA foregrounds unique abilities connected across the level. The pair’s options are not simply duplicates, so players must pay attention to who can perform which interaction at that moment. The game still remains cooperative because the differences serve a shared route through the adventure.

Fixed-role co-op

Fixed-role games assign durable jobs such as damage, defense, healing, construction, scouting, or puzzle solving. The role may be selected before a mission and retained across many hours. This creates strategic depth and long-term specialization, but it can also make one player feel responsible for a narrow task.

It Takes Two should not be described as using fixed classes on the available evidence. EA’s wording points to abilities that change across levels. The pair’s relationship is therefore more episodic: players adapt to the current challenge instead of mastering one permanent role each.

Information-asymmetric co-op

Some cooperative designs give each player different information. One person may see a map, code, threat, or mechanism that the other cannot see. Communication becomes part of the control scheme, because success depends on translating observations into actions.

The CHI framework treats shared and distinct world perspectives as a separate comparison axis. That distinction helps explain why two games with identical character abilities can feel very different: one may require constant information exchange, while another lets both players see everything.

Task-led co-op

Task-led co-op is organized around missions, rounds, construction, survival, or other repeatable objectives. Story may provide context, but the main satisfaction comes from executing a plan efficiently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It Takes Two is positioned as a story-led adventure whose challenges and abilities change as the narrative moves forward. That does not remove the importance of tasks; it means the tasks are intended to carry narrative meaning as well as mechanical function.

Asymmetric competitive multiplayer

In asymmetric competitive multiplayer, unequal powers or information are used by opponents with conflicting goals. One player’s success can directly prevent the other’s. That is not what EA’s co-op description means by It Takes Two: the two players are working toward shared progress.

What the two players actually need to do

The most useful way to approach a level is as a sequence of coordination problems rather than as a search for a permanent role.

  1. Identify the current contribution. At the start of a new section, check what each character can interact with and which ability appears to be new. Do not assume that a previous chapter’s solution still applies.
  2. Map the dependency. Ask what one player’s action enables for the other. The dependency may involve timing, position, a shared target, or information communicated over voice or local conversation.
  3. State the next action clearly. Short callouts such as “hold this,” “move left,” or “use your interaction now” reduce simultaneous trial and error. The framework’s emphasis on coordination and communication is relevant even when both players can see the same screen area.
  4. Execute in sequence. Many cooperative interactions fail because both players act at once or because one moves before the other is ready. Agree on who starts, what signal confirms success, and where the other player should be.
  5. Reassess after the transition. A new level can introduce a different ability relationship. Treat each transition as a fresh rules briefing rather than carrying over a fixed class expectation.

This method is intentionally general. EA’s public descriptions establish changing, connected abilities and required cooperation, but they do not provide a complete encounter-by-encounter manual. The exact interaction must be learned from the current scene.

Local and online play: what changes

Couch co-op

EA describes couch co-op with split-screen play. Two people share the same local session and can communicate without an online voice channel. This arrangement makes immediate pointing and conversation easy, but it still requires two compatible control setups and a platform edition that supports the mode.

Online split-screen co-op

EA also describes online split-screen co-op. Online play adds account, network, and platform-service requirements that do not apply in exactly the same way to local play. Check the live requirements for the platform and region before assuming that a particular edition or subscription includes every online feature.

Friend’s Pass

EA says Friend’s Pass allows an invited online player to join without buying the full game when one player owns it, subject to applicable platform and account conditions. In other words, both players do not automatically need to purchase a full copy for online co-op, but the owner must have the full game and the invited player must meet the relevant conditions.

Do not generalize Friend’s Pass into a promise of universal cross-platform play. Availability, account linking, platform support, and edition rules can vary. Confirm the current terms for the exact platform combination before starting a session.

Platforms and availability checks

EA’s official game page reports a Nintendo Switch 2 release announcement dated October 8, 2026, and says players can now play on that platform. Because release timing and editions can vary by region, confirm that the Switch 2 version is available in your country and that its listed play modes match your intended setup.

Nintendo’s official listing identifies the Nintendo Switch version’s play modes and compatibility information. PlayStation’s official listing covers the PS4 and PS5 versions. Those platform pages are the right places to verify supported modes, edition differences, account requirements, and current availability rather than relying on an older retailer description.

For a purchase search, use the platform-specific wording “It Takes Two Nintendo Switch game,” or the equivalent query for PlayStation or another supported platform, then check the edition and seller’s current inventory. Availability and retail listings can change independently of the underlying design.

How to decide whether this style of co-op suits you

Choose evolving asymmetry if you want variety

The changing-ability model suits partners who enjoy learning a new interaction pattern as the story progresses. Neither player has to commit to one job for the entire adventure, and the pair can discover how the current tools fit together.

Choose symmetric co-op if flexibility matters most

A symmetric game may be a better fit when either player should be able to take over any task. This can reduce communication overhead and make a casual drop-in session easier, especially when players have different experience levels.

Choose fixed roles if long-term specialization is the appeal

Fixed-role co-op is appropriate when you want to build expertise in a durable job, optimize a team composition, or plan around a familiar division of labor. Its trade-off is that the team may become dependent on one person’s role.

Choose information asymmetry if communication is the game

If the pleasure comes from describing clues, comparing perspectives, and coordinating without identical information, look for a design that makes those differences explicit. The CHI framework’s distinction between shared and distinct world views is a useful lens for evaluating that experience.

Common misunderstandings

  • “Asymmetric” means competitive. It does not. Asymmetry only says that players differ in some meaningful way; their goals determine whether the game is cooperative or competitive.
  • Different characters always have permanent roles. Not in It Takes Two as described by EA. The published description emphasizes new abilities across levels, so avoid presenting Cody and May as unchanging classes.
  • Every co-op puzzle gives players different information. No. Some games share the same view and tools, while others divide information or perspective.
  • Friend’s Pass means every platform combination works. EA attaches platform and account conditions. Check the live terms for your chosen versions.
  • Two players must always buy two copies. EA says one owner can invite an online player through Friend’s Pass, subject to those conditions.
  • Switch 2 availability is identical everywhere. The announcement is dated October 8, 2026; regional release and edition details still require confirmation.

A precise way to describe the game

The most accurate short description is: It Takes Two is a two-player, shared-goal adventure that uses changing, connected abilities and coordinated challenges to make cooperation part of both its mechanics and its story. It is asymmetric in selected dimensions, especially abilities and tasks, but it is not defined by one permanent role system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That wording avoids two opposite mistakes. Calling it merely “co-op” misses the deliberate differences between players. Calling it a fixed-role asymmetric game overstates what the public descriptions establish. The design is better understood as evolving asymmetry inside a tightly shared campaign.
