Yes—It Takes Two supports both online co-op and local couch co-op, but it is designed for two players and does not offer a solo mode. One player can own the full game while the other joins using the free Friend’s Pass. As of October 7, 2026, EA’s existing guidance describes cross-generation play but not cross-platform play; EA has announced cross-play for the Nintendo Switch 2 release scheduled for October 15, 2026, so that change is forthcoming, not yet confirmed as live.
Can I play It Takes Two online with a friend?
Yes. Both players must be online at the same time, and each needs an applicable first-party platform account. One player hosts from the game’s main menu and can invite one friend at a time; another friend can be invited after the current guest stops playing. The game is co-op-only, so you need a second player whether you play online or on the same couch. EA’s Friend’s Pass FAQ explains invitations and setup.

Does my friend need to buy It Takes Two?
No. If one player owns the full game, the other can download the free, platform-specific Friend’s Pass and accept an invitation. Both players still need compatible platform editions and accounts. The host’s game progression determines where the session can begin, so the host should have reached the point where you want to play.

Does It Takes Two have crossplay?
As of October 7, 2026, EA’s Friend’s Pass FAQ says the game supports cross-generation play but not cross-platform play. Its example is a PlayStation 5 player playing with a PlayStation 4 player; under that guidance, a PlayStation player cannot invite someone playing on Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or PC. EA’s Nintendo Switch page likewise says Switch players need a partner playing the Switch version.
There is a forthcoming change: EA announced that the Nintendo Switch 2 version is scheduled to launch October 15, 2026, with cross-play through Friend’s Pass. Since that date is after the date of this article’s information, treat cross-play as announced, not currently available. The announcement does not establish every supported platform pairing; check EA’s current support information after launch before planning a session across different platform families. Can you play couch co-op offline?
Yes. EA says no internet connection is required for couch co-op. Both players use the same local setup, so this is the option to choose if you want to play together in person without connecting online.

- Two players: the game is co-op-only.
- A full-game owner: one player must own the game; the other can join with Friend’s Pass.
- Online access and accounts: both players must be online at the same time and have applicable first-party platform accounts.
- Compatible platform editions: check the cross-generation and cross-platform support available on the date you intend to play.
- Console online entitlement, where required: EA’s FAQ names Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus, and Xbox Live Gold, while EA Help’s current wording refers to Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus, and Xbox Game Pass. Because subscription names and entitlements can change, confirm the current requirement with your platform’s store or support page.
