There is no single VMware replacement that fits every estate. Broadcom-era licensing, packaging, renewal dates and partner changes have made the decision a planning issue, but the right destination depends on workload mix, operating model, staff skills, hardware, cloud strategy and modernization plans.
Microsoft has published two deadlines for Azure VMware Solution customers: license-included PayGo SKUs retire on 31 October 2026, and license-included services end on 30 August 2027. Customers must move to portable VMware Cloud Foundation licensing or another Azure destination. That makes inventory, proof-of-concept testing, budget and rollback planning urgent rather than optional.

Why VMware alternatives are still on the agenda
Foundry MarketPulse surveyed 561 IT leaders in the United States and Europe during June and July 2024. Fifty-six percent expected to reduce VMware use within 12 months, and 71% of respondents considering alternatives were evaluating on-premises platforms. The same survey found an average estimate of 62 minutes of migration work per virtual machine and 89% expected to assign at least one full-time engineer to a new virtual-machine strategy.

Seventy-two percent of migrated workloads in that study were headed to public-cloud infrastructure as a service, with Hyper-V/Azure Stack and software-as-a-service replacements also appearing in migration plans. These figures describe market direction, not a universal recommendation: many organizations still need local infrastructure for latency, sovereignty, licensing or data-gravity reasons.

Respondents also cited management-tool gaps, staffing and expertise, budget, and the complexity of operating multiple platforms. A hypervisor with familiar VM features can still be a poor choice if the team cannot monitor, patch, back up and recover it consistently.

Which platform fits which estate?
Nutanix AHV for an integrated HCI operating model
AHV is integrated into Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure and managed through Prism. Nutanix describes it as a modern, secure virtualization platform for applications in the datacenter, at the edge and in public clouds. The attraction is a unified HCI experience, built-in data services and a vendor-led migration path using Nutanix Move.
Evaluate the complete Nutanix subscription, required nodes, storage architecture and HCI lock-in rather than comparing only a hypervisor license. AHV is strongest where the organization wants one operating model for compute, storage and virtualization and has the staff to run it.

Hyper-V and Azure Local for Microsoft-centric teams
Microsoft describes Hyper-V as an enterprise-grade type-1 hypervisor built into Windows Server and Windows. Windows Server deployments provide live migration, clustering, high availability, disaster recovery and Azure integration. Azure Local extends the model to Azure services running on customer-controlled infrastructure.
This is a natural shortlist choice for estates already invested in Windows Server, Active Directory, PowerShell, System Center or Azure agreements. Model Windows Server licensing, Azure Local subscription and hardware requirements, Linux support, and who will own day-to-day operations before committing.
OpenShift Virtualization for gradual application modernization
Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization runs traditional VMs alongside containers and serverless workloads on one hybrid-cloud application platform. It is built on KVM, includes migration services and a certified partner ecosystem, and is also offered as OpenShift Virtualization Engine for VM-only deployments.

It fits organizations already investing in Kubernetes or planning to modernize applications in stages while keeping existing VMs online. The trade-off is a broader operating platform: teams must account for Kubernetes skills, storage and networking integrations, subscription scope and any air-gapped deployment requirements.

Proxmox VE for control and lower software cost
Proxmox VE combines the KVM hypervisor, Linux Containers, software-defined storage and networking, web management, high-availability clustering and disaster-recovery tooling. Its documentation covers Windows and Linux VMs, VMware ESXi guest import, enterprise support and training.
It can suit cost-sensitive teams with strong Linux and virtualization expertise that value an open software stack. Compare support subscriptions, hardware validation, backup and disaster-recovery integrations, cluster design and the availability of experienced administrators. A lower software bill does not remove the need for operational engineering.

Cloud and managed destinations when operations or reach matter most
Public-cloud IaaS, managed services and application platforms can reduce hardware ownership, add geographic reach and provide elasticity. They can also introduce data-egress charges, latency, sovereignty concerns, dependency on provider services and application-refactoring work.
Azure VMware Solution can act as a bridge for VMware workloads, but its license-included PayGo SKUs retire on 31 October 2026 and license-included services end on 30 August 2027. Organizations using that bridge should decide early whether to bring portable VMware Cloud Foundation licensing or move to a different Azure destination.

A practical decision framework
- Map the estate. Record each VM’s owner, business criticality, operating system, CPU and memory profile, storage and network dependencies, backup method, software licensing, latency, compliance requirements and recovery objectives.
- Classify the workload. Mark it for retain, rehost, replatform or retire. Do not assume every VM should move unchanged; some are candidates for managed databases, containers or SaaS.
- Shortlist by operating model. Choose HCI, Windows-centric virtualization, Kubernetes-integrated virtualization, open Linux tooling or cloud services according to staff skills and governance, not only feature checklists.
- Pilot representative workloads on at least two platforms. Include a low-risk VM, a high-I/O application, a network-sensitive service and a business-critical dependency. Test conversion, boot, drivers, performance and licensing.
- Test the whole service chain. A successful import is insufficient. Exercise identity, segmentation, monitoring, patching, backup restore, high availability, disaster recovery, security controls and application-owner sign-off.
- Run dual platforms during transition. Keep VMware and the target platform in parallel until performance, resilience, security and recovery objectives are accepted. Define rollback windows before each production move.
- Retire deliberately. Reclaim licenses, storage and network capacity only after backup retention, audit records, dependencies and rollback periods are complete.
Budgeting the migration realistically
The 62-minute average reported by Foundry is a planning signal, not a guaranteed rate. Complex dependencies, large data sets, testing, change windows and failed conversions can multiply the effort. The survey’s finding that 89% expected at least one full-time engineer reinforces that migration is a program of work, not a one-time export.
Build a business case around total platform cost: subscriptions, hardware refresh, backup and disaster recovery, monitoring, training, migration tooling, partner services, cloud connectivity, egress and the cost of running two platforms temporarily. Include a skills plan for the target environment and an owner for every critical workload.
What a successful outcome looks like
The best VMware alternative is the platform your team can operate predictably for the next five to seven years while meeting application, recovery, security and modernization goals. For some organizations that is AHV’s integrated HCI model; for others it is Hyper-V and Azure Local, OpenShift Virtualization, Proxmox VE or a cloud destination. The defensible choice comes from measured pilots, explicit rollback criteria and a staged migration rather than a license comparison alone.
