Current problems instead cluster around slow or unstable connections, DNS and IP behavior, protocol and port compatibility, split tunneling, port forwarding, streaming blocks, and platform-specific bugs. The fastest solution is to identify which category matches your symptom, test one variable at a time, and verify the result before changing providers.
Fast triage: match the symptom to the first test
| Symptom | Most likely causes | First safe test |
|---|---|---|
| PIA says connected, but nothing loads | Kill Switch, DNS, IPv4/IPv6, adapter or firewall conflict | Disconnect PIA, confirm ordinary internet works, then reconnect with a nearby server and check DNS |
| Slow downloads or browsing | Server distance, congestion, routing, protocol overhead or fragmentation | Run a baseline speed test, then try WireGuard and another nearby server |
| High ping or packet loss | Distance, ISP routing, overloaded server, transport or MTU problems | Compare latency without PIA, use a nearby server, WireGuard and small packets |
| PIA will not connect | Unreachable server or port, blocked protocol, stale adapter, security software | Try another region, WireGuard, then OpenVPN UDP/TCP and another port |
| DNS or IP leak warning | Incorrect resolver, IPv6/WebRTC exposure or a misleading test | Record your IP before connection, reconnect, then run separate IPv4, IPv6 and DNS tests |
| Split tunneling fails | Application routing and DNS are taking different paths | Disable split tunneling temporarily and test the application with DNS handling documented |
| Port forwarding stopped working | Changed forwarded port, unsupported location, firewall or application binding | Obtain the current assigned port after reconnecting and update the application |
| Streaming service is blocked | Known VPN IP range, DNS mismatch, cookies or account-region checks | Try another PIA location and test the specific service rather than the VPN generally |
Is PIA down right now?
Do not treat scattered Reddit complaints as proof of an outage. Check PIA’s support and contact channel, then perform controlled comparisons:
- Test two or more geographically different PIA locations.
- Try the same device on a phone hotspot or another network.
- Disconnect PIA and verify that ordinary internet access works.
- Check whether every device fails or only one client.
- Note any PIA or operating-system update immediately before the failure.
If only one location fails, suspect that server or its route. If all locations fail on several devices and networks, document the times, protocols and locations before contacting support; that is stronger evidence than a single failed connection.
Before changing settings: establish a baseline
- Disconnect PIA and confirm that websites and the affected application work.
- Run a speed test on the same device and network you will use for comparison.
- Record the public IPv4 address and, where applicable, IPv6 address.
- Write down the device, operating system, PIA version, network type and affected application.
- Reconnect PIA to a nearby location and record the displayed latency, protocol and result.
This separates a VPN problem from an ISP, router or application problem and prevents several changes from hiding the actual cause.

PIA connects, but the internet stops working
A connection indicator only confirms that the tunnel negotiated; it does not prove that DNS, routing and applications are healthy. PIA identifies protocol and port reachability, IPv4/IPv6 compatibility, packet size and DNS conflicts as common variables in its connection troubleshooting guide.
Check the Kill Switch first
A Kill Switch can intentionally block all traffic when the tunnel is unavailable. For diagnosis only, note its current state, temporarily disable it, and test. If traffic returns, repair the tunnel, adapter, DNS or server path rather than leaving protection off. Local-network access may also be blocked; test a printer, NAS, smart-home device or router separately.
Then isolate DNS and adapters
- Try another PIA server and protocol.
- Flush the operating system DNS cache after changing DNS or adapters.
- Temporarily remove conflicts from another VPN, virtual adapter, antivirus, firewall or filtering application.
- Check IPv4 and IPv6 separately; a broken IPv6 path can make some destinations fail while others work.
- On Windows, repair or reinstall the PIA TAP/network adapter and reboot.
Slow speeds: determine whether PIA is the cause
Follow PIA’s slow-speed guidance in this order:
- Compare a no-VPN baseline with PIA disconnected.
- Reconnect to a nearby server with a low displayed latency.
- Try WireGuard.
- Test a second nearby location and then another region.
- Enable small packets if pages stall, downloads intermittently stop or fragmentation is suspected.
- Repeat at another time of day.
If the baseline is already slow, PIA is unlikely to be the primary cause. If only one server is slow, change servers. If nearby servers are slow but distant ones perform better, investigate ISP routing or regional congestion. Throughput that looks acceptable while pages stall points more toward DNS, packet loss, MTU or blocked destinations than raw bandwidth.
High ping, lag and packet loss
VPN latency includes the physical distance to the server, server load, ISP routing, protocol overhead and retransmissions. PIA’s latency guide recommends a closer server, WireGuard and small packets.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Measure latency and packet loss without PIA.
- Select the nearest suitable PIA location.
- Use WireGuard and enable small packets.
- Compare several tests rather than relying on one ping.
- Repeat on another network if possible to expose ISP routing problems.
A 2026 Reddit report described packet loss that disappeared when OpenVPN used TCP 443 or UDP 8080 instead of default ports. That is an anecdotal, network-specific workaround, not evidence of a universal PIA defect.

Source for the reported workaround
PIA will not connect
- Try a nearby location and at least one other region.
- Switch to WireGuard. If it fails, test OpenVPN.
- With OpenVPN, test both UDP and TCP and a different remote port where the client permits it.
- Temporarily test without another VPN, virtual adapter, firewall rule or security filter.
- Check the system date and time and reauthenticate if the client reports an account error.
- On Windows, repair or reinstall the PIA adapter, reboot, and test again.
Re-enable security controls after diagnosis. Do not permanently solve a connection problem by leaving the Kill Switch or antivirus disabled.
WireGuard versus OpenVPN: which should you try?
| Protocol | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| WireGuard | Speed, lower latency and a simpler first test | Usually exposes fewer transport and remote-port choices in the PIA app |
| OpenVPN | A restrictive network needs TCP/UDP or alternate-port controls | Can add overhead and may be slower |
Changing protocol is a diagnostic experiment, not proof that one is universally safer or better. Neither protocol fixes a bad server, DNS failure, ISP interference or a damaged local adapter.
DNS, IPv6 and IP-leak checks
Recognize the symptoms
- PIA says connected but domains do not resolve.
- Some websites work while others fail.
- Browsing resumes immediately after disconnecting.
- DNS remains broken after disconnecting.
- Only a browser or split-tunneled application fails.
Verify instead of trusting a warning
- Record your public IP before connecting.
- Connect PIA and check the public IP again.
- Run a DNS-leak test and identify the resolvers used.
- Test IPv4 and IPv6 separately.
- Check WebRTC behavior in the browser that matters.
- Disconnect, flush DNS, reconnect and repeat.
A VPN-associated address is not an IP leak, and a legitimate local or IPv6 address on a test page is not automatically proof of exposure. PIA’s IP-leak troubleshooting document explains the relevant checks.
PIA’s March 19, 2026 changelog records a macOS 26 fix for DNS not always being restored after disconnecting. It also records split DNS being turned off by default on Windows and Linux, while remaining available as a setting. This makes DNS restoration and split-DNS state especially important on current installations.

PIA’s settings guide documents both local-network control and split-tunneling behavior: basic client settings.

Kill Switch
Confirm whether the Kill Switch is blocking traffic during a failed handshake. Test local-network access separately, then restore the intended protection state.
Split tunneling
Distinguish three questions: which application is routed outside the VPN, which is routed through it, and where that application’s DNS queries go. On Windows and Linux, PIA says split tunneling also applies to DNS traffic. An application can therefore appear excluded yet fail because name resolution follows the wrong path. Disable split tunneling temporarily, test the application, then add one rule at a time. Browser extensions do not necessarily follow the full desktop client’s rules.

Port forwarding and torrenting
PIA port forwarding is server- and location-dependent. The assigned port can change after reconnecting, so the torrent client or service must be updated. The application must listen on the VPN interface, its firewall rule must allow it, and the service must actually be running. Port forwarding alone does not guarantee inbound reachability.
- Connect to a location that supports forwarding.
- Obtain the currently assigned port using PIA’s Next Generation Port Forwarding procedure.
- Enter that port in the torrent client or server.
- Bind the application to the PIA interface and allow it through the firewall.
- Retest after every reconnect.
Users reported changing port-forwarding or IP behavior in 2026, while another report said a problem was resolved by July 13, 2026. These conflicting reports do not establish a permanent service-wide change.

Streaming services block known VPN address ranges and may also compare DNS, cookies, account country and device location. One PIA server can work while another is blocked, and reconnecting can assign a different address. Split tunneling can create a browser/DNS mismatch.

Try another PIA location, clear only the relevant site session if appropriate, and test the exact service and country you need. A July 2026 TechRadar review reported successful access to multiple Netflix regions during its testing, while noting that reliability depends on changing provider IP pools. No VPN server is permanently guaranteed to bypass every platform’s blocking.
Browser-extension and platform-specific issues
Browser extensions
The browser extension is separate from the full VPN client. Update it, disable and re-enable it, or remove and reinstall it. Check browser and operating-system disk usage and test the full client independently. A June 2026 Edge-user report claimed more than 100 GB of disk writes and said support resolved the issue in version 5.0.3.1795 released June 24; this is an unverified, version-specific report.
Windows
Focus on the TAP adapter, IPv4/IPv6, split tunneling, firewall rules and leftover adapters from other VPNs or network utilities.
macOS
Check DNS restoration after disconnecting, particularly on macOS 26, and test browser and local-network behavior separately.

Linux
Manual WireGuard/OpenVPN profiles, routing tables, port forwarding and Kill Switch rules can interact. Inspect routes and logs rather than assuming the graphical client and manual configuration are equivalent.
Android and iOS
Check battery optimization, background restrictions, permissions and transitions between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Test a different protocol after each network change.
Routers and manual configurations
Review MTU, NAT, firmware, stale credentials and the age of imported configuration files. Router labels and supported protocols vary by model.
Collect logs and contact support
After recording the baseline, locations, protocols, timestamps and exact error, generate debug logs and open a ticket through PIA’s troubleshooting resources or contact page. Include whether the failure reproduces on another network, whether WireGuard and OpenVPN differ, and whether DNS or IP tests changed. That information is more actionable than “PIA is broken.”

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When fixing PIA makes more sense than switching
- Only one server or device fails.
- WireGuard, another location or an alternate OpenVPN port resolves the problem.
- The cause is a local adapter, DNS, firewall or split-tunnel conflict.
- You need unlimited simultaneous connections, Linux support, P2P or port forwarding.
- IP and DNS checks pass after the fix.
When switching providers is reasonable
- Several nearby servers fail for a sustained period across devices and networks.
- A reproducible port-forwarding problem remains essential to your workflow.
- Your required streaming services repeatedly fail after location testing.
- You want a simpler client with fewer networking decisions.
- Support cannot explain a documented, repeatable fault.
- You cannot verify that Kill Switch and DNS handling protect the traffic you care about.
Do not switch solely because of one slow server, one blocked website or one Reddit thread.

The Bottom Line
PIA problems are usually diagnosable rather than one universal failure. Establish a no-VPN baseline, test another location, change protocol, check packet size, then verify DNS, IP behavior, Kill Switch and split tunneling. Switch only when the same, documented failure persists across servers, devices or networks—or when PIA’s advanced feature set is less valuable to you than a simpler alternative.
