Isothermal Microcalorimetry vs. Accelerating Rate Calorimetry for Battery Safety Testing

Use isothermal microcalorimetry (IMC) to measure the heat a battery produces while operating at a controlled temperature. Use accelerating rate calorimetry (ARC) to determine when a cell begins self-heating and how temperature and pressure develop as it approaches thermal runaway under nearly adiabatic conditions. They answer different questions, so neither is a universal replacement for the other. Choose according to the failure mechanism, sample, boundary condition and data needed for the safety decision.

IMC and ARC answer different battery-safety questions

The most useful distinction is the thermal boundary condition. IMC keeps the cell near a selected temperature and resolves small changes in heat flow during normal operation, aging or side reactions. ARC reduces heat loss so that the sample’s own self-heating drives the temperature rise; the instrument follows the resulting temperature and pressure response.

Decision axis Isothermal microcalorimetry (IMC) Accelerating rate calorimetry (ARC)
Primary condition Cell held at a controlled, essentially constant temperature Near-adiabatic environment in which the cell temperature follows self-heating
Main question How much heat is generated during controlled operation, and which reactions produce it? When does self-heating begin, and how do temperature and pressure progress toward failure?
Typical battery applications Charge and discharge heat, entropic and polarization heat, phase changes, aging and parasitic reactions Thermal stability, runaway onset and progression, pressure release and decomposition behavior
Core outputs Heat-flow rate and cumulative heat; electrical measurements can be synchronized with the thermal signal Temperature and pressure versus time; voltage, gas collection and visual observations are possible when the apparatus includes them
Important limitation Thermal inertia in the calorimeter and holder can smooth or delay fast heat-flow features Near-adiabatic results do not automatically reproduce processing, storage, shipping or pack conditions; scaling and interpretation are required
Best fit Operational thermal characterization and detection of low-level reactions Safety-hazard and thermal-runaway characterization

The evidence supports these distinct use cases, not a universal performance ranking. A program that needs both operating heat data and abuse-response data can use both methods, provided the different conditions are reported explicitly.

What isothermal microcalorimetry measures

Controlled-temperature heat flow

In an IMC experiment, a cell is placed in a calorimeter maintained at a selected temperature. The instrument measures the rate at which heat enters or leaves the measurement system relative to a reference. Integrating the signal gives cumulative heat over a charge, discharge, rest or storage interval. Because the cell is not allowed to heat freely, the result describes heat generation under the imposed thermal condition rather than a runaway trajectory.

The 2026 review by David J. Arnot, Wenzao Li, Nicholas Von Stein, Shan Yan, Esther Takeuchi, Amy C. Marschilok and Kenneth Takeuchi describes battery IMC as capable of quantifying heat flow with microwatt (or better) accuracy and precision. That figure describes the capability summarized in the review, not a guarantee for every instrument, holder, cell size or test protocol.

Processes IMC can separate or reveal

Heat measured during cycling can contain several contributions. Reversible entropic heat changes with the cell’s state of charge and thermodynamic state. Irreversible polarization heat is associated with electrical resistance and overpotential. Additional heat can arise from phase transitions, structural changes and parasitic chemical reactions. IMC lets a researcher examine these contributions as functions of state of charge, current, temperature and elapsed time when the electrical and thermal measurements are synchronized.

A 2014 study by L. E. Downie, S. R. Hyatt, A. T. B. Wright and J. R. Dahn used IMC with lithium-ion pouch cells to distinguish polarization and entropic heat flow from heat associated with parasitic reactions. The cells included high-voltage LiCoO₂/graphite and NMC442/graphite chemistries. This is an example of controlled-operation heat analysis; it was not a direct head-to-head comparison with ARC.

Why high sensitivity does not mean unlimited speed

Calorimeter components, the cell holder and surrounding thermal masses do not respond instantaneously. A peer-reviewed study by Alexander Kunz, Clara Berg, Franziska Friedrich, Hubert A. Gasteiger and Andreas Jossen identifies this thermal inertia as a low-pass limitation: a rapidly changing heat signal can appear broadened, delayed or reduced in amplitude. Their optimized holder and signal-processing approach were intended to improve time resolution.

For a transient event, report the instrument response and any correction or deconvolution used. Do not present every IMC trace as an instantaneous record of the cell’s internal reaction. If the question depends on millisecond-scale or very sharp heat release, verify that the calorimeter’s time constant is shorter than the phenomenon being studied or use a complementary technique.

What accelerating rate calorimetry measures

Near-adiabatic self-heating

ARC is designed to minimize heat loss while a sample undergoes a physico-chemical change. ASTM E1981-26 describes a calorimetric device that obtains temperature and pressure as functions of time under nearly adiabatic conditions and uses those measurements to calculate thermodynamic parameters. The guide lists a typical instrument range from ambient temperature to 500 °C, while noting that the usable range can be specified by the user.

Because the chamber follows the sample’s temperature, a small exotherm can raise the temperature and accelerate the reaction. The resulting feedback reveals the conditions at which self-heating becomes detectable and how the event develops. ARC therefore addresses the question commonly phrased as, “Which calorimeter is used for battery thermal-runaway testing?” ARC is the direct calorimetric choice for runaway-onset and progression work, although a complete safety program normally requires additional abuse tests.

Heat-wait-seek procedure

Battery ARC methods commonly use a heat-wait-seek sequence:

  1. Heat: raise the cell or chamber to a programmed temperature increment.
  2. Wait: allow the sample and apparatus to approach thermal equilibrium.
  3. Seek: monitor the temperature rate for evidence of self-heating. If the criterion is not met, proceed to the next increment; if it is met, follow the accelerating exotherm.

The exact increment size, waiting time and self-heating criterion are method and instrument parameters. They must be stated with the results because they affect the reported onset temperature and the amount of reaction captured between observations.

Measurements that can accompany temperature

ARC can record pressure as well as temperature. Depending on the cell fixture and chamber, the experiment can also log cell voltage, collect gases for analysis and document visual changes such as venting, swelling or decomposition. A peer-reviewed methods paper on commercial lithium-ion cells describes collecting runaway onset, the separator-melting endotherm, pressure release, gases, maximum reaction temperature and visual evidence. Those outputs are not automatic features of every ARC installation; they depend on sensors, containment and the experimental design.

A NIOSH study published June 29, 2020, illustrates the approach with commercial lithium iron phosphate (LFP), lithium titanate (LTO) and nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries. Researchers placed cells in a sealed steel canister and monitored voltage plus temperatures at the cell surface, the canister air and the canister surface while external heat drove the cells toward failure. The study demonstrates ARC-based safety research across chemistries; it does not establish a universal safety ranking for those chemistries.

Why ARC results need scaling and careful interpretation

Near-adiabatic is not the same as real-world

ARC deliberately suppresses heat loss to expose intrinsic self-heating. A cell in a vehicle pack, warehouse, charger, shipping container or manufacturing line has different heat sinks, contact resistance, restraints, ventilation and neighboring cells. ASTM E1981-26 cautions that ARC data seldom directly simulate real processing, storage or shipping events without suitable scaling. Use the measurements to derive hazard parameters or feed a model, then validate the interpretation against the physical configuration of interest.

Total runaway energy is not an energy-path breakdown

ARC can provide the total energy yield from a cell during thermal runaway, but that total does not by itself tell you how much energy was conducted through the casing and how much was carried out in hot gases, ejecta or flames. A NASA technical article published September 4, 2019, describes a separate calorimeter for 18650-sized cells that measures total energy while determining conducted and vented fractions separately. This distinction matters when estimating thermal propagation to adjacent cells or sizing cooling and barriers.

Direct comparison for a test-planning decision

If your question is… Prefer… Reason
How much heat does a cell generate during a specified charge or discharge? IMC The cell remains at controlled temperature while heat flow is resolved over the operating cycle.
How do heat contributions vary with state of charge, current or time? IMC Electrical data and heat-flow data can be aligned to operating conditions.
Are slow parasitic reactions occurring during storage or aging? IMC Microwatt-level sensitivity can expose heat that does not produce a visible temperature excursion.
At what temperature does self-heating emerge? ARC The heat-wait-seek sequence searches for the onset of self-heating under near-adiabatic conditions.
What temperature and pressure trajectory accompanies runaway? ARC Temperature and pressure are recorded as functions of time; additional channels can be added.
How much energy is conducted versus vented? A dedicated energy-partition calorimeter, potentially alongside ARC Standard ARC total energy does not separate those pathways.
Will a cell pass a regulatory certification test? Neither method alone ASTM E1981-26 is a thermal-stability guide, not a battery pass/fail certification.

How to choose a method step by step

  1. Write the safety question in physical terms. Choose operating heat, degradation heat, self-heating onset, pressure release, maximum reaction temperature or energy propagation. Avoid starting with the instrument name.
  2. Define the thermal boundary condition. Select controlled temperature for IMC or near-adiabatic tracking for ARC. If the real hazard involves a heat sink, vent path or neighboring cell, note that neither boundary condition reproduces it automatically.
  3. Fix the sample definition. Record chemistry, form factor, capacity, state of charge, age, cycle history and any preconditioning. A result from one pouch format or cylindrical size should not be generalized to every cell using the same cathode label.
  4. List required channels before booking the test. IMC may need current, voltage and state-of-charge synchronization. ARC may need pressure, multiple temperature locations, voltage, gas sampling or high-speed visual observation. The fixture must support the channels safely.
  5. Check time response. For IMC, compare the calorimeter and holder thermal time constant with the shortest event of interest. For ARC, define the heat-wait-seek increments and self-heating criterion so the onset is reproducible.
  6. Define the decision model. Decide whether the result will estimate operating heat, parameterize a thermal model, identify a screening threshold or characterize an abuse hazard. ARC values may require scaling before they can be used in a pack or shipping analysis.
  7. Plan confirmation tests. Use replicate cells and, where the decision involves a different boundary condition, add a complementary method rather than treating one measurement as a substitute for the other.

Designing an IMC battery experiment

1. Establish the operating program

Specify temperature, current profile, upper and lower voltage limits, rest periods, state-of-charge window and storage duration. Include the conditioning cycles needed to make the cell state comparable across replicates. If the goal is parasitic heat, include a long enough hold to distinguish a slow reaction from baseline drift.

2. Stabilize and baseline the calorimeter

Allow the holder and cell to reach the selected temperature before interpreting heat flow. Measure an empty-holder or reference baseline using the same wiring and configuration. Electrical leads, fixtures and environmental changes can contribute to the signal, so keep them identical between baseline and cell runs.

3. Synchronize electrochemical and thermal data

Record current, voltage, elapsed time and temperature alongside heat flow. Align timestamps before separating reversible, irreversible and parasitic contributions. Report whether cumulative heat was obtained by integrating a corrected signal and how baseline drift was handled.

4. Account for response smoothing

Document the holder design, calibration and signal-processing method. A fast current step may appear as a broadened thermal feature because of thermal inertia. If response correction is applied, show the assumptions and confirm that it does not amplify noise into a false reaction peak.

5. Interpret the result at the tested condition

An IMC heat-flow rate belongs to the tested cell, temperature, current and state of charge. It can inform thermal-management and degradation models, but it does not establish the temperature or pressure path of an unconstrained runaway event.

Designing an ARC battery experiment

1. Define the abuse or stability scenario

Specify whether the objective is onset screening, runaway progression, pressure behavior, gas analysis or maximum reaction temperature. Select the cell state of charge, preconditioning and external-heating history to match that objective. Record the cell’s form factor and containment arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Configure containment and sensors

Use a chamber and holder rated for the expected temperature and pressure. Decide where temperature sensors will be placed, such as on the cell, in the surrounding gas and on the container. Add voltage, pressure transducers, gas collection and visual recording when those observations are part of the question. The sealed steel-canister arrangement used in the NIOSH example is one study configuration, not a universal requirement.

3. Set the heat-wait-seek parameters

Document starting temperature, increments, waiting periods and the self-heating threshold. These settings determine how finely the onset is located and how much low-rate reaction occurs between search points. Use the same procedure for comparative samples unless the reason for a change is recorded.

4. Capture the complete event

Continue recording temperature, pressure and configured auxiliary channels through venting, decomposition and cooling. Preserve synchronized timestamps so pressure release, voltage collapse and temperature acceleration can be compared. Follow the laboratory’s hazard controls for hot, pressurized and potentially flammable products.

5. Report what the setup can and cannot show

State whether the reported energy is total yield, whether vented material was collected, and whether the casing-conducted fraction was measured independently. Include chamber geometry, sensor locations, sample condition and any scaling used to relate the result to a pack or other application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common interpretation errors and their fixes

  • Calling IMC a runaway test. IMC measures controlled-condition heat flow. Add ARC or another abuse method when self-heating and pressure evolution are the questions.
  • Calling ARC an operating-heat measurement. Near-adiabatic runaway data should not be substituted for charge/discharge heat under a defined cooling condition. Use IMC for that operating map.
  • Comparing onset temperatures without method details. Onset depends on sample state, heat-wait-seek settings, sensor placement and self-heating criterion. Report all of them.
  • Ignoring IMC thermal inertia. A smooth trace may reflect the holder’s response rather than a slow cell reaction. Characterize and, where justified, correct the response.
  • Extrapolating one cell to a pack. Neighboring cells, compression, cooling paths and vent direction alter propagation. Use suitable scaling and complementary pack-level tests.
  • Treating total ARC energy as conducted heat. Total yield does not identify the fraction entering adjacent hardware. Use a calorimeter designed to partition conducted and vented energy.
  • Using the ASTM guide as a certification claim. ASTM E1981-26 describes thermal-stability procedures and calculations; it does not certify that a battery passes a regulatory requirement.
  • Assuming chemistry labels determine the outcome. LFP, LTO and NMC are represented in the NIOSH study, but cell design, state of charge, age, containment and test conditions also control the result.

Using IMC and ARC together

Sequence A: operation first, hazard second

Use IMC to map heat generation during cycling, storage and aging. Select states of charge or aged conditions that show meaningful changes, then examine those defined samples with ARC to determine whether their self-heating onset or runaway progression changes. Keep the IMC and ARC boundary conditions separate when interpreting the relationship.

Sequence B: hazard first, mechanism second

Use ARC to identify an onset region, pressure event or decomposition stage. Prepare controlled IMC experiments around the relevant operating or storage conditions to investigate slower parasitic heat or reversible changes that may precede the hazard. IMC can explain low-level heat sources; it cannot recreate the ARC event under isothermal control.

Modeling and scale-up

IMC can provide operating heat-generation terms, while ARC can provide self-heating and reaction parameters for a hazard model. A model still needs the correct thermal masses, contact resistances, vent paths and geometry for the target pack or enclosure. Validate predictions against the intended physical configuration rather than transferring a calorimeter trace directly.

Standards and evidence to cite in a report

ASTM lists E1981-26 as the active edition of its guide for assessing thermal stability by accelerating rate calorimetry, with a listing last updated February 23, 2026. The guide’s scope is temperature and pressure measurements under nearly adiabatic conditions and calculations derived from them. Check the current edition when planning work because standards and wording can change.

The battery IMC review appeared in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society in 2026. The parasitic-heat study appeared in the December 26, 2014 issue of The Journal of Physical Chemistry C. The NIOSH battery ARC study was published June 29, 2020, and the NASA calorimetry article was published September 4, 2019. These sources establish complementary capabilities and limitations; they do not constitute a universal, quantitative contest proving one instrument class superior for every battery-safety application.

Bottom-line selection rule

Choose IMC when the decision depends on heat generated during controlled charging, discharging, storage, aging or parasitic chemistry. Choose ARC when the decision depends on the emergence and progression of self-heating, runaway temperature or pressure under near-adiabatic conditions. If both operating performance and hazard propagation matter, run both methods with the sample state, instrumentation, boundary condition and scaling assumptions documented for each.
