Yes—if you want a different, action-focused game and have room for another live-service routine. If turn-based play is the main reason you enjoy Honkai: Star Rail (HSR), your storage is limited, or another ongoing game feels like work, you can comfortably wait or skip Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ). ZZZ is a separate urban-fantasy action RPG, not an extension of Star Rail, so the decision is about variety and capacity rather than which game is objectively better.
The short answer: try ZZZ for variety, not shared progress
HoYoverse describes Zenless Zone Zero as an urban fantasy action RPG built around switching characters, skills, QTE combos and roguelike gameplay. That gives an existing Star Rail player a substantially different way to play, even though both are ongoing HoYoverse titles. The available official material does not provide a publisher-authored, head-to-head combat comparison, so it would be misleading to declare one game superior.

Use this rule of thumb:
- Start ZZZ if you are curious about action-oriented combat, character switching, New Eridu’s setting, or the announced ZZZ × HSR collaboration.
- Wait or skip it if turn-based play is the specific appeal of HSR, your phone or PC is short on storage, or adding another live-service schedule sounds tiring.
There is no documented cross-game transfer of characters, inventory or progression. Cross-save lets you continue each title on supported devices, but it does not merge the two games.

Combat is the clearest reason to install it
ZZZ’s official description emphasizes action-oriented combat, switching among characters, skills, quick-time-event (QTE) combos and roguelike gameplay. In practical terms, that means your attention is directed toward active encounters and swapping characters rather than only selecting commands from a turn order. The contrast is useful as a preference test: if you want a more hands-on routine than Star Rail provides, ZZZ offers that change; if you prefer planning turns and managing a battle at a measured pace, its action focus may not appeal.

Do not treat this as a claim that ZZZ has deeper combat or that HSR is easier. Current official sources do not establish a comparable measure of depth, difficulty, rewards or time required. They establish that ZZZ is action-focused, which is enough to make combat style the most important deciding factor.
The setting is a separate attraction
ZZZ takes place in the urban-fantasy world of New Eridu. Its setting, characters and story are independent of Star Rail’s progression. You are not extending an existing Star Rail account when you begin; you are starting another title with its own roster and systems. That separation can be a benefit if you want a new cast and atmosphere, but it also means learning another game rather than adding a small side mode to HSR.
Should the announced crossover change your decision?
HoYoverse announced Version 3.3, “Journey to the Sky,” on October 12, 2026, with a scheduled release date of October 21, 2026. The announcement includes a main-story mech combat experience with melee and ranged modes, new S-Rank Agents Phoenix and Severian, and additional content. The same announcement says the ZZZ × HSR collaboration trailer is live. A trailer confirms that a collaboration has been announced; it does not, by itself, confirm playable crossover characters, an event date, shared rewards or physical merchandise. Do not install on the assumption that your Star Rail characters will appear in ZZZ or that progress will carry between games.
The crossover is therefore a timely reason to sample ZZZ, not proof that you need to maintain both games. If you are already curious, starting before or around the announced update may make sense. If the only attraction is owning a crossover item, wait for HoYoverse to publish concrete event details.
Account, platform and cross-save details
HoYoverse documents cross-save within each game when you use the same HoYoverse account. The support page lists ZZZ synchronization across PC, iOS, Android, PlayStation and Xbox. HSR synchronization is listed across PC, iOS, Android and PlayStation. Check the account and platform instructions in HoYoverse’s cross-platform data guide before you begin.

When you install, sign in with the account you intend to keep using. A platform login that is not linked correctly can make a new game profile appear, which is an account setup problem rather than evidence that cross-save is unavailable.
Storage and hardware: check this before downloading
Storage is a real barrier for some players. HoYoverse’s minimum-requirements article, updated August 26, 2025, lists the following figures for ZZZ:

These are dated published minimums, not a guarantee of future patch size or performance. Updates can change storage needs, and “available” space is different from the capacity printed on a device. Read the current HoYoverse minimum-requirements page immediately before installing.

For a Star Rail player, the practical question is cumulative capacity. If HSR already occupies most of your phone or SSD, adding ZZZ may force you to remove other apps or keep one game on another device. Do not install a system-cleanup utility merely because a game has a large footprint; the requirement is for free storage, not a separate optimization product.
Controller support and input choices
HoYoverse’s support article, updated October 8, 2025, states: Controller support is currently available only on PC.
It lists DualSense, DualSense Edge, DualShock 4, Xbox wireless and Xbox Elite wireless controllers as supported for ZZZ on PC. The same article says mobile controller use was not supported at that time. See the complete list in HoYoverse’s controller and platform support article.

A controller is optional, not a requirement for starting ZZZ. If you already own a listed PC controller, it can make the action emphasis more comfortable. Do not assume that a controller working on PC will work on iOS or Android, and verify an individual model before buying it.

Time commitment: what can and cannot be concluded
Playing both games may create another set of daily or weekly tasks, but no current official source establishes comparable routine time estimates for ZZZ and HSR. That means there is no evidence-based number of minutes or hours to promise you.
Instead, make the decision from your own schedule:
- Choose both when you are comfortable maintaining two separate games and are willing to let one take priority during busy periods.
- Try ZZZ casually when you want to sample its combat without committing to every event or banner.
- Stay with HSR when another login cycle would feel like an obligation rather than entertainment.
Do not assume ZZZ is automatically quicker, more generous or easier to keep up with. Those comparisons require current, comparable data that is not established here.
Spending and account safety
HoYoverse provides official web top-up centers for both games and instructs users to select the correct game account and server. This confirms that paid top-ups exist; it does not show that spending is necessary to try ZZZ or prove which title offers better value. Keep “Is it worth installing?” separate from “Is it worth spending on?”
If you do purchase anything, use the official top-up flow, check the selected title, account and server before paying, and keep receipts. Avoid treating a crossover announcement as a reason to spend before event mechanics, availability and dates are published. The relevant account guidance is in HoYoverse’s web top-up instructions.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify your desired change. If you want action-oriented encounters, switching characters and QTE-based interactions, ZZZ addresses that need. If you want more of the same turn-based Star Rail experience, it may not.
- Check the date-sensitive news. Version 3.3 is announced for October 21, 2026, and the collaboration trailer is live. Treat both as announcements, not as proof that every advertised feature is already playable.
- Measure free storage. Compare your device’s available space with the dated ZZZ figures, remembering that PC installation also lists 58 GB for the unzip process.
- Confirm your platform and input. ZZZ supports cross-save on PC, iOS, Android, PlayStation and Xbox with the same HoYoverse account. Controller support cited by HoYoverse is PC-only and covers the listed PlayStation and Xbox models.
- Decide your commitment level. You can sample ZZZ without promising to complete every event. There is no need to delete HSR or transfer your attention permanently.
- Keep expectations separate. Separate saves, currencies and progression mean that success or purchases in one game do not advance the other.
Who should start now, and who should wait?
Start now if these statements fit
- You want a hands-on action RPG rather than another game built around the same combat rhythm as HSR.
- New Eridu’s urban-fantasy setting and a new cast interest you independently of the crossover.
- Your device has enough free space for the published requirements and future updates.
- You can treat a second live-service game as optional entertainment instead of a mandatory checklist.
- You are interested in seeing how the announced Version 3.3 and collaboration develop, while accepting that details may change.
Wait or skip if these statements fit
- Turn-based play is the feature you most want to protect in your limited gaming time.
- Your phone, tablet or PC cannot comfortably spare the required storage.
- You are looking for shared characters, shared currencies or a single combined progression track.
- You would only play because you expect confirmed crossover rewards or merchandise that HoYoverse has not yet specified.
- Adding another event schedule would make both games less enjoyable.
What this recommendation does not claim
There is not enough current official evidence to rank ZZZ and HSR on writing quality, free-to-play generosity, banner value, retention, player population or routine time demands. The published device requirements and an announced release date are not measures of game quality or audience size. A conditional recommendation is more accurate than a universal verdict: ZZZ is worthwhile when its action format and setting solve a problem you actually have, and unnecessary when they do not.

For an existing Honkai: Star Rail player, Zenless Zone Zero is worth trying as a separate action RPG, especially if you want character switching, QTE-driven encounters and a different urban-fantasy setting. The October 21, 2026 Version 3.3 announcement and the live collaboration trailer give curious players a timely reason to look, but neither establishes shared progression or fully described crossover content. Check storage, platform support and your tolerance for another live-service routine first. If those constraints are unfavorable, staying with Star Rail—or waiting until the crossover details are clearer—is a sensible choice.
