Is Your TV Playing in 4K? How to Check the Signal and the Show

To check whether your TV is receiving a 4K-format signal, start playback and open the TV’s signal or input information screen, if your model has one. Look for 2160p or 3840 × 2160. Then check that the specific program is offered in 4K and that every device and connection in the signal path supports it. A source set to output 4K can still send a 4K-format signal for a show that was made or delivered at a lower resolution.

What does a 4K signal look like?

4K UHD refers to a resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels, compared with 1920 × 1080 for 1080p Full HD, according to Roku’s 4K setup guide. A TV’s live input-information screen may identify the incoming format as 2160p, 3840 × 2160, UHD, or 4K.

That screen is useful because it reports the format arriving at the TV input, when the TV exposes that information. It does not necessarily reveal the original resolution of the movie or episode: a streaming box, receiver, or TV can upscale lower-resolution video to a 4K output format.

How to check whether your TV is playing 4K

1. Check the TV’s live input information

Start the movie, show, game, or broadcast. Use the remote or TV menu to look for Info, Status, Signal Information, or input details. Menu names and remote shortcuts vary by model; there is no universal button sequence. Consult the manual for your exact TV if you cannot find a signal-information screen.

If the TV reports 2160p or 3840 × 2160, that is evidence it is receiving a 4K-format signal. If it reports 1080p or 720p, the TV is receiving a lower-resolution format at that input. The content’s own format still needs a separate check.

2. Check the source device’s output setting

If the TV does not show live resolution, inspect the connected streaming player, game console, disc player, or cable or satellite box. For example, Roku calls its output setting Display type; it can detect a supported resolution automatically or let you select one manually. See Roku’s instructions for changing the display type.

A 4K output setting confirms what the device is configured to send, not that an individual title is native 4K or that the service is currently delivering it in 4K.

3. Verify the specific title or channel

Look at the program’s details in the streaming service or channel guide for a 4K, UHD, or similar format label. Google recommends checking for labels such as “4K,” “HDR,” and “UHD” when finding supported programming, and notes that 4K content may require a qualifying subscription. Its requirements are for the Google device setup described in its 4K streaming guidance, not every service or device.

A 4K-capable TV does not convert every program into native 4K. The content, subscription where applicable, playback device, and connection all have to support the intended format.

Check the full HDMI path

For an external source, trace the signal from the device to the TV. If it passes through an AV receiver (AVR) or soundbar, those devices and the HDMI ports used on them are part of the path too. Check the manuals for the exact source, intermediate equipment, and TV rather than assuming every HDMI port supports the same features.

For the Roku setup in its 4K Ultra HD guide, Roku says the devices in the chain need HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 support; a link that does not meet those requirements can limit content to 720p or 1080p. Google also lists a compatible 4K TV and an HDCP 2.2 port among requirements for its specified setup. Requirements depend on the equipment and format, so one vendor’s checklist is not a universal rule.

Enable the TV’s enhanced HDMI format, if required

Some TVs require an enhanced-format setting on the specific HDMI input connected to the 4K device. Names and paths differ by manufacturer and model:

  • LG: The cited guidance uses General settings → HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color; enable it for the connected port. For the UHD broadcast scenario it covers, LG also says to check that the set-top box is set to 2160p at 60 fps. See LG’s UHD broadcasting guidance.
  • Sony: The referenced model-specific guide uses Settings → Watching TV → External inputs → HDMI signal format. It notes that enhanced format is available only on specified inputs. See Sony’s 4K picture settings guide.
  • Samsung: The cited path is Settings → General → External Device Manager → UHD HDMI Color (Input Signal Plus); select the port used by the device. See Samsung’s device-connection instructions.

These paths are examples from specific manufacturer guidance, not guaranteed menu labels for every model or software version. Google also notes that some TVs require an “enhanced mode” for HDR output; manufacturers may use other names for similar input settings. See Google’s display-settings guidance.

Is HDR proof that a show is in 4K?

No. HDR and resolution are separate attributes. An HDR label or indicator can relate to HDR capability or output status, depending on the device, but it does not establish that the picture is 4K. Check the resolution and the program’s format independently.

What each check can—and cannot—tell you

Check What it tells you What it does not prove
TV live input or signal status The format reaching the TV input, if the model reports it That the program originated in native 4K
Source device’s output setting The format the device is configured to send That the current title is available or being delivered in 4K
Program label and service plan Whether the title and, where applicable, subscription support 4K That every connection in the signal path can carry it
HDMI ports and intermediate devices Whether the route supports the required signal and protection format for the setup That the service is currently sending a 4K stream
HDR indicator HDR capability or output status, depending on the device 4K resolution

If streaming quality drops, check the connection

Internet speed recommendations vary by device and service. Google recommends at least 20 Mbps for its specified 4K streaming setup. Roku says up to 25 Mbps may be needed for the 4K setup covered by its guide. These are vendor-specific recommendations, not universal guarantees; actual requirements and performance can vary with the service, stream, device, and network conditions.

When an HDMI cable might be the problem

Consider the cable only if an HDMI-connected source is configured for 4K but the signal is unstable, drops, or does not reach the expected format. Check the cable and each connection in the chain, then compare them with the source maker’s requirements. Roku recommends a Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed HDMI cable if the included cable for a compatible Roku device cannot be used, and cautions that older or inadequately labeled cables may not support some 4K HDR formats at 60 fps. A Streaming Stick connected directly to a compatible TV does not need a separate HDMI cable under Roku’s guidance; see its display-type and cable instructions.

Replacing a cable can address a connection limitation, but it cannot make an HD source or lower-resolution program into native 4K.
