Is Your Roku Smart TV Displaying Banner Ads on Live TV? You’re Not the Only One

Yes, Roku TVs have been reported displaying a banner over live television, but the available evidence does not show that this is a current, widespread Roku feature. A historical report relayed by a user discussion described the behavior as a bug that Roku said had been resolved. That history does not prove that a banner you see today has the same cause.

First identify what “live TV” means in your setup and where the banner appears. It could be a Roku notification, a guide recommendation, an overlay from the channel or app, or an advertisement inserted by the source you are watching.

What the historical Roku banner reports actually establish

A Reddit discussion reproduced a link to historical reporting about Roku TVs placing a banner over live programming. The discussion relayed a Roku spokesperson’s description of the behavior as a bug that had been fixed, rather than a confirmed permanent advertising feature. The post is anecdotal and is not a current Roku status page or a list of affected models: Reddit discussion relaying the historical report.

There is no reliable published incidence statistic in the available evidence, and no current model-by-model list showing which Roku TVs display these banners. Do not assume that every Roku TV, or even every banner with similar wording, is part of that old incident.

“Live TV” can mean several different things

Roku’s Live TV area can combine over-the-air antenna channels with streaming channels. The source determines which company can place graphics on the picture.

What you are watching How it reaches the TV Where an overlay may originate
Over-the-air (OTA) broadcast An HDTV antenna connected to Ant/Cable In The broadcaster, the Roku TV interface, or a device-level notification
Live streaming channel A Roku channel or another streaming app using your internet connection The channel/app, its advertising system, or Roku interface elements
Cable or satellite box An external receiver connected by HDMI The provider, receiver, or an HDMI/device overlay rather than the Roku tuner

Roku’s setup instructions explain that OTA reception requires an HDTV antenna, connection to Ant/Cable In, and a channel scan; reception varies with location and antenna placement: Roku antenna and cable TV setup.

Identify the banner before trying to remove it

Write down the channel or input, the exact wording, its position, and whether it vanishes on its own. Those details separate four commonly confused elements:

  • Program or source overlay: A broadcaster, streaming channel, cable box, or app may place a promotion over its own video.
  • Roku notification: A brief system message may appear over video and then disappear.
  • Guide recommendation: The Live TV Channel Guide can show listings and “More Ways to Watch” suggestions. These are guide elements, not necessarily an ad drawn over the program.
  • Persistent banner: A fixed graphic that remains while the picture continues deserves a screenshot and a report to Roku or the source provider, especially if it appears across multiple inputs.

Check whether the same program looks different when viewed through another input or app. A banner that follows one channel but not another is more likely to be source-specific; one that appears across antenna, apps, and HDMI inputs points more strongly toward a TV-level feature or fault, although that observation alone is not proof.

Roku’s advertising controls: what they do and do not cover

Roku’s ad-preference settings are documented for non-video banner ads in Roku menus and screensavers. The settings include sensitive ad categories and options to hide particular ads. Roku does not promise that these preferences remove a banner shown while a live program is playing, nor do they eliminate advertising inside streaming channels.

Therefore, changing Settings > Privacy > Advertising may reduce certain menu or screensaver ads, but it is not a guaranteed fix for an overlay on live video. If the banner is supplied by a channel, broadcaster, cable box, or satellite receiver, Roku’s advertising preference cannot control it.

Try Smart TV Experience privacy and notification settings

The older official U.S. English Roku TV User Guide v11.5a documents controls under Settings > Privacy > Smart TV experience: Roku TV User Guide v11.5a. Current Roku OS versions may use different wording or placement.

Roku TV Remote Control (Official Manufacturer Product) | Simple Setup & Pre-Set App Shortcuts - Replacement Remote Compatible with RokuTV Models ONLY (Not Roku Players)
  • Compatible devices - Roku TV models ONLY
  • NOT compatible devices - Roku Streaming Players, Roku Audio, or other smart TVs
  • Made by Roku for Roku TV - Stream easy with an official Roku remote, designed to work seamlessly with your Roku TV.
  • No juggling remotes - Power up your Roku TV, adjust the volume, mute, and control your streaming with an official Roku remote.
  • Simple setup - Ready to control your Roku TV in just one step. Comes with pre-installed batteries.
  1. Open Settings on the Roku TV.
  2. Choose Privacy, then Smart TV experience.
  3. Clear Use info from TV inputs if you do not want to authorize Roku to collect or share viewing information from TV inputs for recommendations and more relevant ads.
  4. Clear Enable auto notifications to suppress brief Smart TV Experience notifications.
  5. Return to the same channel or input and observe whether the symptom changes.

The guide says these settings do not remove “More Ways to Watch” recommendations shown in the Live TV Channel Guide. Disabling notifications should therefore not be presented as a way to erase every guide recommendation or every live-viewing overlay.

Use the right fix for the source

If it appears only in an antenna channel

Confirm that you are watching the TV’s tuner rather than a streaming version of the channel. Rescan channels if the guide or picture behaves abnormally, and note whether the banner appears on one station or every station. An antenna receives free OTA broadcasts; it is not an ad-removal device.

If it appears only in a streaming app

Look for the app’s own ad or notification controls, sign out and back in, and test another live channel. Report a video overlay that persists or blocks content to that channel’s support team as well as Roku if it appears to be system-generated.

If it appears on an HDMI cable or satellite box

Use the receiver’s menus and support process. Temporarily switch to a Roku home screen or another input: if the graphic disappears immediately, the external provider or receiver is the more likely source.

If it appears everywhere

Record the exact text, time, input, channel, Roku TV model, and Roku OS version. Photograph or record the screen without exposing personal information. Restart the TV, check for system updates, and contact Roku support with those observations. The evidence does not identify a current affected-model list, so a model-specific assumption is not a substitute for diagnosis.

How to check the Live TV guide separately

Roku’s support pages describe Live TV listings and “More Ways to Watch” as guide functions: Live TV Channel Guide and More Ways to Watch. Open the guide and see whether the message is confined to the guide interface. If it appears only while browsing listings, it is not evidence that Roku is inserting a banner over the program itself.

What cannot be concluded from one banner

  • One occurrence does not establish a current, widespread Roku advertising policy.
  • The historical report does not establish that a present-day banner is the same bug.
  • Turning off Smart TV Experience options does not remove guide-level “More Ways to Watch” recommendations.
  • Roku’s ad preferences do not guarantee removal of ads inside apps or overlays supplied by a broadcaster, cable provider, or streaming service.
