Check the plugs, simplify the connection path, and test with a known-working cable rated for your source and display before replacing anything.
How do I know if my HDMI cable is bad?
The clearest practical test is controlled substitution: keep the source, display, content, resolution, and settings the same, then replace only the cable with one already known to work at the required format. If the symptom disappears, the original cable or its connection is implicated. It is not proof that cables generally fail at a particular rate or age; published failure-rate and lifespan figures are not established by the cited guidance.

- Check both plugs for looseness or visible damage, then unplug and firmly reseat them.
- Temporarily remove adapters, couplers, switches, and extensions to reduce the number of links in the signal path.
- Change one item at a time while keeping the source, display, content, resolution, and settings constant.
- Substitute a known-working cable that supports the signal format and bandwidth in use.
- If the problem remains, test another input or display and consider device settings or content-protection behavior.
Extron Electronics’ HDMI 201 User Guide warns that HDMI signals are susceptible to poor connections, too many adapters, and cables that are too long, which can result in image loss or jitter. These are possible causes, not a diagnosis from symptoms alone.
Why does my TV screen keep going black?
A loose or damaged cable is one possibility, but a flashing black or blue screen, snow, or distortion can also point to an HDCP issue. Extron describes these as symptoms of undecrypted video in its HDMI 201 User Guide. Source-device behavior, a display input, or a connection elsewhere in the chain can also be involved.

To narrow it down, simplify the path between source and display, try another input where available, and compare with another source or display. If the issue appears only with particular content, that observation can help distinguish content-protection behavior from a cable problem; it does not, by itself, identify the cause.
Can an HDMI cable cause flickering or dropouts?
Yes. A faulty connection, an unsuitable cable, too many adapters, or a long run can contribute to flicker, jitter, or intermittent image loss. But these symptoms overlap with device, input, and HDCP problems. Test one link at a time rather than treating flicker as proof that the cable has gone bad.

What HDMI cable do I need for my signal?
Choose by the bandwidth and format your devices will use, not by the assumption that the newest or highest-class cable automatically improves a working setup. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s cable guidance describes these classes and capabilities:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Cable class | Published capability | Examples described in the guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Premium High Speed | Up to 18Gbps | 4K at 60Hz, HDR, and BT.2020 |
| Ultra High Speed | Up to 48Gbps | 4K at 120Hz and 8K at 60Hz |
| Ultra96 | Up to 96Gbps | HDMI 2.2 applications |
These figures describe cable capabilities, not how often cables fail. Match the class to the formats your devices and intended setup require. If a cable works reliably at one resolution or refresh rate but not a higher-bandwidth format, it may be inadequate for the latter without being physically broken.

How can I check a cable’s certification?
HDMI Licensing Administrator says official cable names appear on cable jackets and corresponding package identifiers; see its cable guide. Its 2026 Premium certification material says every length of every model line is tested at an authorized test center, each cable uses a unique QR code for verification, and in-market cables undergo continuing audit tests. The Premium High Speed certification described there covers 4K at 60Hz and 18Gbps use.
Certification can help establish that a cable meets its specified performance class; it cannot show whether your existing cable has failed. Verify a replacement’s label and QR code when relevant, then make sure its class suits your devices and signal.

When should I replace the cable?
Replace it when inspection reveals damage, or when a controlled test with an appropriately rated, known-working cable resolves the problem. If the symptom persists after substitution, look beyond the cable before spending money. For persistent issues on a long run or a complex signal path, an AV installer may be more useful than a household cable tester, which is a specialist tool rather than a necessary first purchase.
