World of Warcraft (WoW) is free to try through level 20, not free to play without limits. Blizzard’s current starter information says the free trial includes all playable content through level 20, including level-20 dungeons and quests. To continue past level 20, you need either a recurring subscription or non-recurring game time. The current expansion, Midnight, is a separate purchase and still requires active subscription or game time.
There is no single worldwide WoW price: subscription and expansion costs vary by region, currency, taxes and the edition currently sold. Use your regional Battle.net shop for the amount you would actually pay.

What “free to play” means in WoW
WoW’s free option is an account-based trial with a level-20 ceiling. It is not advertised as a seven-day or 30-day trial that expires on a calendar date. You can play the trial content until your character reaches level 20, subject to Blizzard’s account and service rules.

What you must pay for after level 20
Once you want to progress beyond level 20, the free trial is no longer sufficient. Blizzard lists two ways to obtain the required access: a recurring WoW subscription or non-recurring game time. Both are paid access options; the difference is how payment repeats.
| Option | Payment pattern | Access supplied | Midnight included? | Price guidance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free trial | No recurring payment | Playable content through level 20, including level-20 dungeons and quests | No access beyond the trial’s level limit | Free |
| WoW subscription | Recurring billing at the interval selected in your region | WoW and WoW Classic access, including older expansion content covered by the service | No; Midnight is separate | Varies by region; check the local Battle.net shop |
| Non-recurring game time | One-time purchase for a defined period | Paid WoW access while the purchased time remains active | No; Midnight is separate | Varies by region and offer |
| Midnight expansion | Separate one-time expansion purchase, edition-dependent | Unlocks the current expansion when an active subscription or game time is also present | Yes, for the purchased edition’s stated contents | Varies by region, edition and promotion |
The key distinction is that buying game time or subscribing gives you the base service, while buying Midnight adds the current expansion. Buying the expansion alone does not replace the subscription or game-time requirement.

Does a subscription include every WoW expansion?
Blizzard’s official Worldsoul Saga overview says one subscription provides access to WoW and its past expansion content, while Midnight must be purchased separately. In other words, a subscription is generally the entry ticket to the established game and older content; it is not an automatic license for the newest expansion.
The latest expansion named in Blizzard’s current overview is World of Warcraft: Midnight. Its expansion purchase requires an active subscription or non-recurring game time in addition to the expansion license. Check the exact edition description before paying, because bonuses, included items and promotional bundles can change.
An older Blizzard pre-purchase announcement stated that a Midnight purchase included The War Within and did not include future expansions. That announcement is historical rather than a substitute for the current store listing. Read the live edition page for the region and platform on which you intend to play: Blizzard’s pre-purchase announcement explains the earlier package context, while the current Worldsoul Saga overview describes the present expansion relationship.

How much does a WoW subscription cost?
There is no reliable universal price to quote. Blizzard’s trial FAQ directs players to their regional Battle.net Shop because the amount depends on location and currency. Taxes, billing interval, local pricing and available payment options can also affect the checkout total.
Find the price for your account
- Open the official WoW trial or account page: Getting Started with Your Free Trial.
- Sign in to the Battle.net account you will use for WoW, or follow Blizzard’s account-creation instructions.
- Set or confirm the country and currency associated with that account.
- Open the WoW subscription or game-time offer in the regional Battle.net Shop.
- Compare the displayed recurring and non-recurring options, including the billing interval and any tax shown at checkout.
- Before confirming, verify that you are buying access for the correct Battle.net account and region.
This approach is more accurate than copying a price table from another country or from an older expansion cycle. If you move countries, use a different account region or see a different currency, the amount may not match a friend’s price.
Subscription versus non-recurring game time
When a subscription is practical
A subscription suits players who expect to play continuously. It renews automatically according to the plan selected in the regional shop, so you do not have to purchase access manually each time. Check the cancellation and renewal terms in your Battle.net account if you want to prevent the next charge; access normally remains governed by the time already purchased.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
When game time is practical
Non-recurring game time is useful if you play seasonally, want a fixed spending commitment or do not want automatic renewal. It grants paid access for the period specified by the offer. When that time ends, you must buy more game time or start a subscription to continue beyond the level-20 trial limit.
Neither choice, by itself, unlocks Midnight. If you want to play the current expansion, budget for both the active access time and the separate expansion license.

What is the WoW Token, and is it the subscription price?
The WoW Token is a separate in-game exchange system, not a different name for the monthly subscription. Blizzard’s Token listing allows the item to be exchanged for game time or Battle.net Balance under the terms shown for the relevant region. The United States listing currently displays US$20.00 for a token; that figure is the listed token price, not a universal monthly subscription price.

Because Token rules, exchange values and availability can differ by region and can change, read the live listing before relying on it. The US product page is Battle.net’s WoW Token listing. Do not use the token’s dollar amount to estimate what a subscription costs in another country.
How the total cost changes by the way you play
Trying WoW before committing
Your initial cost can be zero if you remain within the free trial’s level-20 scope. This is the lowest-risk route for checking whether you enjoy the classes, combat, questing and dungeon experience. You will need paid access once you decide to progress beyond level 20.
Playing older content without the current expansion
A subscription or non-recurring game time supplies paid WoW access and access to older expansion content covered by the service. You can therefore play the established game without immediately purchasing Midnight. This is often the simplest arrangement for returning players who want to catch up or explore prior zones.
Recommended Free Tools
Playing the current expansion
For Midnight, plan on two separate components: active subscription or game time, plus the expansion purchase. The expansion edition determines what digital extras or other contents are included, and those details may change during sales or new editions. Use the current regional store page rather than an archived announcement to calculate your checkout total.
Common cost and access mistakes
- Assuming “free trial” means unlimited free WoW: the documented free content stops at level 20.
- Confusing a calendar trial with a level trial: Blizzard’s current wording describes a level-20 limit, not a fixed number of free days.
- Buying Midnight alone: the expansion still requires active subscription or non-recurring game time.
- Using a friend’s price as your own: regional currency and pricing differ; check your Battle.net shop.
- Treating the US$20 Token listing as the monthly fee: a Token is an in-game exchange product with its own rules.
- Relying on an old edition comparison: expansion bundles and bonuses are volatile, so read the current edition details before checkout.
- Subscribing on the wrong account: confirm the Battle.net account, region and character access before completing payment.
A simple decision checklist
- If you have never played, start with the free trial and see whether level-20 content answers your interest.
- If you want to continue but not the newest expansion, choose either recurring subscription or non-recurring game time based on whether you want automatic renewal.
- If you want Midnight, add its current regional edition price to the cost of active game access.
- Check the final Battle.net checkout screen for currency, taxes, billing interval and edition contents.
- Keep the Token option separate from your subscription calculation unless you specifically intend to use that in-game exchange.
Bottom line
WoW is free to try through level 20, including level-20 quests and dungeons. Beyond that point, you need a subscription or non-recurring game time. The current expansion, Midnight, is an additional purchase and does not remove the need for active game access. Since Blizzard prices these products by region and can change editions or promotions, the only dependable price is the one shown in your regional Battle.net Shop at checkout.
