If an external SSD is not being optimized, its USB enclosure or another part of the connection may be preventing those requests from reaching the drive. An Optimize Drives status or an old “Last run” date alone cannot identify the cause.
What Windows means by optimizing an SSD
Windows’ Optimize Drives feature handles different drive types differently. For a supported SSD, optimization is TRIM: Windows tells the drive which data blocks are no longer in use so the SSD can prepare them for later writes. That is different from traditional hard-disk defragmentation.

Microsoft’s Optimize Drives guidance describes SSDs as being “trimmed” and says the default automatic schedule is once a week. Its command documentation adds that traditional optimization processes—including traditional defragmentation and retrim—run monthly for SSDs; changing the scheduled task frequency does not change that SSD cadence. These describe different levels of the feature: the weekly user-facing schedule and the monthly cadence for those SSD operations.

-
Select the external SSD’s volume and inspect its media type and status. Windows may identify an eligible SSD as an SSD and report it as trimmed.
-
For a command-line check, open PowerShell with appropriate permissions and substitute the external volume’s actual drive letter for
H:Optimize-Volume -DriveLetter H -Analyze -Verbose. Microsoft documents this command as a way to report the volume’s current optimization state. -
To ask Windows to send retrim requests, use
Optimize-Volume -DriveLetter H -ReTrim -Verbose, again replacingHwith the correct letter. Check the output for the operation Windows performed; do not force traditional defragmentation on an SSD.Recommended Free Tools

PowerShell’s default operation depends on what Windows detects. Microsoft documents Retrim as the default for SSDs that support TRIM. It documents no operation for an SSD without TRIM support, a Removable FAT volume, or unknown media; HDDs, fixed VHDs, and Storage Spaces instead use Analyze and Defrag by default. A command that completes without an error therefore does not, by itself, prove that TRIM reached the SSD.
Why an external SSD may not receive TRIM
For USB storage, TRIM depends on a chain: the SSD, the enclosure’s bridge controller, the USB host controller, the protocol, and the file system must work together. The enclosure is more than a shell; its controller participates in passing storage commands between the PC and the drive.
Plugable’s guidance, updated April 6, 2026, says Windows 10 and 11 enable TRIM for USB-connected SSDs when the host controller, device, and file system are supported. Its stated conditions include a USB device supporting UASP and a volume formatted as NTFS or ReFS. It also warns that some early USB 3 host controllers may not support UASP or TRIM correctly. Those conditions explain why compatibility can fail; they are not a guarantee that every UASP enclosure will pass TRIM end to end.

Without the exact SSD, enclosure, file system, and PC controller details, the failing part cannot be identified. The enclosure may be the obstacle, but the same symptom can come from another link in the connection.
What to check before replacing an enclosure
-
Look up the exact enclosure’s specifications for UASP and TRIM or UNMAP support for the relevant SATA or NVMe drive type.
-
Check that support applies to your Windows host, USB controller, and file system—not just to the enclosure in isolation.

Confirm the volume’s file system in Windows. Plugable’s stated USB TRIM conditions specify NTFS or ReFS.
-
Do not treat a UASP label alone as proof of end-to-end TRIM. Verify the complete host-and-device combination where the manufacturer provides that information.

- 【Supported SSD】FIDECO NVMe enclosure can support M.2 NVMe SSD with M & M+B Key. The supported M.2 SSD sizes are 2230/2242/2260/2280. Just one M.2 enclosure can meet your needs of using different sizes of NVMe SSDs. Please not that it cannot support any M.2 SATA SSD.
- 【Super Fast Transfer Speed】FIDECO NVMe SSD enclosure adopts USB 3.2 Gen 2 standard and can support UASP, so the maximum speed can reach 10Gbps in theory. You do not need to wait for the data transfer any longer, and it can definitely save much time for you.
- 【Sandwich Design】FIDECO M.2 enclosure features sandwich-style design, which makes it easy for you to install different SSDs with no tools at all. Also, the sandwich design can make the thermal pad have a better contact with the M.2 NVMe enclosure, so the SSD itself can run in a much cooler operating environment.
- 【Portable Size】FIDECO M.2 NVMe to USB adapter features mini and pocket design, and it is equipped with a USB C to USB C cable with an attached USB A adapter. So, you can bring only one USB cable during travel.
- 【Compatible System】FIDECO M.2 to USB adapter is widely compatible with Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. Therefore, whether you are Windows or Apple users, the NVMe SSD reader can make it.
Why “Last run” may not settle the question
A stale “Last run” date is not proof that the enclosure blocked TRIM. Microsoft’s defrag documentation says scheduled optimization might not run if Windows cannot wake the computer, if the computer is on battery, or if it resumes from idle. When analysis is skipped, Optimize Drives may not update “Last run,” so the date can be up to a month old.
Use the Analyze and ReTrim commands to check the volume’s current reported state rather than diagnosing the connection from the displayed date alone.
Removal policy is separate from TRIM
Changing an external drive’s removal policy does not enable TRIM. Microsoft’s removal-policy guidance says Quick removal has been the default since Windows 10 version 1809. Quick removal avoids write caching. Better performance can cache writes, so you must use Safely Remove Hardware before disconnecting the drive. This setting concerns write caching and safe disconnection, not whether the USB path supports TRIM.
