Yes—web development can still be worth learning, but it is a skill investment, not a guaranteed route to a job. For beginners, the strongest reason to start is that understanding how websites work helps you build, test, and maintain useful things—even when AI can draft some of the code. In the United States, employment projections remain positive, though the Bureau of Labor Statistics explicitly warns that AI and improved tools may soften growth.

What the job outlook says—and what it does not

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects 5% employment growth for web developers and digital designers from 2025 to 2035, compared with 3% for all occupations. It estimates an average of 13,600 openings per year across that combined occupation. These are U.S. projections, not a forecast for every region or an estimate of new entry-level jobs: openings also include positions created when workers leave an occupation.

The BLS also says improving web development tools and increased use of AI may soften employment growth by raising productivity and enabling workers in other occupations to take on some basic tasks. That is a reason to avoid assuming demand will keep rising unchanged—not evidence that web development is disappearing. The projections do not establish what hiring will look like in a particular city, country, or entry-level market. BLS: Web Developers and Digital Designers

Salary figures need context

The BLS reports a median annual wage of $92,650 for U.S. web developers in May 2025. That figure covers workers across experience levels and locations; it is not a beginner salary estimate or a promise of what a new learner will earn. Local pay and hiring expectations can differ substantially.

What AI changes for a beginner

AI tools can explain concepts, suggest code, and help investigate errors. But generated code is a draft to inspect and test, not a dependable substitute for knowing what the code does. In Stack Overflow’s 2025 Developer Survey, 46% of respondents said they distrust AI-tool accuracy, while 33% said they trust it. The most commonly reported frustration, cited by 66%, was solutions that were almost right but still not quite correct.

Those results describe the survey’s respondents and their reported experiences. They do not measure AI’s effect on employment or prove which learning method works best. They do underline a practical point for a learner: if you cannot spot a broken assumption, test a change, or explain the output, an AI-generated answer can leave you stuck. What to learn first

Start with the browser fundamentals rather than relying on a framework or generated code to conceal them. MDN’s beginner learning path introduces the core technologies and practical skills involved in creating websites. MDN: Your first website

  1. HTML: Use it to structure content, headings, links, and forms so a page has meaningful organization.
  2. CSS: Learn how to style that content and control layout, including how pages adapt to different screen sizes.
  3. JavaScript: Add interaction and learn how a browser responds to code and user actions.
  4. Practice and quality: Build complete small sites, then work on accessibility, debugging, and testing. Revise your projects rather than stopping when they first appear to work.

MDN provides tutorials and exercises covering these foundations and related skills. A useful check as you learn is whether you can describe your code, change it deliberately, and see whether it behaves as expected at different screen widths.

How to use AI without skipping the learning

Use AI to accelerate investigation, not to make decisions you cannot evaluate. For example, ask it to explain an error message or compare two possible approaches. Then verify the answer by running the code, checking the relevant behavior, and considering edge cases. If the result fails, trace what happened and revise it yourself.

  • Ask for an explanation of a concept or error, not only a replacement code block.
  • Run suggested code and check the result in the browser.
  • Test more than the happy path, including different screen sizes and unusual inputs where relevant.
  • Keep only code you can explain and maintain; revise it when you understand a better approach.

Which kind of web development might suit you?

Web development includes different kinds of work. The BLS describes developers who specialize in front-end or back-end work, as well as those who handle some or all parts of a site. These are distinctions in the work, not a ranking of which path is easier to enter or has better prospects.

Do you need a degree or certificate?

Not every web development role has the same education requirement. The BLS says requirements range from a high school diploma to a bachelor’s degree, depending on the position. It also notes that some candidates can demonstrate ability through prior work experience or projects. HTML is a core competency; some employers also seek JavaScript or SQL.

That flexibility does not mean credentials never matter: check job listings in the region and role you are targeting. A certificate or course can structure learning, but the sources do not establish that a particular credential guarantees employment. A finished project you can explain and maintain can help demonstrate practical ability where an employer accepts that evidence. BLS education and skills information

A sensible way to decide whether to start

Try a small, complete website before making a large commitment of money or time. Build a page with structured content, style it for more than one screen size, and add a modest interaction. Then revisit it: fix a defect, check accessibility, and explain the choices in your code. That gives you a direct sense of whether you enjoy the work and whether you are willing to keep learning as tools change.

If your aim is a technical career, use local job listings to see which skills and credentials are actually requested, and treat national projections as context rather than a personal forecast. If your aim is to build your own products or understand the web, those practical benefits can make the learning worthwhile even if you do not pursue a web developer job. No fixed timeline to employability is established by the available sources.
