On US sales figures, vinyl looks less like a fad than a sustained growth trend. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) reports that vinyl grew for a nineteenth consecutive year in 2025, and its mid-year update shows further growth in the first half of 2026. Those numbers describe what sold and how much it was worth. They cannot show why people buy records or how long the growth will last.
What a fad would look like in the numbers
A fad is a short burst of interest that peaks and then fades. If vinyl were one, sales would rise for a season or two and then fall back toward earlier levels. A run of consecutive annual gains is the opposite pattern. The sales record can test that part of the question. It cannot test whether buyers are enthusiastic, nostalgic, or simply curious, so the answer stays limited to the sales trajectory.

2025: units and wholesale value both rose
RIAA’s 2025 Year-End Recorded Music Revenue Report, published in March 2026, covers US vinyl album sales for 2024 and 2025 on the same wholesale basis.

Units and dollar value are separate indicators, and they do not have to move at the same rate. In 2025 both rose, with value growing slightly faster than units according to RIAA’s percentages.

The nineteenth consecutive year
RIAA’s year-end reporting states that vinyl grew for a nineteenth consecutive year in 2025. The trend is not new in the most recent report. RIAA’s 2024 Year-End Revenue Report, published in March 2025, carries analysis by Matt Bass, identified in that report as RIAA Vice President, Research | Gold & Platinum Operations. It describes the period this way: “The continued overall growth was amplified as vinyl continued a nearly 20-year surge.” That is the analyst’s characterization in the 2024 report, not a separate measurement.
The first half of 2026
RIAA’s mid-year announcement, dated September 1, 2026, reports US vinyl growth of 17.7% in the first half of 2026 compared with the first half of 2025. This is a six-month, year-over-year rate. It is not a full-year figure, so it should not be read alongside the 2025 annual percentages as if they described the same period. The announcement defines vinyl as full-length vinyl albums, including direct and special-market sales.

Why the dollar figures cannot be joined
The most common mistake is to place RIAA’s 2024 dollar total next to its 2025 total. The two reports use different value bases. The 2024 report presents estimated retail value, while the 2025 report uses wholesale data. The table below shows the figures as each report states them.

Comparing $1,442.9 million with $1,042.9 million would suggest a sharp decline that the data does not show. Use the 2024-to-2025 comparison within the 2025 report, which is like-for-like. The gap between the two annual totals should not be read as a change in consumer spending.

What the sales data cannot tell you
- Why people buy records. The figures measure shipments and value. They do not quantify consumer motivation. RIAA’s 2025 materials describe vinyl as a listening experience and collectible art, but that is a characterization, not a quantified consumer study.
- Listening versus collecting. The share of purchases made for playback compared with display or collecting is not measured in these figures.
- Specific artists or special editions. The figures do not isolate how much any artist, release, or limited edition contributed to growth.
- Future demand. A consecutive-year record describes the past. It does not establish how long growth will continue.
- Other countries. These figures cover the United States only. They do not show that other national markets followed the same path.

RIAA is an industry trade association that reports recorded-music market statistics. Its figures are not an independent consumer survey, and they should be attributed to RIAA with their geography, period, and value basis stated.
