Short answer: VaultBreakers has a free Steam demo, but the complete game is currently planned as a paid premium release. What you can play for free right now
The free download is a limited preview of VaultBreakers rather than the complete product. Steam’s demo listing makes it available to everyone and provides a self-contained introduction to the game’s systems, map, quests and cooperative play.

Included characters and area
You can choose between two playable Vaultbreakers. The demo covers part of the first map, Wolfswood, rather than the entire world described for the finished game. It also includes an upgradable haven and perks, allowing you to experience the game’s progression and preparation loop.
Quests and first Vaultbreak
The available onboarding and main quests run through the first Vaultbreak. That gives new players an initial narrative and objective path, but it should not be read as a promise that all campaign content is present in the demo.

Co-op limits
Co-op supports you and up to two friends, for a maximum party of three players. The demo listing does not establish a larger party size, local multiplayer option or cross-platform play.
Only PvE is available in the demo
The demo is limited to player-versus-environment play. You fight the game’s threats and complete objectives without the player-versus-player encounters described for the broader product. If competitive or mixed-player action is the reason you are interested, the demo cannot represent that part of the planned experience.
How the demo differs from the planned full game
The main VaultBreakers store description presents a wider game built around PvE and PvPvE adventures. PvPvE generally means that players contend with both computer-controlled dangers and other human players in the same activity. That broader description is not evidence that PvPvE is playable in the current demo; the demo listing explicitly limits its modes to PvE.

The table separates what is playable from what is advertised for the larger release. It does not imply that every feature in the store description will be present on day one or that the demo is a guaranteed purchase trial.

Is the full game free to play?
According to BetaDwarf’s official FAQ, VaultBreakers is “currently planned to be premium at launch.” The same answer says that nothing is completely settled and the plan can change before release. In practical terms, the developer’s present intention is a one-time paid game, not a confirmed free-to-play launch.
Do not treat the “Free To Play” genre tag visible on Steam as a final pricing announcement. The tag conflicts with the developer’s more specific FAQ response, and Steam also shows that the game is not currently available. For a pricing question, the FAQ is the clearer statement: premium is the current plan, subject to change.
What has not been announced
- No launch price is published in the reviewed official sources.
- No subscription, battle-pass, paid expansion or other monetization schedule is confirmed.
- There is no basis for assuming that downloading the demo gives you the full game permanently.
- There is no announced requirement to purchase a particular edition in order to keep any eligible reward.
Any article or post that gives a definitive price or guarantees a free-to-play conversion is going beyond the information currently available.

Most demo progress should be treated as temporary. The demo listing says that Legacy Points can unlock permanent rewards available after launch, while other demo progress will not carry over and may be reset before the full game releases.

What Legacy Points mean for planning
Legacy Points are the stated exception. If you earn them in the demo, they may qualify you for permanent rewards after launch. The wording does not establish the exact rewards, their quantity, when they will be delivered, or whether every point earned will convert under all future versions of the game.
What you should not assume
- Character levels, equipment, currencies, quest completion and haven upgrades are not confirmed to persist.
- A future reset can occur before launch even if your current save remains intact during the demo period.
- Co-op progress earned by one player is not automatically described as transferable to another player.
Play the demo to learn the systems and decide whether you enjoy the game, not to build a launch-ready inventory. Keep any Legacy Point documentation or in-game account information available if the developer later publishes redemption instructions.
When is VaultBreakers coming out?
BetaDwarf’s FAQ gives 2027 as the current release target. Steam does not provide a day or month; its release field says “To be announced.” Those statements are compatible: a target year is not a scheduled launch date.

Platforms
The developer says it is focusing on PC and consoles. That confirms the broad platform direction but does not name which console families, generations or storefronts will receive the game. Steam is the confirmed place to obtain the current demo.
What is the October 2026 Alpha test?
The Steam store separately advertises a time-limited Alpha test scheduled for October 15–22, 2026. An Alpha is not the same product as the public demo: it may expose different builds, features or test conditions, and access can be restricted or changed by the developer.
Because that window is date-sensitive, check the official Steam listing before relying on those dates. If you read this after the stated period, the test may have ended or been rescheduled. Nothing about the Alpha changes the basic distinction between a free demo and the unreleased full game.
How to start the free demo
- Open the official VaultBreakers page in Steam.
- Choose the demo option and add it to your Steam library.
- Install the demo through the Steam client using the library entry.
- Launch it alone or invite up to two friends for the supported co-op experience.
- Begin with the onboarding quests, then follow the main objectives through the first Vaultbreak.
- Use the haven, upgrades and perks to learn the progression loop, while remembering that ordinary progress may be reset.
The exact button wording can vary slightly between Steam’s desktop, web and mobile interfaces. If a demo button is not visible, confirm that you are viewing the current game listing rather than an old event page, and check whether the developer has temporarily withdrawn or replaced the build.
What the demo can and cannot tell you
Useful things to evaluate
- Whether the two available Vaultbreakers suit your preferred play style.
- How Wolfswood’s combat, exploration and objectives feel.
- Whether the haven and perk systems provide enough strategic choice for you.
- How smoothly a three-player co-op session works with your friends.
- Whether the onboarding communicates the game’s basic loop without outside guides.
Questions the demo leaves open
- How much content the complete map set and campaign will contain.
- How PvPvE encounters will work and how they will be balanced.
- Which console platforms will launch alongside PC.
- What the final system requirements and performance targets will be.
- How much the premium game will cost and whether the monetization plan will change.
A positive demo experience is evidence that you like this slice of the game, not a guarantee about the unreleased portions.
How to follow the project without paying
Wishlisting VaultBreakers on Steam is the developer’s preferred way for players to support the project. A wishlist can also help you notice announcements about release timing, platform support, price and changes to the demo. It does not reserve a copy, lock in a future price or guarantee access to every test.
For the most reliable updates, compare the current Steam listing with BetaDwarf’s official FAQ and announcements. Release dates, Alpha windows, platform lists and carryover rules are all details that can change during development.

Download the Steam demo if you want a no-cost introduction to VaultBreakers, its first map area, haven progression and three-player PvE co-op. Treat it as a limited test, not as the complete game and not as proof that the finished release will be free.
The full game is unreleased and has no announced price or exact date. BetaDwarf currently plans a premium launch, while keeping the option to change that decision.
