Short answer: Vaultbreakers has a free Steam demo, but BetaDwarf currently plans to sell the full game as a premium release. The full game is not available yet, and the only demo progress promised to survive launch is Legacy Points.
What “free to play” means for Vaultbreakers
There are two different products to distinguish: the downloadable Steam demo and the unreleased full game. The demo is free to download and provides a limited portion of the game. BetaDwarf’s official FAQ says the full release is “currently planned to be premium at launch,” while also warning that the business model can change before release.

No. A free demo is an introductory download with a restricted set of missions and systems. It does not establish that the complete game will use a free-to-play model, include a free permanent tier or sell optional items instead of requiring a purchase. BetaDwarf’s wording is a plan rather than a final contract, so the premium decision could still change, but the current stated plan is paid access at launch.

There is also no announced full-game price, pre-order offer or regional pricing table to compare. Treat any third-party price claim as unconfirmed until BetaDwarf or the official Steam listing posts launch terms.
What you get in the free Steam demo
The demo is designed as an introduction rather than a complete free-to-play version. The Steam demo listing and BetaDwarf’s announcement describe the following playable content.
Two playable Vaultbreakers
You can choose between two Vaultbreakers in the demo. The available character roster is therefore only a sample of the planned game, and the current materials do not establish how many characters will be in the launch version.

The demo opens part of the Wolfswood map. It is not the entire game world, and the official descriptions do not define the final number of maps or the size of the launch environment.
Onboarding and early quests
New players can complete the onboarding sequence and main quests through the first Vaultbreak. That gives the demo a beginning-to-early-milestone structure, but it should not be read as access to the full campaign or every mission type.
An upgradable Haven and perks
The demo includes a Haven that can be upgraded, along with perks to unlock and use. These systems let you sample the game’s progression loop even though most long-term content remains outside the demo.
Co-op for you and up to two friends
Co-op supports a group of up to three people: you plus as many as two friends. The current demo is described as PvE only, so the encounters are against the game’s enemies rather than other player teams.

How demo progression carries over
The carryover rule is narrow. Legacy Points are the exception to the reset policy: official descriptions say they will unlock rewards intended to remain permanent after launch.
Everything else should be treated as temporary. The Steam demo listing states that progress other than Legacy Points will not carry over to the game’s release and that demo progress might be reset before the full launch. That means you should not assume that a character level, item, Haven upgrade, perk unlock, quest state or other ordinary run progress will transfer.
What Legacy Points are for
Legacy Points are a long-term reward currency or score referenced by the official demo materials. The sources establish their intended permanence, but they do not provide a complete reward catalog, exchange rate or final interface. Keep earning them if you enjoy the demo, but do not infer that every achievement or inventory item is protected by the same rule.
Why a reset can still happen
The demo is a pre-release build. BetaDwarf can change systems, rebalance content or wipe temporary data before launch. The explicit wording about a possible reset applies even before the separate full-game release reset, so a Haven level or quest state could disappear during the demo period itself.
What should you avoid grinding?
Do not spend time on ordinary levels, equipment, perk combinations or quest completion solely because you expect a launch-day advantage. Those activities are useful for learning the systems and helping test the build, but they are not described as permanent rewards. The safest assumption is that only Legacy Points have a stated post-launch benefit.
Best way to approach the demo
- Play it to learn the combat, characters, map flow and co-op loop.
- Collect Legacy Points if you want the rewards that are described as permanent.
- Do not grind ordinary levels, items or quest completion solely to preserve them for launch.
- Expect balance, content and progression changes while the game is in development.
Is the demo early access?
The free download should not be confused with ownership of the full game or guaranteed early access. It is a limited demo build, and the full game remains unavailable on Steam. The separate Alpha Test is another testing opportunity, not evidence that the complete premium release has launched. Access, dates and features can differ between the demo and that test.
Is Vaultbreakers PvE or PvPvE?
The downloadable demo is currently PvE only. Its listed co-op activities place your group against enemies, not against rival player squads.

PvPvE is being tested separately in an Alpha Test. The main Steam listing discusses shared progression concepts across PvE and PvPvE, but that does not turn the current demo into a PvPvE build or guarantee that every planned mode will ship unchanged. If you specifically want to test player-versus-player encounters mixed with environmental threats, look for the separately announced Alpha Test rather than assuming the demo contains them.

Full-game timing
BetaDwarf is aiming for a 2027 release and says it is focusing on PC and consoles. That is a target year, not a confirmed launch date. Steam currently gives no day or month and labels the release “To be announced.” The available announcements do not name specific console systems, so a particular platform should not be treated as confirmed.
Conflicting Alpha Test end dates
Official pages currently disagree about when the Alpha Test ends. BetaDwarf’s October 8 announcement gives a window from October 15 at 10:00 CEST through October 21 at 23:59 CEST. The main Steam listing describes the test as running from October 15 through October 22.
Because those dates are time-sensitive and inconsistent, check the current Steam listing and BetaDwarf announcement immediately before trying to join. As of October 17, 2026, the stated test window is still in progress, but neither page should be used to promise a single final end time without checking for an update.
How to try the demo
- Open Steam and search for the Vaultbreakers demo listing.
- Confirm that you are selecting the demo rather than a future full-game page.
- Use Steam’s install or download control for the demo and allow it to finish.
- Launch the demo from your Steam library. The available character, map, Haven and quest content will be limited to the current build.
- If you play co-op, invite up to two friends through Steam’s normal multiplayer tools.
The exact wording of Steam’s buttons can change by client version or region. The important distinction is that the free download is the demo; it is not evidence that the unreleased premium game will be free.
Content creator access
BetaDwarf’s official FAQ includes a Vaultbreakers content creator program and a route to request access. The FAQ does not state that the program pays commissions, supplies tracked affiliate links or has fixed eligibility requirements. Do not assume that requesting access is the same as joining a paid affiliate scheme; use the official request route for the current terms.

Those omissions are normal for a game still in development, but they matter when deciding whether to wait, download the demo now or plan a purchase later. The official materials also do not identify a required computer-maintenance service, streaming subscription or other add-on needed to play the demo.

The demo makes sense if you want to evaluate the combat and co-op loop before the premium launch, or if you want to help test an early build while accepting that ordinary progress can be wiped. It is also a useful way to see whether the two available Vaultbreakers, the Wolfswood section and the Haven system suit your group.
It is a poor fit if you expect a complete campaign, a permanent free-to-play game, PvPvE in the current download or guaranteed transfer of your character and equipment. Those expectations go beyond what the official descriptions promise.
