Its combat and progression use familiar Soulslike ideas—stamina management, challenging bosses, death-related resource recovery, checkpoints, upgrades, and exploration—while its first-person camera changes how players judge distance, track enemies, and read attacks.
Why Valor Mortis qualifies as a Soulslike
The label reflects more than a marketing comparison. A Valor Mortis community manager, quoted by GamesRadar, described a format built around recovering lost “souls,” lighting checkpoint “bonfires,” challenging bosses, and backtracking to find secrets. The official materials likewise describe it as a first-person action Soulslike.

In Valor Mortis, those conventions are expressed through its own systems: Lanterns serve as checkpoints and places to upgrade, while Catalysts are spent at Lanterns and dropped where protagonist William dies. That combination of risky resource recovery, checkpoint-based progression, boss fights, and deliberate exploration is the clearest reason to classify it as a Soulslike.
How its combat works
The announced combat toolkit combines melee weapons, firearms, supernatural Transmutations, and defensive timing. Players manage stamina while using light and heavy attacks, parries, counterattacks, and dashes. This makes resource management and reading an enemy’s next move central, rather than treating combat as a matter of continuously attacking.

These are recognizable action-RPG tools; their presence alone does not make Valor Mortis unusual. The distinctive challenge is reading and judging them from a first-person view.
Range and abilities
Melee weapons provide close-range attacks, firearms add ranged options, and Transmutations bring supernatural abilities into the mix. The announced variety means combat is not limited to a single weapon range, though the available material does not establish the final balance or how frequently each option is useful.

Death, Lanterns, and upgrades
Catalysts are the upgrade resource described by the publisher: spend them at Lanterns, and they are left where William dies. That creates a familiar Soulslike decision—whether to press onward with what you are carrying or return to recover a lost resource—alongside Lantern-based upgrades and build customization.

What the first-person camera changes
Most Soulslikes use a third-person camera; Valor Mortis places the view at the protagonist’s eye level. One More Level brand manager Michał Azarewicz identified that perspective as the main difference in a VGTimes interview at gamescom 2026.

The change matters because players must judge distance, enemy position, and attack timing without the same view of their character and surroundings that a third-person camera provides. The developer has discussed awareness, field of view, and depth perception as design challenges in adapting Soulslike combat to first person. It said dynamic field-of-view scaling was used to make large bosses easier to read. That is a developer-described design measure, not independent confirmation of how readable every fight feels.
So the camera changes how combat is perceived and navigated; it does not erase the genre’s familiar emphasis on stamina, defensive timing, bosses, and careful progression.

How it compares with other action RPGs
“Action RPG” covers many combat styles, so there is no single template for all games in the category. The useful comparison is whether a game asks you to manage timing and resources, how it presents enemies, and how combat connects to exploration and progression.

In practical terms, expect the Soulslike structure to be more familiar than the presentation: the announced systems point to measured combat and risk-based progression, while the first-person perspective changes how you take in each encounter. The studio has also acknowledged demo feedback on combat readability, hitbox range, enemy staggering, boss difficulty, performance, and the balance between platforming and combat. It said it made improvements after the demo and cautioned that the demo did not represent the full game’s planned launch polish; those are developer statements, not independent test results.

Release timing and what is not yet established
As of October 11, 2026, One More Level had scheduled Valor Mortis to launch on October 13, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, according to its Steam announcement and the PlayStation Store listing. The developer estimated the story at 20 hours in that Steam announcement; this is an estimate, not an independently measured completion time. The scheduled date should not be read as confirmation that launch has occurred.
Because those announcements preceded launch, they do not establish final balance, launch performance, reception, post-launch systems, or actual completion times. The PlayStation listing specifies DualSense vibration and trigger-effect support; it does not make a DualSense controller a requirement. A physical edition was not confirmed in the reviewed official material.
