Short answer: A normal World of Warcraft UI addon that runs through Blizzard’s exposed addon system is generally lower risk than an external automation or client-modification tool, but “addon” is not a blanket safe harbor. If software automates play, mirrors your inputs, reads game memory, changes or injects into the client, bypasses security, or gives an unfair advantage, Blizzard can suspend or permanently close the account.
Blizzard does not publish a reliable percentage chance of being banned for using a particular ordinary addon. The practical standard is conditional: keep the tool inside the authorized in-game interface, keep yourself responsible for every gameplay decision and action, and remove anything that acts like a bot or modifies the game client.

What counts as a WoW addon, and why the distinction matters
World of Warcraft addons are Lua-based extensions that use Blizzard’s in-game addon interface to display information, rearrange frames, create alerts, or provide other UI features. They are loaded by the game rather than running as a separate program that injects code into the client. That technical boundary is important, but it is not the only test.
Blizzard’s Anti-Cheating Agreement treats an unauthorized third-party program broadly. Its examples include an addon or mod that enables cheating, changes the UI, environment or experience in an unauthorized way, or intercepts, mines or collects information from the game. In other words, a file placed in the normal AddOns folder is not automatically approved. What the code does and how it obtains information matter.

The current End User License Agreement (EULA) prohibits cheats, bots, hacks and other unauthorized code that changes or facilitates gameplay. It also states that the platform may monitor computer memory for unauthorized programs and may communicate account, program and detection-time information to Blizzard. That gives Blizzard both a rule basis and a technical basis for taking action when it believes software is unauthorized.

Addon-development requirements
Blizzard’s addon-development policy requires addons to be free, have completely visible code, comply with the World of Warcraft Terms of Use and EULA, and avoid negatively affecting realm performance or other players. A paid download, obfuscated package, or tool that imposes excessive server load therefore deserves extra scrutiny even if it displays a conventional-looking panel.
The policy does not promise that an addon will remain supported forever. Blizzard can change the API, disable an interface capability, or decide that a once-available behavior now crosses the Terms of Use.
Client modification is a separate danger category
In an August 5, 2025 enforcement communication, Blizzard stated: “The use of third-party software that modifies the World of Warcraft game client is against our Terms of Service.” The same communication warned that enforcement can reach permanent account closure. A program that patches files, injects a DLL, hooks client functions, or otherwise changes the executable is therefore not equivalent to a UI addon.

Input broadcasting is actionable
Blizzard’s input-broadcasting policy says that software mirroring one keystroke or action to multiple WoW clients is an actionable offense. The policy describes warnings that can escalate to suspension and permanent closure. This applies even when a person is physically present at the keyboard: the issue is automated duplication of input, not simply owning several accounts.
Blizzard has already narrowed addon powers
Blizzard’s Midnight design discussion explains that addon powers have been restricted repeatedly when they distort moment-to-moment gameplay. Examples include automatic ability or target selection and radar-style overlays. An addon can therefore become non-compliant when a game update removes or limits the API behavior on which it relied.

A package using the normal in-game addon interface is materially different from a separate executable, injector, launcher, driver or memory-reading utility.
- Who makes the decision? Low-risk UI tools present information and wait for your keypress or click. High-risk tools choose targets, cast abilities, move your character, loot, accept quests or complete other gameplay steps without a fresh player action.
- What information does it access? Reading data exposed by the addon API is different from scanning process memory, intercepting network traffic or collecting hidden game information.
- Does it alter the client? File patches, code hooks, DLL injection and security bypasses fall outside ordinary UI customization.
- Does it duplicate input? Mirroring a keystroke or mouse action to several clients is specifically identified as actionable by Blizzard.
- Is the code visible and free? Blizzard’s addon policy calls for completely visible code and free addons. Obfuscation, a paid license or an unexplained companion executable is a warning sign.
- Does it affect other players or realm performance? Excessive automated requests, scanning or deliberately disruptive behavior can violate the addon policy even without combat automation.

How to vet an addon before you install it
- Identify the package. Confirm that the download consists of ordinary addon folders and files placed in the game’s AddOns directory. Do not assume a similarly named launcher or “helper” is part of Blizzard’s addon system.
- Read the installation instructions. Stop if they require administrator privileges, a kernel driver, antivirus exclusions, DLL injection, process hooking, memory access or modified game files. Those are client-modification indicators, not normal UI setup.
- Inspect the source. Blizzard’s policy calls for completely visible code. Look for readable files and a clear explanation of each companion component. Treat encrypted, packed or deliberately obfuscated code as untrusted.
- Map every feature to player input. A safe design can tell you what is happening and suggest an action; you should still press the key, select the target and control movement. Disable or reject features described as “hands-free,” “one-click farming,” “automatic rotation,” “AFK leveling” or similar.
- Check for data collection. Remove tools that claim to reveal hidden units, scan memory, intercept traffic or bypass restrictions. The fact that a feature worked in an earlier patch does not make it authorized now.
- Check distribution and payment. Free distribution and visible code are explicit Blizzard policy expectations. A donation page alone is not proof of a violation, but a paid license tied to hidden code or an executable is a reason not to proceed.
- Keep backups and test conservatively. Save your interface settings, install one addon at a time, and verify that the game still launches without a separate process. If a tool changes behavior after a patch, disable it rather than trying to bypass a new restriction.
- Remove anything questionable completely. Exit the game, uninstall the companion software, restore unmodified client files, and remove leftover startup entries or drivers. Do not keep a prohibited tool installed merely because you are not actively using it.
What about WeakAuras, Questie and Auctionator?
Names alone do not determine authorization. WeakAuras, Questie, Auctionator and similar examples are commonly used as UI or information addons, but the relevant question is whether the particular package and feature stay within Blizzard’s current API and require your input.

WeakAuras-style displays
An aura that displays a cooldown, buff, debuff or other information is closer to ordinary UI customization. A string or package that adds external automation, hidden-data access, automatic targeting or an executable companion changes the analysis. Review imported content as carefully as the base addon; a trusted framework cannot make an unsafe script safe.
Quest and auction information
Quest routing, item displays and market listings can remain informational when you choose the route, buy the item or complete the objective yourself. A tool that accepts quests, moves the character, posts transactions or scans data autonomously is no longer merely presenting a UI.
Macros, multiboxing and “one key” setups
In-game macros are not automatically bannable. A macro that uses Blizzard’s normal macro system and requires your keypress is different from a program that loops inputs or makes decisions outside the client. Macro complexity does not create permission to bypass protected actions or automate play.

Multiboxing also requires a precise distinction. Controlling several accounts manually is different from broadcasting one keystroke to several clients. Blizzard’s input-broadcasting policy specifically warns that mirrored input is actionable, with possible suspension and permanent closure. If each client receives independent, deliberate input rather than a duplicated signal, the policy question is different, but any external automation still carries risk.

What enforcement can look like
Blizzard’s public materials describe warnings, suspensions and permanent account closures. The EULA also reserves monitoring and information-sharing powers concerning unauthorized programs. Do not infer safety from the absence of an immediate warning: enforcement may occur later, and Blizzard does not publish a dependable ban-rate percentage for ordinary addons.
If an account action occurs, preserve the notice, identify every external program that was running, and use Blizzard’s official appeal process. Do not evade a restriction with another client modification or attempt to conceal evidence; that can create additional violations. If you discover that an addon has begun launching a companion executable after an update, stop using it and remove the companion before playing again.
Why a previously safe addon can become unsafe
World of Warcraft’s addon API changes as Blizzard protects competitive integrity, server performance and the intended pace of play. A feature can be disabled, limited to non-combat use, or removed when it starts selecting abilities, selecting targets or acting like a radar. Developers may also release an update that adds a separate helper program, changes code visibility or introduces data collection. Recheck the package after major patches instead of relying on its past reputation.

- Usually the safer choice: a free, readable addon installed in the normal AddOns folder that changes presentation or displays API-provided information while you make every decision and action.
- Do not use: bots, memory readers, packet interceptors, input broadcasters, client patches, security bypasses or software advertised as playing for you.
- When uncertain: uninstall the tool until its behavior, code and distribution model are clear. Blizzard’s rules are conditional, can change, and allow penalties up to permanent account closure.
