Is Tower of Fantasy Worth Playing Solo or With Friends?

Yes—Tower of Fantasy supports both solo exploration and online co-op. It is worth trying if you want a free-to-start, always-online open-world RPG and like having the option to join friends. It is not a fit if you need offline solo play. If your group is spread across PlayStation, PC, and mobile, check current server and account compatibility before planning to play together: the available official information does not confirm that every platform can join the same servers.

Can you play Tower of Fantasy solo?

Yes. The official PlayStation description explicitly says players can explore the world solo or with friends, solve puzzles, and engage in real-time combat. The game is an online service, though: solo means playing without a group, not playing offline. PlayStation lists online play as required.

The storefronts describe an open world with exploration, puzzles, weapon switching, and real-time combat. PlayStation also describes more than 30 weapons, customizable characters, and Simulacra—weapon companions with abilities and backstories. These are the publishers’ descriptions, not a guarantee that every part of the game will suit a particular player’s taste.

Can you play Tower of Fantasy with friends?

Yes. Steam lists online co-op, and PlayStation describes exploring with friends and taking on guild quests. That makes it a reasonable option for people who want to explore together without needing a group for every session.

Restoration Games Return to Dark Tower, Fantasy Board Game for 1-4 Players
  • HOW TO PLAY: In this strategy board game, choose a hero, explore the realm, gather resources, cleanse locations, and complete quests. Work together or compete, then face the Tower in a final battle where you have one chance to defeat the enemy.
  • EPIC QUESTS: Immerse yourself in a rich, evolving narrative inspired by the legendary 1981 classic. Every game delivers a unique story filled with unexpected twists, dangerous foes, and strategic decisions that shape your path to victory.
  • CO-OP OR COMPETITIVE MODES: Play fully cooperatively to save the realm together, or race to complete three Heroic Tests and reach the tower to be the first to defeat the final adversary. Flexible game modes let you tailor your gaming experience.
  • INNOVATIVE GAMEPLAY: Return to Dark Tower features traditional mechanisms like engine building and resource management, paired with a technological interface, including the titular tower filled with hidden secrets.
  • LEGENDARY RETURN: A “sequel” to the 1981 grail game, Return to Dark Tower has 1-4 players take on heroic roles to gather resources, defeat monsters, complete quests, and uncover the enemy awaiting them.

“With friends” depends on more than the game having co-op: players need compatible platforms, accounts, and servers. The available platform information does not establish that PlayStation players can join a particular PC or mobile server, so confirm compatibility before choosing where your group will start.

Can PlayStation and PC players play together?

Do not assume they can. Steam labels the PC version as having cross-platform multiplayer, but that label alone does not explain PlayStation-to-PC compatibility or which servers are shared. In a February 17, 2025 notice, the Tower of Fantasy Team said it planned to introduce cross-platform login and full progress sync across PlayStation, PC, and mobile during 2025. That was a plan, not confirmation of its completion, and login or progress sync is different from multiplayer cross-play.

Before making a group plan, check the current in-game server options and official platform guidance for your region. The available information does not establish whether progress sync is available in every case or what account-linking steps apply.

Solo versus playing with friends

Question Solo With friends
Is it supported? Yes; PlayStation explicitly describes solo exploration. Yes; PlayStation describes friend-group exploration, and Steam lists online co-op.
What activities are named? Exploration, puzzles, and real-time combat. Shared exploration and guild quests.
Does it work offline? No on PlayStation; online play is required. No; co-op is online.
What should you check first? Whether always-online play is acceptable on your platform. Whether everyone can use compatible platforms, accounts, and servers; cross-platform rules are not fully established.

Is Tower of Fantasy free, and what about purchases?

The PlayStation listing describes the game as free and says in-game purchases are optional; Steam lists the PC version as free-to-play and includes in-app purchases. “Free-to-start” is the safest way to think about it: the listings do not establish that every item or progression shortcut is free, or whether spending is necessary for a particular endgame activity.

  • Need offline play: Skip it if offline solo gaming is essential; PlayStation requires an online connection.
  • Choosing based on reputation: Steam’s current review category is Mixed, but the percentages are time-sensitive storefront data rather than a broad measure of player satisfaction.
