Yes—Total War: SHOGUN 2 can still be worth buying if you want a focused historical strategy game that combines turn-based realm management with real-time battles. The important choice in 2026 is which edition and storefront you buy. SEGA’s Complete Edition brings the original campaign, two standalone historical campaigns, associated downloadable content, technical updates and new mod support. Steam also includes the original game and its associated DLC (except the Blood Pack), while the Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG listings include the Complete Edition only.
That value comes with two qualifications. The original game launched on March 15, 2011, and Complete Edition mods are not compatible with mods made for the original version. The announced price, launch availability, loyalty discount and regional entitlements are time-sensitive, so check the store and your account before paying.

What you actually get in Total War: SHOGUN 2
SHOGUN 2 is a hybrid strategy game. On the campaign map, you manage a Japanese clan through turn-based decisions about territory, economy, diplomacy and armies. When forces meet, the game switches to real-time land or naval battles where positioning, formations, terrain, fire and siege tactics determine the result.
The original Steam description presents the objective as uniting 16th-century Japan. It includes diplomacy, spies and assassins alongside military operations, so progress is not simply a sequence of battles. You can weaken rivals politically, disrupt their plans with agents, build an economy that supports larger armies and choose when a direct assault is worth the risk.

Steam lists single-player, online and LAN player-versus-player, and online and LAN cooperative modes. Its store copy calls the game “the perfect mix of real-time and turn-based strategy gaming for newcomers and veterans alike”; that is store description rather than an independent review. The original listing is available at Steam.
Complete Edition expands the historical scope beyond the Sengoku Jidai campaign. SEGA describes three standalone campaigns covering more than 700 years:
- SHOGUN 2: the Sengoku Jidai, the era of rival clans competing to control Japan.
- Rise of the Samurai: the Genpei War, with the announcement placing its setting in 1175.
- Fall of the Samurai: the Boshin War and Japan’s industrialisation, where traditional forces face modernising warfare.
This variety matters if you enjoy the campaign layer but want different political situations and military technologies. Fall of the Samurai is not a separate purchase in Complete Edition; it is one of the included standalone campaigns.
Which SHOGUN 2 edition should you buy?
Edition value depends heavily on where you buy and whether you already own the original Steam release. SEGA’s FAQ gives the following entitlement differences:
| Purchase route | Included content | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Complete Edition | Complete Edition plus the original Total War: SHOGUN 2 and its associated DLC | The Blood Pack is excluded because of age-rating requirements |
| Epic Games Store | Complete Edition | The FAQ does not list the original Steam package as an entitlement |
| Microsoft Store | Complete Edition | The FAQ does not list the original Steam package as an entitlement |
| GOG | Complete Edition | The FAQ does not list the original Steam package as an entitlement |
| Existing Steam ownership | Your original game remains playable; missing original DLC is granted at no cost | Qualifying owners are also offered a time-limited Complete Edition loyalty discount |
The original Steam game stopped being available as a standalone purchase on September 28, 2026, according to SEGA. The store page remains as an ownership and information page, but new buyers are directed to Complete Edition. If you owned the original before that change, your existing copy remains playable.

For a new PC buyer
Steam is the most expansive entitlement on paper because SEGA says it includes both Complete Edition and the original SHOGUN 2 with associated DLC, apart from the Blood Pack. Choose another listed storefront if its launcher, regional availability, offline behavior or account ecosystem matters more to you, but do not assume those versions include the legacy game.
For an existing Steam owner
Your original purchase is not discarded. SEGA says existing owners receive any missing original DLC at no cost and qualify for a 75% loyalty discount on Complete Edition. The discount is scheduled to run from launch until November 12, 2026 at 16:00 GMT (08:00 PST, 00:00 CST+1 and 01:00 JST+1). Confirm that the discount appears on your own account; regional pricing and eligibility can differ.

Does Complete Edition include all DLC?
SEGA describes Complete Edition as an updated and enhanced package containing all associated DLC, including the major Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai campaigns. The announcement also says it gathers faction packs and other content updates.
On Steam, the package additionally grants the original game and its associated DLC, with one explicit exception: the Blood Pack is not included because of age-rating restrictions. That exception applies to the legacy Steam entitlement described by SEGA; do not treat “all DLC” as a promise that every storefront has identical extras.
If you are checking an existing library rather than making a new purchase, SEGA’s FAQ says owners receive missing original DLC at no cost. Open the game and downloadable-content pages for your account to verify that the entitlements have been applied before buying another copy.

Launch timing, price and the risk of stale store information
SEGA’s FAQ listed Complete Edition for October 13, 2026 at 16:00 BST, 08:00 PDT, 23:00 CST and 00:00 JST on October 14. The announced list price was £34.99, €39.99 or $39.99. Those figures were published before the scheduled release and may not match a live regional price, tax treatment or later promotion.
Because storefront status, discounts and regional pricing change, use the official SEGA Complete Edition FAQ and the store page immediately before purchase. Existing Steam owners should look specifically for the loyalty offer and its expiry date rather than assuming the advertised percentage is still active.
What is new in Complete Edition?
SEGA’s stated changes target presentation, controls, accessibility, localisation and platform technology. They are publisher-stated features, not independently tested performance results.
- Updated graphics: revised lighting, shadows and textures.
- Higher-resolution interface: UI scaling for 1440p and 4K displays.
- Modernised controls: updated input and control behavior intended for current systems.
- Language support: Japanese and Chinese voice acting with full-text localisation.
- More playable factions: more than 50 newly playable minor factions, according to SEGA.
- Display support: ultrawide monitor support.
- Accessibility: colourblind options.
- 64-bit upgrade: a move away from the original 32-bit-era technology.
- Integrated mod support: Mod.io support inside the new edition.
The official announcement is available from SEGA Corporation. It does not establish frame-rate gains, exact system requirements, compatibility with every monitor or the behavior of every accessibility setting. Treat those as questions to check in current user reports and the live store information rather than guaranteed outcomes.
Will your existing SHOGUN 2 mods work?
No. Mods created for the original SHOGUN 2 are not compatible with Complete Edition. Complete Edition launches with Mod.io support, but that is a separate mod ecosystem. SEGA says mods for the original game remain unchanged; it does not say that Workshop or other community files transfer automatically.

If legacy mods are essential
Keep the original Steam installation if you depend on a particular overhaul, campaign conversion, interface change or compatibility fix. Do not remove a working original setup until you have confirmed that an equivalent Complete Edition version exists. Owning both versions can be useful for mod separation: original-compatible files stay with the original game, while Complete Edition files use its Mod.io system.
If you prefer an easier modern setup
Complete Edition’s integrated Mod.io support may be more convenient than managing an older installation, but the available catalog and individual mod quality can change. Check the page for each mod you need; “mod support” does not mean that every original project has been ported.
How much campaign variety is enough?
The base SHOGUN 2 campaign is a concentrated 16th-century clan struggle. Complete Edition lets you move backward to the Genpei War or forward to the Boshin War and industrialisation. These are not cosmetic maps on the same campaign: each is a standalone setting with its own historical context and military emphasis.
That makes Complete Edition a stronger fit for players who want one purchase to cover multiple eras. It is less compelling if you only want the original Sengoku Jidai campaign and already have a stable, modded copy. The extra campaigns add breadth, but they do not change the fundamental turn-based-planning and real-time-battle structure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs a 2011 strategy game still enjoyable?
The original launched on March 15, 2011, so its age is relevant. Its core design remains distinctive: campaign decisions resolve in turns, while battles ask you to command units directly in real time. Players who value a clear historical setting, diplomacy and tactical control may find that structure more important than modern presentation.
Players who expect contemporary interface scaling, ultrawide support, accessibility controls or 64-bit technology should evaluate Complete Edition rather than assuming the legacy build will feel current. Even then, SEGA’s feature list is not a substitute for independent testing of performance or bugs on your particular computer.
Steam displayed 92% positive from 21,950 English reviews overall and 73% positive from 317 recent reviews when accessed in 2026. Steam notes that off-topic review periods are excluded. These are platform snapshots, not controlled quality tests, and both the percentages and counts can change.
Who should buy it?
Buy Complete Edition if you want
- A historical strategy campaign with both turn-based management and real-time battles.
- Three campaigns spanning more than 700 years of Japanese history.
- All major campaign content and associated DLC in one package.
- Updated lighting, textures, high-resolution UI scaling and modernised controls.
- Japanese and Chinese voice acting, full-text localisation, ultrawide support and colourblind options.
- Mod.io integration and access to the newer edition’s mod ecosystem.
- The Steam legacy game and associated DLC as part of the package, excluding the Blood Pack.
Consider waiting or keeping the original if you
- Rely on original SHOGUN 2 mods that have not been ported.
- Already own the original and do not need the additional campaigns or technical updates.
- Need verified performance on a specific older computer, ultrawide display or accessibility setup before spending money.
- Are deciding solely on a temporary price and cannot confirm the live regional offer.
Buying checklist
- Identify your ownership status. Sign in to the store account you will use. Existing Steam owners should check for the loyalty offer before purchasing.
- Choose the storefront deliberately. Steam is the only listed route SEGA says also grants the original game and associated DLC; the Blood Pack remains excluded.
- Verify the live price. The announced reference prices are £34.99, €39.99 and $39.99, but taxes, regional pricing and promotions can alter the checkout total.
- Check the launch and sale window. The FAQ scheduled launch for October 13, 2026 and the Steam-owner discount through November 12, 2026. Confirm current status rather than relying on an old countdown.
- Inventory your must-have mods. Search for Complete Edition or Mod.io versions before uninstalling the original game. Original mods do not transfer automatically.
- Review platform compatibility. The original Steam page lists legacy operating-system requirements and notes that the Steam Client supports Windows 10 and later from January 1, 2024. Do not use those old requirements as a modern compatibility guarantee; check the current store page and your system.
- Decide whether the extra campaigns matter. If Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai are part of your plan, Complete Edition’s bundled structure is more valuable than a legacy-only purchase.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every storefront includes the same package: SEGA distinguishes Steam from Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG.
- Reading “all DLC” as including the Blood Pack everywhere: Steam’s legacy entitlement specifically excludes it for age-rating reasons.
- Expecting old mods to work: Complete Edition’s Mod.io support does not make original mods compatible.
- Using the announced price as a guaranteed checkout total: price and discount information is time-sensitive.
- Treating review percentages as benchmarks: Steam review snapshots describe user sentiment at a point in time, not measured performance or a controlled test.
- Assuming publisher features prove flawless behavior: updated graphics, accessibility and 64-bit support still need to work correctly on your hardware and display.
Final buying decision
For a new buyer, Complete Edition is the logical starting point when the Steam entitlement, three campaigns and modernization features match your priorities. Steam offers the broadest package described by SEGA, while other listed PC storefronts provide Complete Edition without the separately described original-game entitlement.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For an existing Steam owner, the decision is more conditional: the free missing legacy DLC and a scheduled 75% loyalty discount make upgrading attractive if you want the new campaigns, presentation updates or Mod.io ecosystem. Keep the original installation if its mods are important, because those files will not work in Complete Edition.
In short, SHOGUN 2 remains worth buying for players who want its distinctive historical strategy loop and accept the edition and mod trade-offs. Confirm the live store price, availability and account-specific entitlements before checkout.
