The headline’s 44% discount is not verified, and it does not identify which Western Digital drive is supposedly on sale. The available evidence confirms past WD promotions, not a current Prime Day offer. Check the exact model, live price and sale dates before treating the claim as a deal.
What the available deal evidence actually shows
PCWorld reported that the WD Elements 14TB external hard drive was listed on Amazon for $169.99, compared with a stated regular price of $279.99, during the October 7–8, 2025 Prime Big Deal Days event. That is a historical offer, not a current price. The difference is about 39%, not 44%. PCWorld’s October 2025 report does not establish an exact model number.

A separate Laptop Mag roundup from July 2022 used “up to 44%” to describe several WD drive offers, including an Elements SE 2TB external SSD, an Elements 16TB external HDD, a WD_Black P10 5TB and a My Passport for Mac 5TB. That was a group of historical offers, not evidence that one unnamed drive currently has a 44% discount. Laptop Mag’s 2022 roundup does not substantiate a live Prime Day deal.
A page that repeats the headline without identifying the product or offer does not confirm the claim. The surfaced headline page supplies no underlying drive or deal details.

How to check whether a live listing is a real deal
- Identify the exact product. Find the drive’s model name and capacity in the retailer listing; “Western Digital external drive” could refer to products with different formats and intended uses.
- Check the current price and claimed comparison price. Treat a percentage as unverified unless the listing clearly states the price basis. Do not substitute a historical price for today’s offer.
- Confirm sale timing and eligibility. Check the event dates, end time and any Prime-member requirement on the live listing. The historical reports do not establish current terms.
- Match the drive to your use. Compare capacity, desktop or portable form factor, HDD or SSD type, connection and compatibility with your device. The cited reports describe products across these categories but do not establish current performance or value comparisons.
Which WD drive type fits the job?
The historical examples show why the model matters more than a headline discount: a portable SSD, a high-capacity desktop HDD and a gaming-oriented portable HDD are not interchangeable simply because each is an external drive.
- For large media libraries or backups: Check whether the listing is for a desktop HDD and whether its capacity and connection suit your setup. The historical 14TB Elements example was described for media, games and backups, with USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports; that description does not establish the specifications of an unnamed current offer. PCWorld’s product description.
- For portability: Confirm that the specific model is designed to travel with you; the broad label “external drive” alone does not tell you its form factor.
- For an SSD or gaming drive: Verify the product category and intended use on the listing rather than assuming that a discount on one WD model applies to another.
What remains unconfirmed
The available deal reports do not establish the exact drive behind the 44% headline, a current listing or price, whether a current offer is Prime-eligible, or when it ends. Until those details are visible on a live retailer page, the 44% figure and “Prime Day” wording should be treated as unverified—not as a confirmed offer.
