Its screen is 3.7 inches, not three, and the trade-off is clear: easy carry and physical page-turn buttons in exchange for no front light, no touchscreen, and a smaller reading area. It makes the most sense for short reading sessions between other tasks, provided its file-transfer workflow suits your books.
What the Xteink X3 is—and what “3-inch” means
The headline describing a “3-inch eReader” rounds the size down. Xteink specifies a 3.7-inch display with a 259 PPI resolution. The device weighs 58 g, is 5.1 mm thick, and has 16 GB of storage, expandable by microSD up to 256 GB. Its battery is rated at 650 mAh. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance measurements. Xteink’s X3 product page lists the full hardware details.

The size changes the device’s role. It is built to be carried easily and picked up for a few pages, rather than to provide the broad page and interface of a conventional eReader. The Atlantic’s Saahil Desai, who wrote about spending several weeks with the X3, described attaching it magnetically to the back of an iPhone and reading in spare moments. That is one writer’s use, not a requirement or a guarantee that every phone, case, or setup will work the same way. Desai’s September 6, 2026 account focuses on that portability trade-off.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan you read a full-length book on a screen this small?
Yes, a small screen can display the text of a full-length book, but the reading experience is more compact: each page holds less text, so you turn pages more often and have less room for menus, margins, or illustrations. Whether that feels comfortable depends on your eyesight, preferred text size, and how long you intend to read at a stretch. The X3’s physical page-turn buttons suit frequent page changes, but the small display is not automatically comfortable for every reader or every session.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Desai reported reading for ten hours through Robert Caro’s The Power Broker and said the text was easy for him to read; he also said three hours of reading did not strain his eyes. Those are personal impressions, not a controlled test or a promise about another reader’s comfort. He also wrote that he finished three books in one month with the X3 after finishing one in the prior two months, and that his average daily iPhone screen time fell by 25 minutes. These figures are his own account, not population-level evidence that a tiny eReader improves reading habits or reduces phone use.
What you give up for portability
No built-in light
The X3’s listed hardware has no front light. You will need ambient light to read, so it is not suited to a dark room unless you provide an external light source. The manufacturer’s detailed specification also lists no touchscreen. The product page’s specification list identifies the controls and display features.

Button navigation instead of touch
Physical page-turn buttons are useful if you want to advance pages without tapping the display. But touch-based navigation is not available on the X3’s listed hardware, so expect to use buttons for page turns and device interaction rather than tapping text or interface controls.

Xteink’s detailed specification lists EPUB and TXT documents, JPG and BMP images, Wi-Fi at 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth, app transfer, and microSD card transfer. The manufacturer’s comparison table shows a broader format list for the X3—including MOBI, PDF, and PNG—than the detailed specification does. Because those listings do not agree, check the current firmware and product documentation for the exact formats you need instead of assuming every format in the comparison table will work as expected.

Desai described the preloaded software as poor at handling covers and some text formatting, and reported friction transferring Amazon books, with no one-click transfer in his workflow. That is his experience, not proof that every book or transfer method is unsupported. If your library depends on a particular store, app, or file format, verify the exact transfer path before buying; the official listing of EPUB and TXT support does not establish seamless Kindle-store integration.
Is the X3 a better fit than a slightly larger model?
The manufacturer’s comparison table positions the X4 Pro as a larger, more feature-rich option. The listed differences help clarify whether the X3’s small size is worth its limits:

These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not results from an independent side-by-side test. The X3’s detailed specification page names fewer formats than the comparison table, so confirm the format support for the specific device and firmware you are considering. Desai also characterized the X4 Pro as slightly larger and more expensive in his September 2026 article; that report does not establish a current price difference.
Who should consider the Xteink X3?
- It may suit you if you prioritize a lightweight device you can carry nearly anywhere, mainly read in good ambient light, prefer physical buttons, and are comfortable checking file compatibility and transfer steps.
- It is a poor fit if you need a built-in reading light, touch controls, a larger page for long sessions, or a reliably simple route from your existing digital library.
- Before choosing it, test whether your usual text size is comfortable on a 3.7-inch display and confirm that your books can be transferred in a supported format.
The official product page has listed X3 cases and screen protectors, but stock and compatibility can change. The page displayed the selected US configuration as sold out when accessed on October 7, 2026, at $69; that is a dated product-page snapshot, not a current price or availability guarantee.
