No. The ViewSonic XG2401 is specified as a 144Hz monitor and supports 1920×1080 at 144Hz when the selected mode and the entire connection chain can carry that signal. Seeing only 60Hz or 120Hz usually indicates a Windows, game, cable, adapter, port, or laptop limitation—not false advertising.
ViewSonic lists the XG2401 as a 24-inch 1920×1080 TN display with a maximum 144Hz refresh rate, 1ms typical GTG response time, two HDMI inputs, one DisplayPort input, and FreeSync/Adaptive-Sync support. The model is now discontinued. ViewSonic product specifications
What “144Hz” means on the XG2401
Refresh rate is how often the monitor can redraw the image each second. Frame rate is how many frames the computer or game renders. Selected refresh rate is the mode actually sent to the monitor. These are related but not interchangeable: a game reporting 144 frames per second does not prove that the display is receiving 144Hz, and a 144Hz display can feel slow if the game is capped at 60 frames per second.
FreeSync or Adaptive-Sync can vary the refresh behavior to follow the graphics processor’s frame output. It does not force the panel to run continuously at 144Hz. The correct baseline mode for this monitor is 1920×1080 at 144Hz.

ViewSonic’s support documentation explicitly confirms 1920×1080 at 144Hz. It says HDMI operation requires a graphics output capable of HDMI 1.4 with a 340MHz pixel-clock capability or HDMI 2.0, plus an appropriate high-bandwidth cable. ViewSonic HDMI and 144Hz guidance
Use DisplayPort for the first test
For a desktop PC, connect GPU DisplayPort output → XG2401 DisplayPort input with no dock, KVM, capture device, adapter, or daisy chain. ViewSonic lists a DisplayPort cable in the package contents. A native DisplayPort path removes many HDMI-version, adapter, and laptop-output variables.
HDMI 144Hz is not impossible on this model, but every part of the HDMI path must support the required 1080p/144Hz signal. A port labeled HDMI 1.4 is not by itself proof that its implementation has the required 340MHz pixel-clock capability. Use a reputable high-bandwidth or Premium-certified HDMI cable, as ViewSonic recommends.
Do not assume an inexpensive HDMI-to-DisplayPort cable will solve the problem. Such cables may be directional or actively convert standards and can add their own limits. A direct DisplayPort output is the more useful diagnostic.

Set 144Hz in Windows
- Connect the monitor directly to the graphics card and power it on.
- Open Settings → System → Display.
- Select the ViewSonic display if more than one monitor is connected.
- Set the resolution to 1920×1080.
- Open the advanced display or display-adapter-properties page (the label varies by Windows version).
- Choose 144Hz, apply the change, and confirm the image remains stable.
If 144Hz is not listed, check the input and cable, remove adapters and docks, try another GPU output, update or reinstall the graphics driver, and test another computer. A lower-resolution or television-format mode can expose fewer refresh choices than the PC 1920×1080 mode.
Check the graphics-control panel
NVIDIA
Open NVIDIA Control Panel → Display → Change resolution. Select the ViewSonic, choose the PC resolution category when available, select 1920×1080, and then choose 144Hz. The television-format entry can hide refresh rates that are available in the PC list.
AMD
In AMD Software, open the display settings and verify that the active mode is 1920×1080 at 144Hz. If the driver rejects the mode, the output, cable, monitor identification data, or driver installation may be limiting it.
Intel and laptops
A laptop’s external-output capability depends on its physical port and implementation, not only on the monitor. An older HDMI controller may stop at 60Hz or 120Hz, while the same laptop may support a higher rate through USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode. Check the exact laptop specification rather than assuming every USB-C dock or HDMI socket can produce 144Hz.

Check the game separately
Windows can be set correctly while a game uses its own mode. In the game’s display menu, check:
- Resolution: 1920×1080
- Refresh rate: 144Hz, if offered
- Fullscreen or borderless behavior
- V-Sync and frame-rate limits
- Driver-level frame caps
- Render-resolution scale
A game limited to 80 frames per second is not evidence that the monitor is running at 80Hz. Conversely, a 144-FPS overlay measures rendered frames, not necessarily the signal delivered to the display.
Verify the actual signal
Use at least two independent checks:
- Windows advanced-display information, showing 1920×1080 at 144Hz.
- The monitor’s on-screen display information page; ViewSonic documentation includes an information section.
- A reputable browser motion test as corroboration.
Browser tests can be affected by browser throttling, background applications, synchronization, and frame delivery. Treat them as supporting evidence, not a replacement for the operating system and monitor-reported mode. Also remember that ViewSonic’s 1ms GTG figure is a typical response-time specification, not a guarantee that every pixel transition completes in exactly 1ms under every overdrive setting.
Why a system may stop at 120Hz
120Hz is usually a signal-path or mode limitation, not proof that the panel is only a 120Hz design. Common causes include:

- HDMI bandwidth or an older HDMI implementation
- An unsuitable or damaged cable
- A dock, KVM, adapter, or capture device
- A laptop’s restricted external output
- The wrong resolution category in a GPU panel
- Driver filtering or a game-specific 120Hz cap
- A console’s supported output modes
Community reports of XG2401 systems topping out at 120Hz are anecdotal and show possible setup failures, not a product-wide defect. Example report
If 144Hz is selected but motion still looks wrong
- Confirm the game is rendering enough frames and has no restrictive cap.
- Check V-Sync, frame pacing, and driver limits.
- Make sure the cable is connected to the graphics card rather than the motherboard video output.
- Distinguish refresh rate from pixel-response smearing or overdrive artifacts.
- Check whether the browser or test application is being throttled.
If 144Hz works intermittently
Intermittent operation can come from a marginal cable, loose connector, sleep/wake handshaking, input switching, a dock or KVM, custom timings, GPU overclock instability, or a failing input.
- Return temporarily to 1920×1080 at 60Hz.
- Power-cycle the computer and monitor.
- Reconnect the cable firmly.
- Try another known-good DisplayPort cable and another GPU port.
- Reset the monitor’s on-screen settings to factory defaults.
- Remove custom resolutions and GPU overclocks.
- Retest with direct DisplayPort and a second computer.
If a known-compatible computer cannot sustain 1920×1080 at 144Hz over direct DisplayPort after those checks, a monitor or graphics-output fault becomes substantially more plausible.

This is a documentation inconsistency. It could reflect an early, regional, or erroneous sheet, but it does not establish a hidden hardware revision or outweigh ViewSonic’s current 1920×1080-at-144Hz support statement.
When is a return or replacement justified?
- Probably normal: 144Hz works at 1920×1080 over direct DisplayPort, or the limitation occurs only with one cable, adapter, game, laptop, or console.
- Probably the connection: DisplayPort works but HDMI does not, a cable swap restores 144Hz, or removing a dock or KVM fixes it.
- Hardware becomes likely: direct DisplayPort, native resolution, multiple known-good cables and GPU ports, and a second compatible computer all fail; the monitor also flickers, drops signal, or loses high refresh after warming up.
Do not use a custom resolution as the first fix. Custom timings can cause blank screens or out-of-range errors; restore native timings and defaults if that happens.
Buying a used XG2401
- Verify the label says XG2401, not XG2402 or another XG-series model.
- Demonstrate 1920×1080 at 144Hz before paying, preferably over DisplayPort.
- Inspect dead pixels, backlight condition, stand hardware, and included cable.
- Ask whether the seller accepts returns.
- Discount for the fact that ViewSonic lists the model as discontinued.
Do not pay a premium merely because the listing says “144Hz”; require a live demonstration or clear return protection.
Should you replace it?
If the monitor passes the direct-DisplayPort test, replacing it is unnecessary. A replacement cable is the lowest-cost intervention when only the cable is suspect, but no cable can overcome a bandwidth-limited laptop, dock, adapter, or GPU output.

For a new 24-inch 1080p display, ViewSonic’s VX2428A is an IPS model rated at 180Hz; its US page showed $109.99 and in-stock status. The XG2431 is a newer 240Hz IPS option with FreeSync Premium, listed G-Sync compatibility, and HDR400. ASUS also lists 24–25-inch 1080p Fast IPS models around 180Hz in its TUF Gaming range; the listing does not establish a reliable current checkout price. Higher refresh is worthwhile only if the computer can render correspondingly high frame rates, and a newer IPS monitor may differ from the XG2401’s TN motion characteristics and stand ergonomics.
