The Survivalists is an adventure-survival sandbox set on an island. Its central loop combines exploration, gathering, construction and crafting with training monkeys to help with survival tasks. Microsoft’s Xbox Store describes monkey management as part of the game’s survival system and lists Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S as supported platforms.

What is missing from the December-upgrade claim?
The official material available for this report contains no Team17 or Xbox announcement specifying an upgrade release date in December. It also contains no statement about whether the upgrade would be free, whether it would use Smart Delivery, which editions would qualify, or whether owners would need to download a separate Series X|S version.
Until Team17 or Xbox publishes those details, treat “free Xbox Series X|S upgrade this December” as an unverified claim rather than a confirmed release plan. A store page showing Series X|S support is not equivalent to an announcement of a new upgrade program.

Can you try The Survivalists through Game Pass?
Xbox Wire reported a Free Play Days promotion running from September 3 through September 6, 2026 for Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and Essential members. That access window has ended, so it should not be treated as a current trial or an ongoing Game Pass benefit. The event demonstrates a temporary access route, not a standing subscription entitlement.
What existing owners should do
- Check the Xbox Store page for the edition you own and confirm that it lists Xbox Series X|S support.
- Look for a direct Team17 or Xbox announcement before assuming a December upgrade is scheduled.
- Do not pay an upgrade fee—or buy another edition solely for next-generation access—until the entitlement rules are published.
- If an announcement appears, verify the eligible edition, release date, installation method and whether saved data transfers before downloading.
Bottom line on the December story
The Survivalists is the likely “forgotten monkey survival” game in the headline, and it is already listed for Xbox Series X|S.
