What Steam Deck Verified means for JRPGs
Valve’s Steam Deck is a handheld PC that can run games in your Steam library, and Steam lets you filter games by Deck compatibility. But there is no blanket “JRPG-compatible” rating. Each game receives its own status, and that status can change as games and their updates are reviewed.

Valve describes Verified games as ones that “work great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.” Its review looks at four areas: input, display, seamlessness, and system support. That makes the badge a useful signal about basic usability, not a performance guarantee.
- Input: The game supports the Deck’s controls, uses suitable input prompts, and brings up the on-screen keyboard automatically when needed.
- Display: The game supports the Deck’s default resolutions—1280×800 or 1280×720—with suitable default settings and legible text.
- Seamlessness: The game does not show a compatibility warning, and any launcher can be navigated with a controller.
- System support: The game and required middleware, including anti-cheat where relevant, work with the Deck’s system software and Proton.
Those checks do not promise a particular frame rate, graphics quality, or battery runtime. A game can pass Valve’s usability criteria without the badge telling you how it will perform at a specific graphics setting.

Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown: what’s the difference?
| Steam Deck status | What it tells you | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | Valve says the game works well on Deck out of the box. | It meets Valve’s checks for controls, display, seamlessness, and system support. |
| Playable | The game works, but may need manual adjustments. | You might need to choose a community controller layout or use the touchscreen to navigate a launcher. |
| Unsupported | Valve currently considers the game nonfunctional on Deck. | Do not buy it expecting a working Deck experience based on this status. |
| Unknown | Valve has not checked the title yet. | The lack of a rating is not evidence that the game works or does not work. |
Valve’s compatibility criteria explain the categories and checks in detail. If you are willing to troubleshoot, a Playable game may still suit you; if you want to install and start playing with minimal setup, prioritize Verified.
Which JRPGs are Steam Deck Verified?
Steam’s catalog includes well-known JRPGs, but always confirm each game’s current badge on its Steam store page or in your library. For example, Steam lists FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH as a JRPG and displays Steam Deck Compatibility: Verified. Its listing gives a 155 GB storage requirement, so check that you have sufficient space before installing.

These are examples, not a guarantee for every game in the genre. A game you own may not be on Steam, and even titles from the same series can have different compatibility results. Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
- List your must-play games. Check each title’s current Steam Deck rating rather than relying on a genre label or a general compatibility list.
- Decide how much friction is acceptable. Verified suits a plug-and-play preference; Playable may be fine if you are comfortable adjusting controls or navigating launchers manually.
- Consider text and controls. Valve checks display legibility and input, but think about whether you will enjoy reading menus and using the controls in the games you play most.
- Make sure the Steam library is the right fit. The Deck is most relevant if the games you want are available on Steam and you want to play that library on a handheld PC.
- Choose LCD or OLED for reasons beyond the badge. Valve says compatibility ratings apply to both LCD and OLED Deck models, so Verified status by itself does not distinguish between them.
How to check a game before buying
- Open the game’s Steam store page and look for its Steam Deck Compatibility status. You can also check the game in your Steam library.
- Read the actual category. Verified and Playable have different setup expectations; Unsupported and Unknown should not be treated as positive compatibility results.
- Review the listing details that matter to you. For a large JRPG such as FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH, compare its stated storage requirement with the space available on your Deck.
- Check again near purchase or play time. Valve’s ratings and the catalog are live and can change as compatibility reviews and game updates arrive.
