PCWorld reported on October 5, 2026, that Sony’s WH-1000XM5 headphones were $198—50% off its cited $400 price—ahead of October Prime Day. That dated report does not confirm a live Amazon deal: the linked Amazon listing showed no featured offer when checked. Sony’s U.S. store separately displayed the black model for $198, down from $399.99, on October 7, 2026.
Is the WH-1000XM5 actually 50% off right now?
There are two separate price claims to keep straight. PCWorld Deals Editor Gabriela Vatu reported the $198 Amazon-linked deal on October 5, describing it as 50% off ahead of October Prime Day. TechRadar also covered early Prime Day discounts that day, but that is editorial sale coverage, not an official Amazon event notice.

Sony’s own U.S. product page displayed the black WH-1000XM5 for $198, a stated saving of $201.99 from $399.99, when checked October 7, 2026. That is Sony’s store price, not proof of an Amazon offer. The linked Amazon product listing showed no featured offer at inspection, so check the retailer page for a current seller, price, stock, color, and condition before buying.
- PCWorld’s October 5 deal report gives the dated $198 Amazon-linked claim.
- Sony’s U.S. product page displayed $198 against $399.99 on October 7, 2026; prices can change.
- The linked Amazon listing had no featured offer when inspected.
What you get for the price
The WH-1000XM5 is a closed, over-ear Bluetooth headphone. Sony lists Bluetooth 5.2 and support for SBC, AAC, and LDAC audio codecs. Sony also says two processors control eight microphones for noise cancellation and call quality; that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent performance measurement.

For battery life, Sony specifies up to 30 hours of continuous music playback with noise canceling on, or up to 40 hours with it off. Sony lists charging time at approximately 3.5 hours. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured results. In the box, Sony lists a carrying case, connection cable, and USB cable.

Should you buy at $198?
If you want this specific over-ear model and can confirm a $198 offer from a seller and retailer you trust, the price is half of the roughly $400 reference price cited in the October 5 deal coverage. The same $198 figure appeared on Sony’s U.S. store page on October 7. The deal case is strongest for buyers who will use the noise canceling and value the listed case and cables; the cited battery figures also show the tradeoff between using noise canceling and maximizing playback time.
Do not treat the headline discount as proof that Amazon currently has the headphones at that price. If Amazon has no available offer, the dated article is not a reason to buy from an unverified seller or to assume the deal will return. Compare the live checkout price and seller details before placing an order.
