What the Sonos Sub 4 adds to movies
Sonos describes the Sub 4 as a wireless subwoofer designed to add deeper lows to movies and shows. That makes it an option for viewers who want more weight from low-frequency effects in a compatible Sonos home theater setup. It is not a universal subwoofer that connects to any soundbar: it is intended to work within the Sonos system.

Sonos’ 2024 fact sheet lists two inward-facing 5 × 8-inch elliptical woofers and a ported cabinet, and says the Sub 4 reaches levels as low as 25 Hz. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements or a guarantee of the bass you will hear in every room. Room layout, placement, content and the rest of the Sonos system all matter.

Sonos says Sub 4 works with its home theater speakers except Playbar and Playbase, and its setup guidance lists additional product exclusions, including Play:1, Play:3, Play:5 (Gen 2), Connect:Amp, and first-generation SYMFONISK Bookshelf and Table Lamp. Sub 4 and Sub Gen 3 also do not work with the Sonos S1 Controller app. The exact combinations and configuration exceptions are best checked on Sonos’ Sub setup and compatibility page before ordering.

If you use a legacy speaker or controller, do not assume that a Sub 4 will pair simply because both products carry the Sonos name. Sonos’ support page describes which systems can pair with two Subs in specified configurations as well; check those details if you are expanding an existing theater setup.
Sub 4 or Sub Mini?
Sub Mini is Sonos’ compact subwoofer alternative. Sonos gives examples of using it with Beam or Ray for TV, and with certain Sonos speakers for music; it is not described as a general-purpose subwoofer for non-Sonos gear. Choose between the two by checking the exact compatibility of your speakers, how much space you have, the price available where you live, and how substantial a bass upgrade you want.

There is no supported basis here for saying one will sound better in every room or with every speaker. If space is the deciding factor, compare the physical product dimensions and the placement you can actually accommodate; if sound character is decisive, look for a comparison using your particular system rather than treating specifications as a substitute for listening.

What Hi-Fi?’s January 2026 subwoofer guide describes the Sonos Sub as easy to set up and well integrated with Sonos systems, and notes versatile placement, including laying it flat when needed. The publication also calls it expensive and says its bass for music can sound a little “fat” rather than especially punchy. Those are What Hi-Fi?’s review judgments, not results of independent testing for this article. Its guide says the Sub needs a Sonos soundbar or another Sonos Wi-Fi speaker; Ethernet is available if Wi-Fi is inadequate, while the connection is otherwise wireless apart from power.
