What the Smeg SHW610X1 is
Smeg Australia describes the SHW610X1 as a decorative chimney-style wall hood in brushed stainless steel. It has four button-controlled speeds, three stainless-steel grease filters, two 2 W LED lights and a 150 mm vent outlet. Its overall dimensions are 600 mm wide, 470 mm deep and 1,030 mm high. How much extraction and noise does Smeg claim?
Smeg lists maximum free-outlet capacity of 920 m³/h, with noise levels of 52 dBA at speed 1 and 71 dBA at speed 4. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. In particular, the 920 m³/h figure is specified at the free outlet; it should not be read as airflow delivered after installation through a duct with bends, restrictions or other resistance. Nor should it be combined with the speed-1 noise figure to imply that maximum extraction is quiet.

Can it be ducted or recirculated?
Ducted installation
The manufacturer’s product sheet describes ducting to atmosphere using 150 mm ducting. This option requires a suitable route from the hood to the exterior and compatible ductwork. Check the installation instructions for the applicable market variant, including mounting clearances for the cooktop type, before buying or fitting the hood. Recirculating installation
The same product sheet also describes recirculation. In this mode, the hood needs charcoal or carbon filters, which require periodic replacement. CHOICE’s public recirculating listing says two carbon filters are required and recommends replacing them every four months; it lists an annual filter cost of AUD 237. Detailed overall expert ratings and other test results are member-only in the public result, so the visible score is not enough to establish a full performance ranking or a ducted-mode verdict. - Confirm whether your kitchen supports a ducted route or whether recirculation is the practical option.
- For ducting, check that the installation can accommodate the specified 150 mm outlet and consult the correct installation manual for mounting clearances and local requirements.
- For recirculation, confirm the correct carbon-filter part number for your exact unit before purchase, and account for CHOICE’s four-month replacement recommendation and stated annual cost.
- Check current retailer stock, price and warranty terms. The manufacturer product sheet states a two-year parts-and-labour warranty, but it is an older 2018 document that may reflect a market-specific configuration; verify the terms for the variant being sold.
- When comparing another 60 cm canopy hood, compare extraction at equivalent operating points and noise at comparable fan speeds. Also compare ducted and recirculating performance, filter replacement costs, grease-filter cleaning, installation fit, warranty and parts support. The available public information does not provide complete comparable test data for this model.
Verdict: who should consider the SHW610X1?
The SHW610X1 is worth considering if its 60 cm format, stainless-steel finish, four speeds and installation requirements suit your kitchen, and you can verify local availability and warranty. Its headline airflow and noise figures are manufacturer specifications rather than a complete independent assessment, so they are not enough on their own to prove how well it will suit a specific cooking setup. Recirculating buyers should treat filter compatibility as a purchase check, not assume either published part number applies to their hood.
