No—not without limits. The Samsung Gear S3 is IP68 water-resistant under specified conditions. Samsung says it can be submerged up to 1.5 m (about 4.9 ft) for no more than 30 minutes, but that test condition is not a blanket guarantee for every kind of water exposure or for every individual watch.
What IP68 means on the Gear S3
Samsung identifies the Gear S3 as IP68-rated. Its guidance allows ordinary exposures such as rain, showering, and washing dishes, while cautioning against submersion deeper than 1.5 m or longer than 30 minutes. Samsung also warns against strong moving water, such as a rapid current. See Samsung Singapore’s Gear S3 water- and dust-resistance guidance.

The depth and time describe specified conditions, not a promise that the watch is safe in every situation within those numbers. Water movement, exposure beyond the stated limits, and the condition of the device all matter.
Can you shower or swim with a Gear S3?
Showering and everyday splashes
Samsung lists showering, rain, and dishwashing among situations in which the Gear S3 can be worn. Follow the immersion and moving-water cautions: an IP68 label does not make the watch immune to water entry.

Swimming and aquatic activities
Do not treat the Gear S3’s IP68 rating as a swimming recommendation. Samsung explains that IP ratings address ingress under specified test conditions and do not account for the water pressure encountered during swimming and other aquatic activities. Its Gear S3-specific guidance identifies IP68, not 5 ATM. Samsung discusses 5 ATM for other wearables, including the Gear Sport and Gear Fit2 Pro; those ratings should not be transferred to the Gear S3. Read Samsung’s explanation of IP and ATM water-resistance ratings.
Why an older or damaged Gear S3 may be less water-resistant
A product rating cannot confirm the condition of an individual watch. Samsung warns that dropping or striking the device can damage its water- and dust-resistance features. This is especially relevant when assessing a used watch: Samsung does not provide a way to verify its current seal from the IP68 rating alone, nor does it publish a quantified aging or failure rate for the Gear S3. Avoid relying on water resistance if the watch has been impacted or its condition is uncertain. Samsung’s water-resistance tips for smart watches also address the effect of impact.

What to do after the Gear S3 gets wet
- After salt water or other liquids: Rinse the watch with clean water, then dry it with a clean, soft cloth. Samsung specifically mentions salt water, ionized water, and alcoholic beverages.
- Before handling it: Dry your hands and the watch.
- If call audio sounds unclear: The speaker or microphone may still be wet. Wipe the watch and let it dry thoroughly; sound can remain unclear until those areas are dry.
- While it is in water: Do not assume the touchscreen or other features will work normally. Samsung warns that they may not operate properly in water.
Samsung’s 2016 launch specifications list IP68 water and dust resistance for both the Gear S3 classic and frontier; they do not identify a different water rating for either variant. See Samsung’s Gear S3 launch announcement.
