Is the PS5 Pro Worth Buying for PSSR? What to Check Before You Upgrade

PS5 Pro is worth considering for PSSR only if the games you play support it, your display can show the improvements you care about, and the result justifies your actual upgrade cost. PSSR is not a blanket enhancement across every PS5 game. Sony says its upgraded version improves image stability and fine-detail clarity in supported titles, but results vary by game. Standard PS5 owners should also factor in Sony’s newly announced QSSR upscaling for select games.

What PSSR does on PS5 Pro

PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s AI image-upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. It analyzes game images as it upscales them, helping supported games pursue sharper output or different visual and performance balances. Sony describes the upgraded PSSR as delivering improved image stability, clearer fine details, and more consistent performance across supported titles. These are Sony’s feature descriptions, not a guarantee of the same visible result in every game. Sony’s March 16, 2026 announcement explains the update and its supported-game context.

On PS5 Pro, the system option called Enhance PSSR Image Quality can enable the upgraded version in supported games, including some originally made for earlier PSSR. Sony says to switch it off if it causes unexpected visual effects. The feature is therefore something to try in games you own, rather than a reason to assume every game will look better. Sony’s PS5 Pro page also qualifies PSSR support by title.

Check whether your games support the benefit

The most important check is your own play list, not the size of a compatibility list. Sony’s US PS5 Pro page currently names these titles as having enhanced PSSR: Resident Evil Requiem, SILENT HILL f, SILENT HILL 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Alan Wake 2, Control, Monster Hunter Wilds, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Nioh 3, Rise of the Ronin, Crimson Desert, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Cyberpunk 2077. The list can change as games and system software are updated, so check Sony’s live page before buying. See the current PS5 Pro feature and game list.

Sony reported that original PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 PS5 Pro titles as of February 27, 2026. That is Sony’s count of titles using PSSR, not an independent rating of image quality and not a count of games guaranteed to benefit equally from upgraded PSSR. Sony’s February 27 announcement gives the figure and describes the technology.

Make a short list before deciding

  1. Write down the games you play most. Compare them with Sony’s current PS5 Pro list and the game’s own graphics options.
  2. Separate support from visible value. A game supporting PSSR does not establish that its image or performance will improve enough for you to notice or care about.
  3. Check again near purchase. Support is title-dependent and the published list can move over time.

Consider QSSR on standard PS5

Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) on October 1, 2026 as a separate AI-upscaling performance tier for standard PS5. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to use it, with patches announced for that day that add it as an additional graphics option. Sony positions PSSR as the higher-end solution on PS5 Pro; the announcement does not establish that QSSR matches PSSR or that all PS5 games will support QSSR. If your reason for upgrading is specifically upscaling, first ask whether QSSR in games you play already gives you an acceptable experience. Read Sony’s QSSR announcement.

Check your display and the modes you use

Sony advertises 4K output and up to 120fps with ray tracing and PSSR for compatible games on a compatible 4K TV. This is not a universal promise that one game will deliver all of those features at once: Sony qualifies the combination by compatibility and says results vary by title. Check your display’s resolution and refresh capabilities, then check the graphics modes offered by the specific games you play. Sony’s product page lists its compatibility qualifications.

If your current display cannot show the resolution or refresh features you value, the practical case for paying extra for those particular benefits is weaker. A compatible display may make a difference, but it is a separate purchase decision; PSSR alone does not establish that you need to replace your TV.

Compare keeping your PS5 with upgrading

What to compare Keep your standard PS5 Upgrade to PS5 Pro
Games you actually play Check whether your games meet your needs now and whether announced QSSR support applies. Check Sony’s current supported list and the options in your specific games.
Image and performance Judge your current experience and any supported QSSR option in each game. Look for meaningful improvements to detail, stability, frame rate, or graphics modes in those same games; results vary by title.
Display Your existing TV or monitor may already suit your preferred modes. 4K and up to 120fps claims depend on compatible games and a compatible 4K TV.
Cost Keep the console and avoid an upgrade purchase. Compare your real net cost after any trade-in, resale, or other purchase conditions. No universal price threshold establishes when the upgrade is worthwhile.
Other hardware value Consider whether your current storage and console meet your needs. Sony lists 2TB of built-in storage; this may matter for a crowded library, but it is separate from PSSR image quality.

There is no established independent, like-for-like benchmark or fixed local-cost comparison that can turn this into a universal yes or no. The decision depends on whether the improvements in your games matter enough to justify your actual net cost.

When the Pro upgrade makes sense for PSSR

  • More persuasive: Several of your regular games support PSSR, you have a compatible display, and you value the image or performance options enough to pay your net upgrade cost.
  • Less persuasive: Few games you play support it, you are satisfied with your current PS5 image quality, or the display you own cannot show the improvements you want.
  • Wait and assess: You are mainly interested in upscaling and the standard PS5 games you play are gaining QSSR options. See how those options meet your needs before deciding that Pro is necessary.

Bottom line: Treat PSSR as a game-specific reason to upgrade, not a system-wide guarantee. Match Sony’s current support list to your own games, check the modes your screen can display, and compare the experience you want with your actual net cost. Buy the Pro for PSSR only when those checks point to benefits you will use.
