PlayStation has confirmed GTA VI for both PS5 and PS5 Pro, but it has not published the game’s Pro resolution, frame-rate targets, or graphics settings.
The PS5 Pro can still make sense for players who want its improvements across many supported games, have a suitable display and can afford the U.S. premium. Someone buying a console specifically for GTA VI can use the standard PS5, which is also a confirmed platform.

The decision in one minute
GTA VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PS5 and PS5 Pro. It is a single-player game and will not be released for PS4, according to PlayStation’s official GTA VI page accessed October 13, 2026. Both current-generation PlayStation consoles therefore meet the published platform requirement.
What has not been published is just as important. The official material available at that date does not identify a PS5 Pro-only resolution, a 60-fps mode, a graphics preset, or a measured performance difference for GTA VI. Sony’s general PS5 Pro specifications describe what the hardware can enable in supported games; they are not a GTA VI benchmark.
#1 Best Overall
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
For an existing PS5 owner, the evidence-based choice is to keep the current console unless later technical information shows a Pro advantage that is worth the cost. For a first-time buyer, compare the two consoles on your wider gaming habits, display and budget rather than assuming the Pro is required for GTA VI.
What is confirmed about GTA VI on PlayStation
Both PS5 models are supported
PlayStation states: “Grand Theft Auto VI is released for PlayStation®5 and PS5® Pro on November 19, 2026.” The same listing identifies the game as single-player and excludes PS4. No statement says that PS5 Pro is required, recommended as the only version, or the only way to access a particular story or gameplay feature.
Sony’s PlayStation Blog also says that, through its partnership with Rockstar Games, GTA VI will play best on PS5 by using PS5’s immersive features. That wording is a platform claim, not a promise of a specific frame rate or a proof that the Pro version will use a unique performance mode.

The published PS5 experience description includes DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, the controller speaker, Tempest 3D AudioTech and the PS5 SSD. These are features of the PS5 platform. The descriptions do not establish that any of them are exclusive to PS5 Pro or that the Pro will add a separate GTA VI feature set.
PS5 Pro and PS5 prices in the United States
Sony’s March 27, 2026 price announcement set the current U.S. recommended retail prices below, with the Pro price effective April 2, 2026. These are MSRPs, not guarantees of a retailer’s live price, inventory or promotional bundle.
| Product | U.S. recommended retail price | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 | Current U.S. MSRP announced by Sony; effective April 2, 2026 |
| PS5 | $649.99 | Standard U.S. PS5 MSRP listed in Sony’s April 2026 announcement |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 | Digital-only U.S. MSRP listed in the same announcement |
| GTA VI Standard Edition | $79.99 | Price announced by Take-Two on June 24, 2026; verify the current storefront price |
| GTA VI Ultimate Edition | $99.99 | Price announced by Take-Two on June 24, 2026; verify the current storefront price |
At those announced prices, the Pro costs $250 more than the disc-equipped standard PS5 and $300 more than the Digital Edition before buying the game, accessories or storage. The comparison is U.S.-specific; prices and product configurations can differ in other countries.
Illustrating the upfront totals
Using only the announced U.S. MSRPs, a Pro plus the $79.99 Standard Edition would total $979.98 before tax. A standard PS5 and that game would total $729.98, while a Digital Edition and the game would total $679.98. With the $99.99 Ultimate Edition, the corresponding totals would be $999.98, $749.98 and $699.98. These are simple reference calculations, not promises about bundles, discounts or the price displayed in your account.

It can represent several games, a controller or other accessories. For someone who already owns a working PS5, selling or trading it could change the net upgrade cost, but resale proceeds, condition and retailer terms are not fixed by Sony’s MSRP.
Do not treat MSRP as your checkout total
The announced console figures do not include sales tax, retailer discounts, bundles, an extra controller or a separately purchased disc drive. GTA VI’s announced edition prices are also not a guarantee of the amount shown in your regional store on release day. If you are deciding today, use the published MSRP as a reference point and check the actual price in your country before ordering.
What the PS5 Pro hardware upgrade actually promises
Sony’s 2024 PS5 Pro announcement compares the Pro with the PS5 model used as its baseline. It advertises 67% more GPU compute units, 28% faster memory and up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay. It also highlights more advanced ray tracing and an AI-driven upscaling system called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR.
GPU, memory and rendering
More compute units and faster memory give developers additional graphics and bandwidth headroom. Sony’s “up to 45% faster rendering” is a general hardware claim, not a result measured in GTA VI. A game must be configured to use the extra capacity, and the benefit can differ between performance modes, scenes and patches.
Ray tracing and PSSR
Advanced ray tracing can improve lighting, reflections and shadows when a game implements it. PSSR can reconstruct a higher-resolution image from a lower internal render, potentially allowing a developer to balance image quality and performance differently. Neither technology guarantees a particular output resolution, frame rate or visual preset in GTA VI. Those choices belong to Rockstar’s implementation and have not been published.
2TB storage
The PS5 Pro launch specification includes a 2TB SSD. That is useful for a large modern game library and reduces the frequency of deleting installations, but it does not indicate how large GTA VI will be or how much free space the game will require. Storage capacity alone is not evidence of better frame rate or graphics.
No built-in disc drive
The Pro ships without a disc drive. Sony says the currently available PS5 Disc Drive is sold separately. The drive may matter if you buy games on discs or use the console for physical media, but it is not automatically needed for GTA VI’s boxed edition described by Rockstar.
Why the published specifications do not answer the GTA VI question
Sony says PS5 Pro-enhanced features apply only to select games and vary by title. That caveat prevents a console-level percentage from being converted into a guaranteed GTA VI result. A developer might use the extra power for sharper image reconstruction, more detailed effects, steadier performance, longer draw distances or a choice between visual modes. The official GTA VI pages available at that date do not say which, if any, of those options will be present.

Rumours and predictions based on other games are not substitutes for Rockstar’s technical specifications or testing of the released build.
Do not buy either model on the assumption that GTA VI will have a guaranteed 60-fps mode. The available official information makes no such promise for the standard PS5 or the Pro.
What would you actually notice on your television?
A Pro advantage, if Rockstar implements one, would be most relevant to image quality and consistency rather than to the mere ability to launch the game. The visible result could depend on the game mode, viewing distance, screen size and the quality of the display’s motion handling. A player sitting farther from a smaller screen may notice less difference than someone using a large, high-quality display, but the official GTA VI material does not specify a required screen or resolution.
Do not buy a new television solely to match an unannounced GTA VI mode. Neither PlayStation’s platform listing nor Rockstar’s edition information requires 4K, 120 Hz or any other particular specification. Those features can matter for other games, but they cannot be used as proof of what GTA VI will output.

Which buyer should choose which console?
| Your situation | Evidence-led choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You already own a standard PS5 and mainly want GTA VI | Keep the PS5 for now | GTA VI is confirmed for the standard console, while no Pro-specific setting or performance figure has been published. |
| You already own a PS5 and play many supported games | Consider the Pro if the wider library justifies the premium | Sony advertises general graphics and rendering improvements, but support and results are game-specific. |
| You do not own a current-generation console | Compare the standard PS5 and Pro against your budget and display | Both are confirmed GTA VI platforms; the Pro’s higher price buys broader hardware capability, not a confirmed GTA VI mode. |
| You want a guaranteed 60-fps GTA VI experience | Wait for official settings or measured testing | No official source promises 60 fps on either PS5 model. |
| You want the boxed GTA VI edition on a Pro | Check the code region; a disc drive is not required for that edition | Rockstar says the box contains a download code rather than a game disc. |
If you already own a PS5
An upgrade makes financial sense only if the Pro’s benefits matter beyond one unconfirmed scenario. List the games you play regularly and check whether each has a Pro-enhanced mode. Sony’s wording is explicit that enhancements vary by title, so a supported-game list is more useful than assuming every game receives the same treatment.
Also consider the opportunity cost of the $250–$300 U.S. console premium. If your current PS5 already meets your needs and GTA VI is the primary reason for changing hardware, waiting preserves the option to upgrade after Rockstar publishes settings or independent testing measures the released game.
If GTA VI will be your first PS5 game
The standard PS5 is a confirmed way to play GTA VI and costs less at the announced U.S. MSRP. Choose the Pro instead when you value its 2TB SSD, advanced graphics features and potential improvements across other supported games enough to pay the premium. The decision should reflect your whole library, not an assumption that the game is Pro-only.
If you play many visually demanding games
The Pro’s case is stronger for a player who frequently buys games with official Pro enhancements and owns a display where improved detail, ray tracing or image reconstruction is visible. Even then, review each title’s documented modes. A console advertised as having more capability does not force every game to use it.

If you are focused on competitive frame rates
Do not infer a 120 Hz or 60-fps mode from the console’s specifications. Whether a game offers such a mode depends on the developer, the selected graphics settings and the final software. Until GTA VI’s options are documented, a frame-rate guarantee is unavailable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The boxed GTA VI edition and the disc-drive question
Rockstar Games Customer Support, updated August 18, 2026, says GTA VI’s physical version is a download code in a box and does not contain a disc. Code redemption is subject to regional platform-account restrictions, so match the code’s region to the account you will use before purchase.
Because that edition is redeemed digitally, you do not need the separately sold PS5 Disc Drive to install it on a PS5 Pro. The drive remains relevant for other disc-based games, used-game purchases, lending or collecting physical media. Do not confuse a download-code box with a disc license: the code’s regional terms still apply, and the game is downloaded to the console.
A practical buying checklist
- Confirm your platform need. GTA VI is scheduled for PS5 and PS5 Pro on November 19, 2026, and is not planned for PS4.
- Set your regional budget. Use the U.S. figures of $899.99 for Pro, $649.99 for PS5 and $599.99 for Digital Edition only as a reference; check your local price and taxes.
- Decide whether you need discs. The Pro has no included disc drive, while Rockstar’s boxed GTA VI edition is a download code. A separate drive is relevant to other disc purchases.
- Audit your game library. Identify the titles you play most and verify which ones have documented Pro enhancements. Do not assume a universal boost.
- Evaluate your display and priorities. A larger or higher-quality display may make image-quality changes easier to notice, but no particular 4K or 120 Hz specification is required by the published GTA VI information.
- Separate confirmed facts from expectations. Treat Sony’s percentages as general hardware claims, not GTA VI performance results.
- Choose your timing. If GTA VI is the only reason to upgrade, wait for Rockstar’s official graphics information or independent launch testing before committing the premium.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing platform support with optimization details. Listing PS5 Pro as a platform confirms compatibility, not a special frame-rate target.
- Turning “up to” into a guarantee. Sony’s 45% rendering statement describes a maximum general claim under its comparison, not every game or scene.
- Assuming PSSR equals native 4K. PSSR is an upscaling technology; the internal render and final output for GTA VI have not been stated.
- Buying a disc drive for the boxed code. Rockstar’s box contains a download code. Buy the drive only if you need it for other physical software or media.
- Ignoring region rules. Check that a boxed code can be redeemed by the PlayStation account’s region before opening it.
- Using a retailer bundle as a permanent price. Sony’s MSRP and a temporary promotion are different reference points.
What information would justify a Pro upgrade later?
Look for a published comparison that identifies the actual GTA VI modes on both consoles. Useful details would include internal and output resolution, frame-rate targets and measurements, ray-tracing use, image-quality settings, visual differences, loading behaviour and whether features require a particular display.
Independent testing should identify the released game version, console model, patch level and test conditions. A general demonstration of PSSR or ray tracing in another title cannot establish what GTA VI does. Likewise, a retailer bundle or a temporary price should not be treated as the permanent U.S. MSRP.
Until that information exists, the safest conclusion is conditional: buy the Pro for its broader, documented platform capabilities if those capabilities fit your gaming habits and budget; do not buy it merely to secure an unannounced GTA VI frame rate or graphics mode.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the PS5 Pro worth buying for GTA 6 if I already own a PS5?
Not solely for GTA VI. The game is confirmed for standard PS5, and no official Pro-specific resolution, frame-rate target or graphics mode has been announced. Upgrade only if the Pro’s broader benefits across supported games justify the premium.
Will GTA 6 run at 60 fps on PS5 Pro?
There is no official 60-fps promise for either PS5 model. Wait for Rockstar’s settings or independent testing of the released game.
Is GTA VI exclusive to PS5 Pro?
No. PlayStation lists both PS5 and PS5 Pro for the November 19, 2026 release and does not list PS4.
How much more expensive is PS5 Pro than PS5 in the United States?
Sony’s announced U.S. MSRPs are $899.99 for PS5 Pro, $649.99 for PS5 and $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition. That makes the Pro $250 above the standard PS5 or $300 above the Digital Edition before tax and accessories.
Do I need a disc drive for the physical GTA 6 edition?
No. Rockstar says the boxed physical version contains a download code, not a disc. A separately sold drive is still useful for other disc games or physical media, and the code must match your account region.
What does PS5 Pro add in general?
Sony’s 2024 comparison cites 67% more GPU compute units, 28% faster memory and up to 45% faster rendering, plus advanced ray tracing and PSSR. These are general capabilities and do not specify GTA VI’s performance.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: GTA VI is confirmed for both PS5 and PS5 Pro on November 19, 2026. For an existing PS5 owner, the $899.99 U.S. Pro is not justified by an unannounced 60-fps or graphics promise. Keep your PS5 or wait for verified game-specific settings. Buy the Pro now only if its 2TB storage and supported-game enhancements are valuable across your library, display and budget.
