Sometimes—but not because Portal unlocks Remote Play that your phone or tablet cannot. A compatible mobile device can already stream games from your PS5 through the PS Remote Play app. PlayStation Portal’s value is its dedicated handheld design, integrated PlayStation controls and quick, television-free access. It becomes more compelling if you regularly give up the TV, want a device that is always ready for PS5 streaming, or qualify for Portal’s cloud-streaming feature. If you play remotely only occasionally and already have a practical controller setup, your phone or tablet may be the better value.
The right choice depends on four things: how often you will use a dedicated handheld, whether you need cloud streaming, what controller hardware you already own and how reliable your network is.

What you are actually comparing
There are two different ways to play away from the television. The first is the PS Remote Play app on a compatible phone or tablet, optionally paired with a supported controller or used with on-screen controls. The app streams your PS5 over a network.
Recommended Free Tools
The second is PlayStation Portal, a purpose-built remote player with PlayStation controls integrated into the handheld. In ordinary Remote Play mode, Portal is still streaming your PS5; it is not a portable PS5 and does not run console games locally. Both options therefore depend on network quality.
#1 Best Overall
- Put Your PS5 in the Palm of Your Hand - PlayStation Portal Remote Player gives you access to the games on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi*, letting you jump right into gaming without needing to play on a TV.
- Play Your Game Collection - PlayStation Portal Remote Player can play compatible games you have installed on your PS5 console, including your favorite games for PS5 and PS4.**
- Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player
- Charging Cable Pass-through – Allows a charging cable to be plugged into the PS Portal while stored inside the case
- Charge and Display – Charge the PlayStation Portal remote player and display it next to your PlayStation5 console
Portal adds a separate cloud-streaming route for selected PS5 games. That route can work when your PS5 is switched off or being used for something else, but it has additional membership, account, location, connection and game-eligibility requirements.
When Portal is worth the extra device
You regularly lose access to the television
If another person often uses the TV, Portal gives you a dedicated way to continue playing from another room without moving the console. The phone/tablet route can solve the same problem, but only if the device, controller and app are already convenient to pick up. Portal’s advantage is readiness: the screen and controls are one purpose-built unit rather than several pieces that must be found, attached or configured.
You want handheld controls without improvising
A phone or tablet can provide the display, but touch controls are not suitable for every game and a separate controller adds bulk. Portal puts the controls on the device itself. That does not prove better comfort or lower latency for every player; those are personal and network-dependent. It does mean fewer setup decisions each time you want to connect.
You will use cloud streaming
Portal cloud streaming can broaden the use case beyond a PS5 that is available for Remote Play. Eligible PS5 games can stream directly to Portal while the console is off or in use. This is a meaningful reason to buy Portal only if you meet the Premium, account, regional, broadband and title requirements described below.
When your phone or tablet is the better choice
You play remotely only occasionally
If television conflicts are rare, installing the PS Remote Play app may be enough. Your existing phone or tablet already supplies the screen, and you avoid purchasing another device. The trade-off is that you must use a compatible control method and accept the ergonomics of your current setup.
You already own a suitable controller
The mobile route becomes more attractive when you have a supported controller that works with your phone or tablet. Check compatibility for the exact device and operating-system version before relying on it. If you would need to buy a controller solely for occasional Remote Play, compare that marginal cost with Portal’s current local price rather than assuming either option is automatically cheaper.
You do not need Portal cloud streaming
Cloud streaming is a Portal-specific reason to consider the dedicated device in this comparison. If your plan is simply to mirror games from your own PS5, the phone/tablet app provides the same basic category of access, subject to compatibility and network conditions.

PlayStation describes Remote Play as streaming from a console to supported phones, tablets, computers and other devices. Its product information describes Portal as a dedicated device for playing on home Wi-Fi without a TV.
How Remote Play works on a phone, tablet or Portal
Remote Play sends video and audio from the PS5 to the receiving device and sends your control input back to the console. Because the game is running on your PS5, the console must be configured and connected. Portal does not remove this requirement in Remote Play mode.

To start from rest mode, the PS5 must remain connected to the internet and allow network wake. If those settings are missing, a sleeping console may not respond when you try to connect.
Set up PS5 Remote Play correctly
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and enable Remote Play.
- Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Enable the option to stay connected to the internet.
- In the same rest-mode settings, enable the option that allows turning on the PS5 from the network.
- Sign in to Portal or the PS Remote Play app with the same PlayStation account used on the PS5.
- Keep the PS5 connected and start Remote Play from the receiving device.
If the connection fails, first verify that Remote Play is enabled, the account matches on both devices and the PS5 is either awake or configured for network wake in rest mode. A phone/tablet setup and Portal share these console prerequisites.

Portal cloud streaming: what it adds and what it does not
Cloud streaming is not unrestricted access to every PlayStation game. PlayStation’s support requirements specify Portal, a PlayStation account, an active PlayStation Plus Premium membership, broadband, an adult account and availability in a supported country or region. The catalog and supported territories can change.
Only selected PS5 games are eligible. Some catalog and library games cannot be streamed, and PlayStation’s support page states that PS4 and PS3 games cannot be played through Portal cloud streaming. Check a title’s eligibility rather than assuming that ownership or catalog inclusion guarantees access.
Cloud streaming is useful when your PS5 is off or another person is using it, because the game session is delivered from the cloud instead of your console. It still depends on your internet connection, and Sony describes its speed figures as minimum requirements rather than a promise of smooth play in every home.
Cloud-streaming speed requirements
| Use case | Minimum upload and download speed listed by PlayStation | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Establishing a cloud-streaming session | 5 Mbps | Minimum to start a session |
| 720p cloud streaming | 7 Mbps | Minimum listed for 720p |
| 1080p cloud streaming | 13 Mbps | Minimum listed for 1080p |
These are official minimum upload and download requirements from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s support information. They are not latency tests, quality guarantees or measurements of Portal’s performance. Actual results vary with the game and network conditions, including congestion and wireless reliability.

Cost: compare the extra purchase, not an imaginary free alternative
A phone or tablet you already own may appear free, but the complete alternative can include a compatible controller, a mount or other accessories. Portal’s current local price, discounts and stock vary by market and are not established here, so check the price in your country at the time you decide.
Use this calculation:
- Portal route: current local Portal price, plus any PlayStation Plus Premium cost if cloud streaming is part of your plan.
- Mobile route: the cost of any controller or accessory you would actually need, plus any subscription you would purchase for reasons unrelated to Remote Play.
- Usage value: how many hours each month you expect to play away from the TV and how much setup friction the dedicated device removes.
Do not treat Premium as a mandatory Remote Play fee. It is a requirement for Portal cloud streaming; ordinary Remote Play from your PS5 is a separate use case.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Network conditions should decide more than the screen
Both routes are streaming solutions. Portal works over Wi-Fi in Remote Play mode, while the phone/tablet app also depends on a network path between the app and your PS5. Cloud streaming adds a separate internet path to Sony’s servers. A dedicated device cannot eliminate interruptions caused by weak Wi-Fi, congestion or an unavailable console.

Consider where you will play. A device used in the same home as the PS5 may have a different experience from one used on another network. Test the PS Remote Play app in the rooms and at the times you actually play before buying Portal if you are uncertain about your connection.

Portal’s integrated controls remove the need to balance a phone or tablet and a separate controller. That is a form-factor observation, not a measured claim that Portal is more comfortable for everyone. Hand size, posture, game genre and session length matter.
A tablet gives you a larger existing screen, while a phone is easier to carry. Portal gives you a purpose-built handheld layout. None of these facts establishes superior battery life, latency, display quality or long-session comfort; those characteristics require device-specific testing and can change with software and network conditions.
Software updates and what to verify before buying
Portal’s feature set has expanded through software updates. The official update history retrieved for this guide lists version 7.0.2 and identifies a 1080p High Quality mode and cloud-streaming enhancements among the feature history. Check the latest update listing before purchase because the version and available features may change.
Updates do not alter the fundamental distinction: Remote Play still streams from your configured PS5, while cloud streaming remains limited by Premium membership, supported regions, account age, broadband and game eligibility.

Buy Portal if most of these describe you
- You frequently want to play while someone else occupies the TV.
- You value an always-ready handheld more than using a device you already own.
- You prefer integrated PlayStation controls over touch controls or a separate controller.
- You have tested reliable Wi-Fi where you will play.
- You specifically want cloud streaming and meet its Premium, adult-account, regional, speed and title requirements.
Keep using your phone or tablet if most of these describe you
- Remote Play is an occasional convenience rather than a regular habit.
- You already own a compatible controller and are satisfied with the setup.
- You normally have access to the TV when you want to play.
- You do not need cloud streaming when the PS5 is off or occupied.
- Your network is inconsistent enough that a dedicated purchase would not solve the underlying problem.
Wait and test before deciding
- You have not tried the Remote Play app in the location where you plan to use Portal.
- You are unsure whether your account is an adult account or whether your country supports cloud streaming.
- The games you care about may not be eligible for cloud streaming.
- You need a current price, discount or stock check to make the value calculation.
Common misconceptions
“Portal is a portable PS5”
It is a remote player. In Remote Play mode, the PS5 runs the game and Portal receives the stream. It does not replace the console.
“Owning a phone makes Portal pointless”
Not necessarily. The phone covers basic Remote Play access; Portal can still be worthwhile for the dedicated controls, lower setup friction and optional cloud streaming.
“Cloud streaming means every game is available”
No. Eligibility is limited to selected PS5 titles, and PlayStation states that PS4 and PS3 games cannot be played through Portal cloud streaming. Catalog and regional availability can change.
“The listed Mbps figure guarantees smooth play”
No. The 5 Mbps, 7 Mbps and 13 Mbps figures are minimum requirements for starting a session and for the listed resolutions. Sony says performance varies with the game and network conditions.
Bottom line
Buy PS Portal if you are a regular PS5 player who will genuinely use a dedicated handheld, especially during TV conflicts, and if your network is dependable. Add cloud streaming to the justification only after confirming Premium membership, adult-account eligibility, supported region, broadband requirements and the games you want to play. If your phone or tablet already works well with a compatible controller and you play remotely only now and then, Portal mainly buys convenience rather than new basic capability, so keeping the mobile setup is the more rational choice.
