Is the Pokémon Legends: Z-A Switch 2 Upgrade Worth It if You Own the Switch Version?

For most existing owners, the Switch 2 upgrade is worth considering if you notice the original version’s frame pacing or want a sharper image—especially when playing docked. It is a technical upgrade, not a content expansion: Nintendo Life’s comparison found no exclusive gameplay content, and the U.S. upgrade-pack listing observed was $9.99. If you are happy with how your Switch copy looks and runs, there is no new story or mode identified here that makes upgrading essential.

What the Switch 2 Edition changes

Nintendo describes the edition as offering improved performance, enhanced resolution, and smoother frame rates, but does not publish a specific frame-rate target on its U.S. product page.

Nintendo Life’s November 3, 2025 comparison reports its own observations: the original Switch version ran mostly at 30 frames per second in docked and handheld play, with occasional drops; the Switch 2 version ran at a consistent 60 fps with minimal drops. It observed 1080p docked and 720p handheld on Switch, compared with upscaled 2160p docked and 1080p handheld on Switch 2. It also noted improved textures, color, shading, and shadows, faster loading, and reduced—but still present—pop-in. These are review observations, not official targets or guarantees for every scene or software version.

In its October 17, 2025 review of the European Switch version, Nintendo Life found performance relatively consistent around 30 fps but observed repeated stutter during certain docked camera cuts, as well as more noticeable pop-in and slowly loading textures. Those are reviewer findings, not a universal result for every player or region. The comparison and review are available from Nintendo Life.

Who is most likely to find the upgrade worthwhile?

What matters to you How that points to the upgrade
Smoother motion in real-time battles More compelling. Nintendo Life observed roughly 60 fps on Switch 2 versus mostly 30 fps on Switch.
Playing docked on a large screen More compelling if you notice image softness, pop-in, or camera-cut stutter. The comparison reported higher output resolution and visual improvements on Switch 2.
Mostly handheld play Potentially worthwhile if you want the reported resolution and frame-rate improvements, though the visual benefit may matter less to you on a smaller screen.
You are satisfied with the current image and performance Harder to justify: the cited comparison does not identify exclusive gameplay content to unlock.
You expect a new story, mode, or other gameplay content Do not buy on that expectation. Nintendo Life describes the differences as technical rather than content-based.

The decision is about how much the smoother motion and clearer presentation matter to you, weighed against your local upgrade price. If you already find Lumiose City’s performance and image quality acceptable, keeping your existing version is a reasonable choice.

How much does the upgrade pack cost?

A U.S. Best Buy listing displayed the upgrade pack at $9.99 when checked in 2026. Nintendo Life listed $9.99 in the U.S. and £7.99 in the U.K. in its November 2025 comparison. Prices and availability can change, so check your local eShop or retailer before buying. The Best Buy listing is a market-specific retailer price, not a universal price.

How to upgrade a physical or digital Switch copy

  1. Use a Nintendo Switch 2. The enhanced performance and presentation are available only on that console.
  2. Buy the upgrade pack through Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store, or a participating retailer. Nintendo Support says owners of either a physical or digital Switch game can upgrade; follow the purchase and redemption instructions for the store or retailer you choose.
  3. Launch the game on Switch 2 to access the edition’s enhancements. Your original game remains playable on the original Switch, but the Switch 2 Edition features do not carry over to that console.

For eligibility and platform details, consult Nintendo Support’s upgrade-pack information.

What the upgrade does not include

The Switch 2 Edition is not presented as a new-content edition. Nintendo Life’s comparison reports no gameplay features or content exclusive to one version, so the reason to pay is improved technical presentation, not access to an additional story or mode.

The Pokémon Company also lists a separate Japanese all-in-one Switch 2 package with the Mega Dimension add-on, scheduled for October 29, 2026, at ¥11,128. That is a full-game-plus-DLC package, not the upgrade pack, and is not required for the Switch 2 performance enhancements. It is relevant to a new full-game purchase, not to upgrading an existing copy.
