It can be—but mainly if you want a dedicated handheld, not simply a way to play your PS5 remotely. If you already own a compatible phone or tablet, Sony’s PS Remote Play app can use it to connect to your console. Portal’s case is its built-in screen and controls, plus a separate cloud-streaming option for eligible games. Whether that is worth another device depends on how often you play, your network, and whether you meet the cloud-streaming requirements.
What Portal adds over a phone or tablet
PlayStation Portal Remote Player is a dedicated device for streaming compatible games installed on a PS5. It is not a standalone console or a general-purpose tablet: for console Remote Play, it connects to your PS5 and plays games installed there. Sony’s PS Remote Play overview describes the device and its network requirements.

A phone or tablet you already own can also run Sony’s PS Remote Play app. Sony lists Android phones and tablets, iPhone, and iPad among the supported device categories; you need a PlayStation account and high-speed internet. See Sony’s mobile Remote Play setup guidance for details.

Remote Play and cloud streaming are different
Remote Play uses your PS5
With Remote Play, the game runs from your paired PS5. The console must be online, set up for Remote Play, and either powered on or configured for Rest Mode. Portal supports PS5 Remote Play, but Sony says it is not compatible with PS4; the PS Remote Play app on mobile devices supports both PS5 and PS4. Sony’s Portal compatibility page covers the console limitation.
PlayStation Plus is not required just to use Portal for Remote Play. A particular online multiplayer game may have its own membership requirement, which is separate from connecting remotely to your console.
Cloud streaming can work without your PS5 for that session
Portal cloud streaming is a separate feature. With an active PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, it can stream a selection of PS5 games without using your own PS5 for that session. Sony says the eligible selection includes games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, plus select digital games in your library; eligible titles and regional availability can change. See Sony’s cloud-streaming requirements and cloud-streaming game information.

Cloud streaming requires an eligible adult PlayStation account, active Premium membership, broadband, and availability in a supported country or region. Child accounts are not supported. Owning a digital PS5 game does not by itself guarantee that it can be streamed.
In a November 5, 2025 PlayStation Blog announcement, PlayStation product management described the benefit as being able to keep playing when the PS5 at home is powered off or in use by another account. That flexibility matters if it fits your routine; it does not turn Portal into an all-purpose handheld or make every game available to stream. Read the PlayStation Blog announcement.
Check your network before choosing either setup
Sony’s product guidance says Portal use requires at least 5 Mbps and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. For Portal cloud streaming, Sony lists 5 Mbps to establish a session, 7 Mbps minimum for 720p, and 13 Mbps minimum for 1080p. These are Sony-published connection requirements, not independent measurements of image quality, responsiveness, or an advantage over a phone.

Both Remote Play and cloud streaming depend on network conditions. A fast connection alone does not guarantee a smooth session: stability, congestion, latency, and public Wi-Fi login portals can also matter. Sony notes that the Portal experience varies with the network environment. If you plan to play away from home, consider whether the available Wi-Fi is reliable rather than assuming a hotel or café connection will be suitable.

Which setup fits your situation?
| Choose | It is the better fit when | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Portal | You want a dedicated handheld with integrated controls for PS5 Remote Play, or you expect to use eligible cloud streaming and meet its requirements. | Console Remote Play needs a PS5; cloud streaming needs Premium, an eligible adult account, supported-region availability, and an eligible game. |
| Your phone or tablet | You already have a compatible device and prefer to avoid buying another screen for Remote Play. | You may need a compatible controller or mount, and the mobile app’s device and controller support should suit your setup. |
Portal is easier to justify if
- You regularly want to play away from the TV and value having controls and screen together in a dedicated device.
- You want Portal cloud streaming enough to pay for and maintain PlayStation Plus Premium, and the games you want are eligible in your region.
- Your home or travel Wi-Fi is dependable enough for streaming.
Using your phone or tablet makes more sense if
- You only play remotely occasionally and would rather use a device you already own.
- You have, or are willing to get, a controller that works with your mobile device and the games you play.
- You do not need Portal’s dedicated form factor or its cloud-streaming option.
Compatibility and audio details to check
Portal is for PS5 Remote Play, not PS4 Remote Play. Sony’s mobile Remote Play app, by contrast, supports PS5 and PS4. That distinction can decide the question for you if the console you want to reach is a PS4.
Sony lists wired headsets or earbuds with a 3.5 mm plug and PlayStation Link wireless audio devices as compatible with Portal. Mobile audio and controller options depend on the phone or tablet, its operating system, and the accessories you use. Check Sony’s compatibility guidance before buying an accessory.
How to decide before spending
- Identify your use case. If you want to control your own PS5 remotely, compare Portal with the phone or tablet you already own. If you want to play while your PS5 is unavailable, check whether Portal cloud streaming offers the specific eligible games you want.
- Price the complete mobile setup. Count only any controller or mount you would actually need to add; do not treat the phone or tablet’s past purchase price as a new cost.
- Check requirements. Confirm PS5 versus PS4 compatibility, your mobile device and controller support, and—if cloud streaming is important—Premium membership, account eligibility, region, and game availability.
- Think about your connections. Compare the Wi-Fi you will actually use with Sony’s published requirements, and account for stability and public-network restrictions.
- Choose based on convenience, not an assumed performance win. The available Sony guidance sets connection requirements but does not establish that Portal is faster, sharper, or more responsive than a particular phone or tablet.
Sony’s Portal system software page listed version 7.0.2 when checked in 2026 and documents earlier additions including a 1080p High Quality mode and cloud-streaming improvements. Software features can change; consult Sony’s Portal system software information for the current version and feature notes.
