It may be worth $550 if you want a compact, ice-free cooler and can accept its limited capacity and extra cost for packs. In a summer review, Men’s Health reviewer Mike Richard reported more than 48 hours below 40°F for food and more than three days at beverage-safe temperatures. Those were his results after pre-chilling and filling the cooler, in daytime temperatures in the 70s and nights in the 50s—not a guaranteed runtime for every trip.
What you get for $550
Oyster lists the Tempo Pro at $550 on its product page, accessed October 7, 2026. Its main distinction from the original Tempo is an integrated temperature monitor. The listed package includes the cooler, a carry strap and a cotton canvas tote; Oyster sells its ice packs and aluminum carry handle separately.

The Pro is a passive cooler, not a powered refrigerator. “Ice-free” means you can use frozen thermal packs instead of loose ice cubes and the meltwater they leave behind. Oyster says some day trips may work without packs, depending on weather, how much chilled food is loaded and how long the cooler needs to stay cold. Its FAQ describes the packs as a way to extend cooling, not a requirement for every outing.

Size, capacity and monitor
Oyster lists capacity at 23 liters (24 US quarts), enough for 36 standard 355 ml cans plus two packs. The exterior dimensions are 20.1 × 11.8 × 12.6 inches, and the empty cooler weighs 12.3 pounds (5.6 kg). The monitor displays the interior temperature in Fahrenheit or Celsius, detaches from the cooler, is rated IPX5 water-resistant and is specified to run for two years; it automatically sleeps after 24 hours.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Those capacity figures include a load of cans and packs, not a promise that every combination of food and containers will fit. For a family-sized weekend or a larger group, compare the usable space with what you actually plan to carry.
What the summer test found—and what it cannot promise
In his August 27, 2026 review for Men’s Health, Mike Richard says he used the Tempo Pro while camping and at the beach. After pre-chilling the contents and filling the cooler, he reports more than 48 hours below 40°F, the food-storage threshold he used; temperatures then began to rise above it. He reports beverage-safe temperatures for more than three full days. His test took place with daytime temperatures in the 70s and nighttime temperatures in the 50s, and he notes that results vary.

That is useful evidence that the cooler can cover a multi-day outing under those conditions, but it is one reviewer’s account, not a controlled test or a product guarantee. Starting temperature, load, pack configuration, weather and how often the lid is opened all affect performance.

There is also a separate test of the original Tempo, not the Pro. In a February 17, 2026 REI Expert Advice review, Courtney Holden reports that a full load of 36 cans with two packs remained cold to the touch for three days. She also describes a separate twelve-hour test without packs in which refrigerated contents were still cold to the touch. These observations support the design’s potential, but they do not establish a direct performance comparison with Richard’s Pro test: the setup and conditions were not standardized across the accounts.

How to get the most from it
Oyster says the Tempo’s aluminum internal shell and relatively low mass reduce the energy spent cooling the cooler itself, so it does not consider pre-cooling the shell necessary. It recommends pre-chilling food and drinks when possible. Its setup guidance also points to shade, keeping the lid closed between uses and placing temperature-sensitive items low in the cooler. The amount of chilled contents and the difference between outside and inside temperatures are among the factors Oyster identifies as affecting storage time.
- Freeze the packs ahead of the trip. Oyster specifies each pack as 20.5 × 20.5 × 2.4 cm and about 830 g, with approximately 650 ml of active ingredients.
- Load cold contents when possible. The reviewer’s reported Pro result followed pre-chilling and filling the cooler; warm contents can reduce the time available for keeping food cold.
- Keep it shaded and limit lid openings. Place temperature-sensitive items low, and avoid leaving the lid open while deciding what to take out.
- Use the monitor to check conditions. It displays interior temperature; it does not cool the contents or certify that food is safe. Follow food-safety guidance for your particular food and trip.
Oyster says the packs melt at −2°C (28.4°F) and are intended to keep the perceived storage temperature roughly between 2–4°C (35.6–39°F) during use. These are manufacturer specifications and claims, not independent food-safety certification. Richard’s reported pair price was $60 when his review was published; that is a historical price, so check Oyster’s current listing before budgeting.

Where the value case breaks down
- High upfront cost: $550 buys the cooler with a strap and tote, but not the separately sold packs or handle. The total setup cost is therefore higher if you need those accessories.
- Limited room: 23 liters is compact by design. REI’s review of the original Tempo considered the capacity suitable for a family of three on a weekend trip and advised looking at larger coolers for bigger groups or longer trips.
- Visible damage is a concern: REI’s reviewer reported visible dings on the aluminum after a month. Aluminum can show dents more readily than thick plastic, so it is a less reassuring choice for rough handling.
- No bear resistance: REI identifies the original Tempo as not bear-resistant. Do not treat it as wildlife-safe storage where bear-resistant food storage is required.
- No drain spout: REI also notes this limitation on the original model. Avoiding loose ice reduces meltwater, but any liquid from food or packs still has to be managed when emptying and cleaning it.
Richard’s verdict is deliberately conditional: he calls it a “buy once, cry once” product in his opinion, while saying it makes the most sense when gear space is tight and the budget is flexible. The compact format and lack of loose ice can be valuable, but they do not erase the price, capacity and durability trade-offs.
Which alternative fits a different need?
The products below are not like-for-like performance comparisons. Men’s Health names them as alternatives for different priorities; the cited review does not establish a controlled head-to-head test.

| Option | Why it may suit you better | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Coleman Snap ‘N Go 55-Quart Collapsible Cooler | Consider it if lower-cost portability and a collapsible design matter more than a compact hard-sided shell. | It is a collapsible cooler, not an equivalent ice-free hard-sided setup. |
| RTIC 52 Quart Ultra-Light Wheeled Hard Cooler | Consider it if you need substantially more capacity and wheels. | It is larger and wheeled, rather than the Tempo Pro’s compact format. |
| BougeRV CRH 21QT 12V Portable Fridge | Consider it if powered cooling in a vehicle is the priority. | It is a powered portable fridge, not a passive cooler using frozen packs. |
Who should buy the Tempo Pro?
Choose it if you value a compact hard-sided cooler, want to avoid loose ice and meltwater, and can justify spending more for a temperature display and reusable packs. Richard’s summer results make a multi-day use case plausible under moderate conditions, provided you start with chilled contents and manage the cooler carefully.
Look elsewhere if you need enough room for a large crew, expect rough treatment, need bear-resistant storage or want powered refrigeration. The Tempo Pro’s case is strongest when portability and the ice-free format solve a real problem—not simply because it can hold cold temperatures for several days in one reviewer’s test.
