The Optoma GT2400HDR makes the most sense as a budget way to play golf indoors, not as an all-purpose home-theater projector. In WIRED’s 2026 review, John Brandon got a large, bright golf-game image from a laptop-based setup, but found color and contrast unimpressive in movies, TV, and other games. His result is a firsthand assessment of one setup, not a head-to-head test of golf projectors.
What the GT2400HDR did well for indoor golf
Brandon used the short-throw GT2400HDR with a gaming laptop, a controller he already owned, and EA Sports PGA Tour, which he accessed through his PC Game Pass Ultimate account. He targeted a 100-inch image. The large, bright picture made the game’s players appear life-size, and he found its greens and blues suited to golf imagery.

He connected the laptop by HDMI and routed sound through an AV receiver. He reports that this particular arrangement took less than 30 minutes to set up; that is his experience, not a guaranteed setup time. He did not build a full simulator enclosure or swing real clubs, so the review does not establish how the projector performs in a complete golf-bay installation or under real-club use.
WIRED’s 2026 review lists Full HD 1080p resolution (1920 × 1080), a stated image range of 30 to 300 inches, 4,200 lumens, and 8.4 ms input latency at 120 Hz. These are product claims reported by the review, not independent measurements of every figure. The review also describes a 30,000-hour laser light-source rating and IP6X dust resistance; consult current manufacturer documentation before treating those as definitive specifications.

What a budget golf setup requires—and what it leaves out
The attraction of Brandon’s approach is that it reused a laptop and controller rather than starting with a full simulator installation. He skipped a golf backdrop and clubs, so the setup was a way to play a golf game on a large screen, not a system for measuring or analyzing a real swing.
The review also describes alternatives: a midrange computer may run a golf game, or a golf simulator app on an iPad may be displayed using AirPlay-compatible equipment or HDMI through an adapter. Brandon names SkyTrak as an example of a golf simulator system for PC or tablets when actual swing analysis is wanted. These are options mentioned in the review, not universal compatibility guarantees; a complete setup with a backdrop and other equipment can cost more.

Room placement matters, especially if you will swing a club
In Brandon’s setup, the projector was about four feet from the screen for a 100-inch image. That distance is specific to his room and arrangement: the right placement depends on the image size you want and your room geometry. Short-throw placement can keep a projector nearer the screen, but you still need to ensure it will not sit in a golfer’s swing path.
Brandon could place his unit on the floor because he was not swinging real clubs. If you plan to hit balls, map out the swing area and projector position before settling on a screen location. The review does not test the projector in a real-club setup, so it cannot confirm that a particular room layout will be safe or practical.

Why it is less convincing for movies, TV, and other games
Outside golf imagery, Brandon found the picture often dull. He reports muted or grayish skin tones, limited tonal range and contrast, and a foggy-looking landscape; in a scene with grass, he saw brownish colors. In films, dark reds and shadow details looked weak, and some colors appeared washed out. He also described dull color in several other games and a news broadcast.
Bright, well-lit content looked better in his viewing, and changing picture modes helped some scenes. That does not remove the central trade-off: his favorable impression of golf imagery did not carry over to varied entertainment. Viewers’ results can differ with content and room conditions, but this review does not support buying the GT2400HDR primarily for rich movie color or contrast.

Inputs, streaming, and other practical limits
The GT2400HDR has two HDMI ports, but Brandon says it does not support HDMI 2.1/eARC. He also reports minor audio glitches when using an Onkyo AV receiver. Other listed connections include VGA, 3.5 mm audio input and output, and a 3D sync port; he did not test the 3D port. The included remote struck him as confusing, though he found it adequate for initial keystone setup.

How to decide whether it fits your use
- Choose around the main use: Brandon’s positive verdict applies to a budget indoor golf-game setup. His entertainment viewing was much less favorable.
- Check room geometry: Short throw can place the projector closer to the screen, but image size and placement still depend on the room. Leave clearance for any real swing.
- Weigh picture priorities: Brightness affects how an image holds up with ambient light; resolution, color, and contrast shape detail and richness in general entertainment.
- Consider responsiveness: Latency matters for interactive games. WIRED reports 8.4 ms at 120 Hz for this model.
- Plan connections and total setup cost: An external source is needed for streaming, and swing analysis or a complete simulator installation involves additional equipment beyond the projector and laptop arrangement Brandon used.
For context, ProjectorCentral’s separate 2026 review of the ViewSonic LSD400HD-ST reports 4,052 ANSI lumens measured in Brightest mode and 16.3 ms in 3XFast Input mode; that projector also has a 0.5:1 throw ratio, Golf mode, and a low-latency mode. This is not a head-to-head test against the GT2400HDR, and the different review figures and conditions do not establish which projector is better overall.
What the review’s verdict means
Brandon summarized his experience this way: “At the end of the day, everything I tested and benchmarked on the Optoma GT2400HDR (6/10 WIRED rating) looked just OK, but I liked how well this projector works as a golf simulator.” The rating and conclusion belong to his WIRED review and his particular setup. Read them as a use-case judgment: promising for a relatively simple indoor golf experience, but a compromise if the same projector must also deliver satisfying movies, TV, and varied games.
