For most buyers, the standard disc-equipped PS5 is the sensible purchase. It plays current PS5 games, PS4 and PS5 discs, and digital downloads while costing substantially less than PS5 Pro at Sony’s current US recommended prices. Choose the PS5 Digital Edition only if your library and future purchases are entirely digital. Choose PS5 Pro when you have a 4K display, play games with PS5 Pro enhancements, and are willing to pay for improved image quality and frame-rate options that vary by title.
The short answer: which PlayStation should you buy?
Sony currently sells three main PS5 configurations in the United States: a 1TB PS5 with a disc drive, an 825GB PS5 Digital Edition without a drive, and a 2TB PS5 Pro sold as a digital-only console. The right choice depends less on the name on the box than on your game library, display, and tolerance for paying for features that only selected games use.

- Buy the standard PS5 if you own discs, buy used games, borrow games, want Blu-ray playback, or simply want the broadest flexibility at a lower price than Pro.
- Buy the Digital Edition if every game you play is downloaded or streamed from your PlayStation account and the lower entry price matters more than a disc drive.
- Buy PS5 Pro if your favorite games carry a PS5 Pro enhancement label, you can see the difference on your 4K display, and the premium is acceptable.
PS5 Pro is not a universal replacement for the standard model. Sony explicitly says Pro features are available only in selected games and vary by game. The recommendation therefore starts with the titles you actually play, not with a promise that every PS5 game will look or run better.
Current US prices and what each model includes
Sony’s recommended retail prices below took effect on April 2, 2026. They are a dated US baseline, not a guarantee of what a retailer charges today. Sales, inventory, tax, bundles, and prices in other countries can change the amount you pay.
#1 Best Overall
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
| Model | Listed storage | Disc drive | Sony US recommended price | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | 1TB advertised capacity | Included | $649.99 | Physical-game buyers, disc libraries, Blu-ray playback, and mixed digital/physical households |
| PS5 Digital Edition | 825GB advertised capacity | Not included | $599.99 | People committed to downloads and PlayStation Store purchases |
| PS5 Pro | 2TB advertised capacity | Not included; compatible drive sold separately | $899.99 | Enthusiasts with Pro-enhanced games and a suitable display |
| PlayStation Portal | Not a console-storage model | Not applicable | $249.99 | A separate PlayStation accessory, not an alternative to a PS5 console |
At those listed prices, PS5 Pro is $250 more than the standard PS5 and $300 more than the Digital Edition. That difference is before a compatible disc drive, a stand, tax, or any game purchases. Advertised storage is the drive’s stated size; formatted capacity available for games and applications will be lower.
Standard PS5: the practical all-rounder
What you get
The standard PS5 includes a disc drive, supports PS5 and PS4 game discs, and also downloads games. It is the only configuration in this group that is ready for physical media without an additional purchase. A disc library can include games you already own, used copies, borrowed discs, and Blu-ray movies.
Why its flexibility matters
Physical games can be resold, lent, or bought second-hand; those options are unavailable for a download-only purchase. A disc-equipped console also protects you from having to repurchase an existing PS4 or PS5 disc library digitally. If more than one person in your household uses discs, the price gap versus the Digital Edition can disappear quickly when you account for even a few physical purchases.

Who should choose it
- Anyone upgrading from a disc-equipped PS4.
- Collectors with PS4 or PS5 discs.
- Players who buy games from physical retailers or borrow them.
- Households that want both disc playback and downloads without checking model compatibility later.
The standard PS5 does not provide Pro’s enhanced rendering features, but it remains the lower-cost way to access the full PS5 software library when physical media is part of your routine.
PS5 Digital Edition: the lower-price, download-only route
What changes without a drive
The Digital Edition has no disc drive. Games are downloaded from the PlayStation Store or accessed through supported PlayStation Plus catalog features. A physical PS4 or PS5 disc cannot be inserted, and a Blu-ray or DVD cannot be played unless you use another device.
The price calculation
At Sony’s April 2026 US recommendations, Digital Edition costs $50 less than the standard PS5. That saving is meaningful if you never buy discs. It is less compelling if you expect to add a drive later, because the separately sold drive and any required cover add cost and require model verification.
Adding a drive later
Sony identifies the removable drive as compatible with PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim groups and with PS5 Pro. The drive requires an internet connection to pair with the console during setup. Check the exact CFI model on the console or packaging before buying; do not assume that every older Digital Edition accepts the same accessory.

PS5 Pro: what the premium is buying
Sony’s hardware claims
In its September 10, 2024 announcement, Sony Interactive Entertainment said PS5 Pro has 67% more GPU compute units than the then-current PS5 and 28% faster memory, enabling up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay. Those are Sony’s launch-period vendor figures, not independent measurements and not a guarantee that every game renders 45% faster.

The same announcement highlighted advanced ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an AI-driven upscaling technique. Sony’s current buying page frames the practical result as improved image clarity on a 4K TV and higher frame rates in games that carry a PS5 Pro enhancement.
Why enhancements are game dependent
A game must be updated or otherwise supported to expose the specific Pro options. Sony’s compatibility wording is explicit: enhanced features are available only in selected PS5 games and vary by game. One title may offer a sharper 4K-oriented mode, another may hold a higher frame rate, and another may show little visible difference from the standard PS5.
Sony’s launch announcement named Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered as expected to receive enhancements at announcement time. That is an illustrative launch-era list, not a current or exhaustive compatibility catalogue. Check the current PlayStation Store entry or the publisher’s information for each game you care about.
Game Boost for older titles
Sony also says Game Boost may stabilize or improve performance in supported PS4 and PS5 games and can apply to more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games. “May” is important: the feature does not promise a visible upgrade for every older title. Treat it as a compatibility benefit, not as a blanket remastering of the PS4 library.
What the evidence cannot promise
There is no independent test data establishing one universal real-world performance gap between PS5 Pro and PS5. Image quality and frame-rate gains depend on the game, its graphics modes, the display, and the software version. If your most-played titles have no Pro support, the premium buys hardware headroom you may not notice.
Do you need an 8K television?
No. Sony markets the most common Pro benefit around sharper images on a 4K TV and higher frame rates in supported games. Its support guide says selected games can support up to 8K, while system and media-app output is listed up to 4K, gameplay clips up to 4K, and screenshots and Media Gallery up to 8K. “Up to 8K” applies to selected cases; it does not mean every game renders at 8K, and an 8K television is not required for the other Pro features.

A good way to judge your display is to ask whether you sit close enough, use a large enough screen, and notice the difference between a sharper quality mode and a smoother performance mode. If you normally play on a small 1080p set or from a distant couch, the visual return on a Pro upgrade is less certain than it is on a 4K screen where you can compare the modes directly.
Physical games, disc drives, and accessory compatibility
Choosing a drive for Digital Edition or Pro
The add-on drive plays 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD discs. Sony requires an internet connection to pair it with the console during initial setup. For a slim Digital Edition, confirm that the console belongs to the CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 group. For Pro, use the drive and cover identified for that model.
Covers and stands are not universal
Sony states that older covers for CFI-1000 and slim CFI-2000 groups are not compatible with PS5 Pro. The Pro compatibility guide lists horizontal stand feet, a vertical stand, and the disc drive with cover as compatible accessories. Do not assume an existing cover, base, or stand will fit simply because it was sold for a PS5.

Existing PlayStation accessories
Sony’s 2024 announcement says PS5 Pro works with existing PlayStation accessories including PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, the Access controller, Pulse Elite, and Pulse Explore. The current buying page also lists controllers, headsets, storage expansion, the removable drive, a vertical stand, and a controller charging station. Verify the model and connection requirements for any third-party or legacy accessory before purchase.

The listed capacities are 825GB for Digital Edition, 1TB for the standard PS5, and 2TB for Pro. Because the operating system and formatting use part of the drive, none of those numbers is the amount available for games. Digital buyers should pay particular attention to this difference: large modern installs can consume a substantial portion of the usable space, and deleting a game does not erase your ownership but does require downloading it again later.
Pro’s 2TB listing gives it the most headroom for a large digital library. That is a convenience, not a guarantee that every game will fit indefinitely. The standard PS5 and Digital Edition can use supported storage expansion, but check the current requirements and compatibility before buying a drive.
Should an existing PS5 owner upgrade to Pro?
Start with a title-by-title audit rather than comparing specifications in isolation.
- Write down the games you play every week, not only the games on your wish list.
- Check each game’s current store page or publisher notes for a PS5 Pro enhancement label.
- Identify whether the enhancement addresses your complaint: unstable performance, soft resolution, limited ray tracing, or a forced choice between image quality and frame rate.
- Consider your display. A 4K television and a seating position where you can see fine detail make a visual upgrade easier to appreciate.
- Subtract the value of your current PS5 only if you have a realistic resale or trade-in option; do not treat an assumed price as guaranteed.
- Add the cost of a compatible disc drive if you own physical games, then compare the total with keeping your current PS5.
This approach avoids paying $250 more than the standard PS5 merely for a specification sheet. If your library is dominated by enhanced games and you care about maintaining higher frame rates without sacrificing image quality, Pro has a rational case. If most of your playtime is in unenhanced games or you are satisfied with your current modes, keeping the existing PS5 is the safer value decision.

A decision table for common buyers
| Your situation | Most sensible choice | Reason | Check before ordering |
|---|---|---|---|
| You own PS4/PS5 discs or buy used games | Standard PS5 | Drive is included and the console supports physical PS4 and PS5 games | Confirm the seller’s model and current price |
| You buy only downloads and want the lowest listed console price | PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 Sony US recommendation, $50 below standard PS5 | Accept no disc playback and verify usable storage needs |
| You want Pro visuals in a short list of supported games | PS5 Pro | 2TB capacity plus Pro-specific image and frame-rate options | Check each game’s current enhancement support and your display |
| You have a Digital Edition but may return to discs | Digital Edition plus compatible drive, or standard PS5 | The drive is an extra purchase and must match CFI-2000/2100 slim groups | Calculate the combined cost before choosing the cheaper console |
| You already own a standard PS5 and are satisfied with performance | Keep the current PS5 | Pro gains are title dependent, not universal | Upgrade only after checking your personal game list |
Buying and setup checklist
- Set your region and budget. The prices above are US recommended retail figures effective April 2, 2026. Use your local retailer or Sony’s local store for the amount, taxes, warranty, and stock that actually apply.
- Choose physical or digital first. If you have discs, include the standard model or the cost of a compatible drive in every comparison.
- Check the exact model group. For a slim Digital Edition, look for CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 compatibility; do not rely on a generic “works with PS5” listing.
- Audit your games for Pro support. Use the current game page or publisher information, because the launch-era enhancement list is not exhaustive or permanent.
- Match the console to the display. Pro’s marketed advantages center on 4K clarity and supported higher frame rates; 8K is optional and limited to selected cases.
- Budget for accessories. A Pro may need a separately sold disc drive if you collect discs, and a stand or cover may not transfer from an older PS5.
- Update and pair accessories during setup. The removable drive needs an internet connection for its initial pairing.
A policy change physical-media buyers should know
Sony’s current purchase page states that, from January 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be sold in digital format only. It also says discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. This does not mean existing discs stop working, and it does not change the current ability of a disc-equipped PS5 to play supported physical games. It does mean that buyers who value future physical releases should understand the stated date and scope rather than assume a disc drive guarantees every future release will have a disc edition.
Final buying guidance
The standard PS5 is the default recommendation because its included drive handles the widest range of libraries and its official US price remains below Pro. Digital Edition is the cleanest value when you are genuinely download-only and will not later pay for a drive. PS5 Pro is worth buying when three conditions line up: your regular games have current Pro enhancements, your 4K display can reveal the difference, and the premium over PS5 is comfortable after accounting for accessories.
Before checkout, verify the retailer’s live price, the exact console model, the games you play most, and any drive or stand you need. Those four checks matter more than a headline specification or a launch-era promise.
