The LG UltraGear evo AI GM9 (27GM950B-B) is a 27-inch 5K Hyper Mini LED gaming monitor built around a clear trade-off: run at 5120 × 2880 resolution and up to 165Hz, or switch to QHD, 2560 × 1440, for up to 330Hz. It is most compelling for someone who wants a sharp 5K desktop and the option of a much faster refresh rate for games—but the faster mode gives up resolution, and reaching 330Hz requires a compatible DisplayPort 2.1 graphics card.
What kind of monitor is the UltraGear evo AI GM9?
The GM9 is a 27-inch LCD monitor with a Hyper Mini LED backlight, 5K resolution and a dual-mode refresh-rate feature. LG lists a pixel density of 218 pixels per inch, along with 9,216 mini LEDs and 2,304 local dimming zones. Those are manufacturer specifications, not measurements from independent testing.

Its central appeal is versatility: 5K can suit detailed desktop work and games where image detail matters, while its QHD mode can prioritize refresh rate. That makes the GM9 easier to understand as two display configurations in one monitor than as a screen that delivers its maximum resolution and maximum refresh rate simultaneously.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow do 5K at 165Hz and QHD at 330Hz compare?
| Mode | Resolution | Maximum refresh rate listed by LG | Practical priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5K | 5120 × 2880 | 165Hz | More image detail at a still-high refresh rate |
| QHD | 2560 × 1440 | 330Hz | Higher refresh rate at substantially lower resolution |
The refresh figures are LG-published maximums. LG says the 330Hz QHD mode requires a graphics card supporting DisplayPort 2.1; the rate actually available can also depend on the computer and its configuration. Check the GPU, connection, and supported mode before buying on the assumption that a particular system will reach 330Hz.

So, is 5K at 165Hz better than QHD at 330Hz? Neither is categorically better: 5K favors pixel detail, while QHD at 330Hz favors refresh rate. The choice depends on which matters more in the games and other work you do, and whether your computer can drive the desired mode.
What does LG claim about brightness, HDR and Mini LED?
LG lists VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certification and peak brightness of up to 1,250 nits. It also specifies 2,304 local dimming zones and describes that count as 1.5 times the zones of a conventional Mini LED monitor, citing its internal comparison with its 27GR95UM model. These figures describe LG’s published specifications and comparison, not independently verified performance.

Local dimming lets the backlight adjust different areas of the screen separately, a design intended to improve contrast in scenes that combine bright highlights and dark areas. LG says its Zero Optical Distance design is meant to reduce light leakage and halo effects, and lists TÜV Rheinland Anti-Blooming certification. Certification and design intent do not establish that viewers will never see blooming; that depends on real viewing conditions and requires independent assessment.
What are the GM9’s AI features—and what do they do?
LG lists 5K AI Upscaling, AI Scene Optimization and AI Sound. Upscaling is intended to enhance lower-resolution input for display on the 5K screen; it is not the same as rendering a game natively at 5K. LG says the feature requires at least Wide Full HD input, varies with source quality, and recommends setting a PC or console to 1080p at 60Hz for optimal upscaling.

Those conditions matter if the idea is to use AI processing to compensate for a device that cannot produce a 5K signal. The published feature description does not establish how much sharper a particular source will look, or how the processing affects image quality in specific games. AI Scene Optimization and AI Sound are also listed features; their names alone do not establish a measurable benefit.
Which connections and gaming features does LG list?
LG lists DisplayPort 2.1 (UHBR20), HDMI 2.1 and USB-C with up to 90W Power Delivery. USB-C power delivery may let a compatible laptop use one cable for display and charging, subject to the laptop’s needs. LG also specifies a 1ms GtG response time; this is a manufacturer figure, not an independently measured result.

LG lists FreeSync Premium and NVIDIA G-SYNC compatibility. Compatibility can depend on the graphics card, port and configuration; LG’s US product information includes GPU-generation conditions for variable refresh rate over DisplayPort and HDMI. Confirm the conditions for your specific computer and connection rather than assuming every combination supports VRR.
Who should consider the LG GM9?
- Consider it if you want a 27-inch 5K display and value the option to switch to a very high refresh rate at QHD.
- Consider it if Mini LED local dimming, a high published peak-brightness specification, and USB-C charging are features you specifically want in one monitor.
- Think carefully if you expect 330Hz at 5K: LG’s listed maximums pair 165Hz with 5K and 330Hz with QHD.
- Check compatibility first if your purchase depends on 330Hz, variable refresh rate, or USB-C charging; your GPU, computer, cable and configuration matter.
- Wait for independent testing if your decision depends on real-world blooming, brightness, response time, or the visible effect of AI processing. LG’s specifications do not answer those performance questions by themselves.
What did the GM9 cost at launch, and is that still the price?
In a US pre-order announcement dated April 7, 2026, LG named a price of $1,199.99. That is a historical pre-order price, not confirmation of today’s price or availability. Check a current retailer listing in your region before making a budget decision; prices, promotions and stock can change.

What is not established by the published specifications?
The available product information establishes LG’s advertised modes, feature set and ratings, but not independent measurements of brightness, contrast, response time, input lag, blooming or upscaling quality. No competitor was assessed on the same evidence here, so the specifications alone cannot establish that the GM9 is the best 5K gaming monitor or a better buy than another display. Warranty, regional port details, included cables and current firmware should also be checked for the specific market and listing.
