The Lenovo Legion Go S can be a comfortable, capable handheld, but the right buying decision depends on the exact configuration. SteamOS and Windows models use different processors and may include different memory and storage, so performance and software flexibility are not interchangeable. Its strongest points are a large, sharp high-refresh display, comfortable controls, and useful ports; its main compromises are short battery life in demanding games, fan noise, and an IPS screen rather than OLED.
What changes between Legion Go S configurations?
“Legion Go S” describes a family, not one fixed specification. Lenovo’s PSREF for model family 8APU1, revised May 6, 2026, lists an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme and Windows 11 Home or SteamOS options. Separately, PCWorld reviewed a Windows 11 model with the four-core AMD Ryzen Z2 Go. Do not apply results from one to the other.

Memory cannot be upgraded after purchase, so select enough RAM for the games and other software you expect to use. Storage expansion is more flexible: the listed specifications include a microSD reader, alongside the internal M.2 drive.

Comfortable controls and a large display
Windows Central and Tom’s Guide both praised the rounded grip and comfortable ergonomics in their SteamOS reviews. Lenovo specifies an 8-inch, 1920×1200 IPS touchscreen with a 16:10 aspect ratio, 48–120Hz variable refresh rate, 500-nit brightness, and 100% sRGB coverage. Those are manufacturer specifications for the 8APU1 family, not an OLED panel. [Lenovo PSREF, revised May 6, 2026]

The display’s size, resolution, and refresh-rate range make it a strong fit for handheld play where sharpness and motion smoothness matter. PCWorld liked the large, high-resolution IPS screen, while preferring the deeper blacks and more vivid image of the Steam Deck OLED; that is a reviewer’s display preference, not a universal ranking. [PCWorld review]
SteamOS offers a console-like handheld experience
Windows Central and Tom’s Guide described their SteamOS review units as responsive and convenient to use as handheld gaming systems. If most of your library is on Steam and you want a controller-oriented interface, SteamOS is a meaningful advantage. It is not a guarantee that every game or peripheral behaves identically to a Steam Deck or another SteamOS device.

Useful ports and removable storage
Lenovo lists two USB4 Type-C ports with DisplayPort 1.4 and USB Power Delivery 3.0 support, a microSD card reader, a 3.5mm combo audio jack, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3. The ports can support external displays and peripherals, but dock, monitor, charging, and cable compatibility still depends on the specific accessories. What are the main drawbacks?
Demanding games can drain the battery quickly
Lenovo specifies a 55.5Wh battery. That capacity does not translate into a fixed gaming runtime: the game, performance mode, screen settings, and configuration all affect battery use. Windows Central’s reviewer measured 1 hour 22 minutes during intensive gaming on a Z1 Extreme SteamOS review unit. Tom’s Guide reported about 1.5 hours in Doom: The Dark Ages at 1200p and 30W performance mode before a battery warning on its Z1 Extreme SteamOS unit. These are separate tests, not a single expected runtime for every Legion Go S. [Lenovo PSREF, revised May 6, 2026] [Windows Central review] [Tom’s Guide review]

Lenovo also advertises Super Rapid Charge, with a stated charge from 0% to 30% in 10 minutes and to 70% in 30 minutes. That manufacturer charging claim is separate from gaming endurance. [Lenovo PSREF, revised May 6, 2026]
Fans and touchpad may bother some users
Tom’s Guide found the fans loud, including during downloads and installation. Windows Central called the touchpad finicky, and PCWorld criticized its small size. These are reviewer observations rather than measured defects that will affect every user in the same way. [Tom’s Guide review] [Windows Central review] [PCWorld review]

SteamOS is not a substitute for Windows software
SteamOS can be a poor fit if you rely on Windows-specific applications or non-Steam storefronts. Tom’s Guide identifies those platform limitations as a buying consideration. A Windows model provides broader compatibility with Windows software, but its performance should be judged by the processor and memory configuration in that specific SKU rather than inferred from SteamOS reviews. [Tom’s Guide review]
How does it perform in games?
Published results show why it is important to match a performance claim to the tested model. Tom’s Guide tested a Z1 Extreme SteamOS review unit at 1200p and maximum graphical settings, reporting 32 FPS in Assassin’s Creed Mirage, 32 FPS in Dirt 5, and 39 FPS in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. In its comparison, a Windows 11 Z2 Go model recorded 21, 20, and 16 FPS in those games, respectively. Processor, memory, and operating system differed, so that comparison does not isolate the effect of Windows versus SteamOS. [Tom’s Guide review, 2025]

PCWorld recorded a PCMark 10 score of 5,406 and a Cinebench R20 multi-core score of 2,215 on its Windows Z2 Go review unit. These are benchmark results for that model and test procedure, not scores for every Legion Go S. PCWorld’s battery procedure used a repeated 4K Tears of Steel video, airplane mode, and a 250-nit display; that is not directly comparable with the demanding-game runtime tests above. Should you choose SteamOS or Windows?
Choose SteamOS if your priority is handheld gaming
- Your main library is on Steam and you value a controller-first interface.
- You are comfortable checking whether particular games, launchers, and accessories work with SteamOS.
- You have identified the processor, RAM, and storage in the specific SteamOS listing rather than relying on the model name alone.
Choose Windows if you need Windows compatibility
- You use Windows applications or storefronts that are important to your setup.
- You are willing to use a handheld PC interface and to assess performance based on the Windows model’s actual processor.
- You have checked whether the advertised model is the Z2 Go configuration or another SKU; results from the Z1 Extreme SteamOS unit do not establish its performance.
Neither operating system guarantees the same experience as the official SteamOS model. A configuration’s processor, memory, installed software, and game compatibility all matter. Check the exact SKU and the games or applications you care about before treating one review as a proxy for another configuration.
Is the Lenovo Legion Go S worth buying?
It is a plausible choice if you value its comfortable grip, large high-refresh IPS display, and the operating system that fits your library. It is a weaker fit if long unplugged sessions in demanding games, OLED contrast, quiet operation, or an upgradeable memory configuration are priorities. Whether it is good value also depends on the current local price of the precise processor, operating system, memory, and storage combination; the cited reviews do not establish current pricing or regional availability.
