The Lenovo Legion 9i Gen 10 can replace a desktop for someone who wants one powerful computer that can be moved between desk locations. It is not a practical lightweight laptop: the reviewed 18-inch configuration weighs about 3.5 kg (7.71 lb), uses a 400 W adapter, and trades easy portability for high-end gaming performance and extensive expansion options. Whether it is the right replacement depends on the exact configuration and how often you need to carry it.
What does “desktop replacement” mean for the Legion 9i?
For the Legion 9i, desktop replacement is a use case, not a claim that it matches every desktop in performance, upgrade freedom, or value. Its strongest case is a powerful gaming system with a large high-resolution display and substantial memory and storage expansion in one chassis. Its compromise is that moving it means moving a large laptop and its power brick, while its most demanding performance mode brings more fan noise.

What configuration did the review test?
PC Gamer’s review, published November 25, 2025, covered one 18IAX10 configuration: an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX, NVIDIA RTX 5080 Laptop GPU with 16 GB memory at 175 W, 64 GB DDR5, a 2 TB Samsung PM9E1 PCIe 5.0 SSD, and an 18-inch 3840 × 2400 IPS display running at 240 Hz. The unit had a 99.9 Wh battery and weighed 3.5 kg (7.71 lb). The review describes the panel as glossy IPS, not OLED. Its measurements and judgments apply to that sample, not every regional Legion 9i SKU. Read PC Gamer’s review and test context.

Lenovo’s family specifications list configurations up to Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and RTX 5090, alongside other display and memory options. Those are family-level maximums, not the parts in PC Gamer’s RTX 5080 review unit. Lenovo also announced an optional glasses-free 3D configuration; buyers should verify that their exact model includes the display mode they want. Lenovo PSREF
How well does it perform for gaming?
PC Gamer’s reviewer was positive about the tested machine’s high-end gaming performance and build quality, particularly for portable 4K gaming. One important setup detail is that the review found the stock software profile could leave performance unused until the reviewer selected an appropriate profile in LegionSpace.
In that reviewer’s testing, changing from Quiet to Performance produced a major increase in GPU power and clock speed, along with higher temperatures and fan noise. This is a result for the tested unit and profiles, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or improvement in every game. If you buy one, check the selected profile when performance seems unexpectedly low, and expect the more aggressive profile to be louder.
The tested screen is an 18-inch 3840 × 2400 IPS panel at 240 Hz. Lenovo’s guide also documents selectable 240 Hz and 440 Hz modes, while Lenovo’s announcement describes a dual-mode display offering 240 Hz at 4K and up to 440 Hz at FHD. Confirm the display specification and available modes for the SKU you are considering. Lenovo Legion 9i (18-inch, Gen 10) User Guide
Can you expand memory and storage?
Expansion is a notable part of the desktop-replacement argument. Lenovo documents four SO-DIMM memory slots and four M.2 SSD slots: one PCIe Gen 5 slot and three PCIe Gen 4 slots. Lenovo lists family support up to 192 GB of memory and up to 8 TB of storage, but those maximums do not mean every configuration ships with that capacity or that any component will fit every model. Check model-level support and physical compatibility before buying parts or planning an upgrade. User Guide · PSREF
Rank #2
- ULTRA-FAST GAMING AND CREATION: Powered by the Intel Core Ultra 9 processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 laptop GPU, this system delivers smooth 4K gaming, rapid video rendering, and AI-accelerated tasks, so you can play demanding titles and edit high-resolution content without lag.
- MASSIVE 18 INCH DUAL-MODE DISPLAY: The 18 inch WQUXGA screen offers a 4K resolution at 240Hz for stunning detail, and can switch to Full HD at 440Hz for competitive gaming, giving you the flexibility to enjoy immersive visuals or lightning-fast response times.
- ADVANCED COOLING FOR SUSTAINED POWER: Legion Coldfront with vapor cooling technology keeps the system running at peak performance during long gaming sessions or intensive workloads, preventing thermal throttling and maintaining consistent frame rates.
- HIGH-CAPACITY MEMORY AND STORAGE: With 64GBGB of DDR5 RAM and a 4TB Gen5 solid state drive, you can run multiple demanding applications simultaneously and load large game files or video projects in seconds, ensuring a seamless workflow.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY AND BATTERY LIFE: Thunderbolt 5 ports support up to 80Gbps data transfer and 140W power delivery, while Wi-Fi 7 provides fast wireless speeds, and the 99.9 watt-hour battery allows for extended unplugged use during travel or meetings.
Expansion is not the same as convenient serviceability: PC Gamer lists difficult internal access as a drawback. Treat the documented slots as capacity for expansion, not evidence that upgrades are effortless. The review also described the tested SSD as average, so the presence of a PCIe 5.0 drive should not be taken as proof that storage performance is a standout in everyday use.

At about 3.5 kg before the 400 W power adapter, this is better suited to occasional moves between workspaces than everyday commuting. Lenovo’s user guide lists a 99.9 Wh battery, and the reviewer characterized battery life as ordinary for this performance class. Plan on using an outlet for demanding gaming rather than treating the machine as a long-running unplugged system.

Who should consider it—and who should pass?
It may suit you if
- You want one high-end gaming computer that can be relocated occasionally rather than carried daily.
- A large, high-resolution, high-refresh display is valuable to you.
- You expect to expand memory or storage and are willing to verify model compatibility and deal with challenging internal access.
- You can tolerate increased fan noise when selecting the performance profile needed for demanding workloads.
Look elsewhere if
- You need a light laptop for regular travel or long sessions away from an outlet.
- Quiet operation, long battery life, simple maintenance, or lower cost matters more than top-tier gaming capability.
- You need proof that the laptop will match a particular desktop build in sustained performance, upgrade flexibility, or value; the available review is not a controlled desktop comparison.
What should you check before buying?
- Match the model code. Confirm the exact 18IAX10 configuration, processor, GPU, memory, storage, and display in the listing and regional specifications.
- Verify the display. Check resolution, refresh modes, and whether the listing includes the optional glasses-free 3D configuration if that matters to you.
- Plan the desk and transport. Account for the roughly 3.5 kg reviewed configuration and the 400 W adapter, not only the laptop chassis.
- Check upgrade compatibility. Use Lenovo’s model-specific documentation for supported memory and SSD configurations rather than assuming the family maximums apply to every SKU.
- Compare current ownership terms. Prices and availability change by market; compare the exact configuration and local warranty or service terms rather than relying on launch-era or review-context prices.
Verdict
The Legion 9i Gen 10 is a credible desktop replacement for a narrow, practical meaning of the phrase: a high-power gaming system you can move occasionally, with a large built-in screen and meaningful expansion potential. It is not a desktop in laptop form without compromises. Its mass, large adapter, battery limitations, performance-mode noise, cost, and difficult internal access make it a poor fit for buyers who prioritize portability or value. PC Gamer’s positive verdict applies to its tested RTX 5080 configuration; choose based on the exact SKU and the trade-offs that matter to you.
