Is the Kioxia EXCERIA PRO G2 2TB Worth Buying? Speed, Endurance and Compatibility

The Kioxia EXCERIA PRO G2 2TB is a high-end PCIe 5.0 SSD with manufacturer-rated sequential speeds of up to 14,900 MB/s read and 13,400 MB/s write, plus a 1,200 TBW endurance rating. Those figures make it an attractive option for a compatible Gen5 system, but they are controlled-test maximums—not a promise of the speed every PC will deliver. Tom’s Hardware’s September 12, 2026 review found it efficient and especially strong in 4K random-read latency, while noting it did not outrun the fastest drives in its class.

Is the Kioxia EXCERIA PRO G2 2TB worth it?

It is worth considering if your desktop or laptop has a suitable M.2 2280 slot, supports PCIe 5.0 x4, and provides adequate cooling. Its headline sequential ratings are high, and its 1,200 TBW rating is substantial. The caveat is that a peak specification does not tell you how quickly a drive will handle every workload: independent testing by Tom’s Hardware characterized this model as a high-end, efficient drive with low 4K random-read latency, but not the fastest among its direct peers.

Whether it is a good buy also depends on the current price and the seller’s region and warranty terms. Tom’s Hardware reported that Kioxia did not officially distribute the drive at US retail when it published its review and cautioned that Amazon.com listings could be imports. Treat that as a dated availability observation, not a guarantee about today’s stock: check the listing, seller, return policy, and applicable warranty before ordering.

How fast is the Kioxia EXCERIA PRO G2 2TB?

Kioxia rates the 2TB model for up to 14,900 MB/s sequential reads and 13,400 MB/s sequential writes. It also lists maximum random performance of 2,250,000 IOPS read and 1,950,000 IOPS write. These are manufacturer maxima measured with CrystalDiskMark 8.0.4 x64: sequential tests at Q=32, T=1, and 4KiB random tests at Q=32, T=16. Kioxia says results can vary by device and file size.

KIOXIA Exceria Pro G2 - 2TB PCIe 5.0 M.2 2280 NVMe SSD
  • High-speed performance: KIOXIA EXCERIA PRO G2 2TB SSD provides read speeds up to 14,900 MB/s and write speeds up to 13,400 MB/s for gaming, content creation, AI generation and video editing
  • Future-proof and backward compatible: PCIe 5.0 x4 and NVMe 2.0d technology ensure responsive performance, fast data access and smooth multitasking for demanding applications
  • Easy installation: M.2 form factor internal SSD is designed for low power consumption, reduced heat build-up, and installs directly into compatible notebooks, desktops, custom builds, and creator workstations
  • "Made in Japan" memory technology: KIOXIA BiCS FLASH 3D flash memory provides high memory density and fast data access for gaming, media playback, 4K video editing and RAW image workflows
  • GENEROUS STORAGE CAPACITY 2TB provide plenty of space for games, applications, media files, and professional projects; KIOXIA SSD utility software supports drive management and maintenance

Kioxia’s EXCERIA PRO G2 Product Brief v1.0 describes these as the best values from a specific company test environment and says it does not warrant those read or write speeds in individual devices. Your result depends on the host system, workload, and test conditions; the ratings should not be read as a guaranteed everyday transfer rate.

Tom’s Hardware also lists the drive’s sequential ratings as 14,900/13,400 MB/s in its September 12, 2026 review. Its separate review findings—such as low random-read latency and performance behind the class leaders—belong to that reviewer’s test context and are not interchangeable with Kioxia’s controlled maximums.

Will this M.2 2280 PCIe 5.0 SSD work in your motherboard?

Check the system manual or motherboard specifications before buying. The drive is an M.2 2280 M-key device and is specified for PCIe 5.0 x4. A physically compatible slot may support a lower PCIe generation; the drive may work in a compatible backward-generation slot, but it will not provide its maximum rated interface speed there. The available information does not establish compatibility with every motherboard or laptop.

  • Confirm that the system has an open M.2 M-key slot that accepts a 2280 drive.
  • Check that the slot supports PCIe 5.0 x4 if you want Gen5 interface performance.
  • Verify clearance around the slot, including any motherboard cover, graphics card, or laptop chassis restrictions.
  • Check system documentation for BIOS and operating-system support for an NVMe drive.
  • Review the system’s M.2 cooling provisions before using the drive for sustained workloads.

Does the EXCERIA PRO G2 need a heatsink?

Kioxia advertises a label designed to aid heat dissipation and performance stability under heavy workloads. That is a manufacturer claim, not evidence that the label replaces a motherboard heatsink or adequate airflow in every build. Follow the PC or motherboard maker’s installation guidance, and make sure any cover or heatsink fits the drive without obstructing nearby components. A compatible M.2 2280 heatsink may be relevant if the system lacks adequate M.2 cooling, but no particular heatsink has been validated here.

How much TBW does the 2TB EXCERIA PRO G2 have?

Kioxia rates the 2TB model at 1,200 TBW. TBW is a manufacturer endurance rating based on the JEDEC JESD219A July 2012 SSD endurance workload basis identified on Kioxia’s product comparison page. It is a specification, not a prediction of how long an individual SSD will last; it does not establish a failure rate or guarantee a particular service life.

Kioxia offers a warranty of up to five years, subject to an earlier-ending condition: coverage ends when the warranty period from purchase in original sealed packaging expires or when the SSD Utility health gauge reaches zero Percentage Life Left, whichever happens first. Use Kioxia SSD Utility to monitor that gauge, and check the applicable regional warranty terms for the specific seller and unit.

What does the independent review say about real-use performance?

Tom’s Hardware’s review, published September 12, 2026, describes the EXCERIA PRO G2 as high-end, efficient, and low-latency in 4K random reads, while finding it short of the fastest direct peers. That is a qualified positive assessment, not a claim that this drive is the best choice for every task or that it will lead every benchmark.

For a purchase comparison, look beyond sequential maximums. Compare results from the same benchmark and test setup, sustained-write behavior during long transfers, cooling, endurance and warranty limits, host compatibility, and current price per usable capacity. No current price or direct-peer benchmark values are established here, so the ratings alone cannot show which drive is the better value today.

What should you check before ordering?

  1. Confirm fit and link speed. Verify M.2 2280 M-key clearance and PCIe 5.0 x4 support if you expect Gen5 performance.
  2. Check cooling. Confirm whether the system has an appropriate M.2 heatsink or other cooling provision for your workload.
  3. Verify the listing. Check that it is the 2TB EXCERIA PRO G2, identify the actual seller, and confirm stock and return terms.
  4. Confirm warranty region. If buying from a marketplace or cross-border seller, establish whether the unit is an import and how warranty service is handled before purchase.

Kioxia’s SSD Utility Management Software is identified for drive management and Percentage Life Left monitoring. Tom’s Hardware reports that the utility also includes drive/system summary, firmware update, health monitoring, secure erase, password protection, and troubleshooting. Check Kioxia’s current software requirements before relying on any particular feature or operating-system support.
