This is the original orange-glass VARMBLIXT, listed by IKEA US as article 905.251.50. It is a fixed-color LED lamp designed by Sabine Marcelis. The newer color-changing smart VARMBLIXT is a separate product, with different controls and features.

IKEA describes the original’s light as a warm, soft glow shining through its donut-shaped glass. That is the manufacturer’s description, not a measured assessment of color or brightness in a room. The 85-lumen rating points to accent or mood lighting rather than primary task or general room lighting.

How bright is the original VARMBLIXT?
IKEA lists 85 lumens. That modest stated output makes the lamp better suited to adding a low-level glow than lighting a desk, reading chair, or whole room. This is an inference from the specification, not the result of a room-brightness test.
Think of it as a visible design object that contributes ambient light. If you are choosing a lamp for a practical lighting job, compare the listed output and intended use with that job rather than assuming the unusual shape means it can replace a brighter lamp.

Can you use it on a table or mount it on a wall?
Both placements are part of IKEA’s description: the VARMBLIXT is a table/wall lamp. As a tabletop lamp, it needs a suitable surface and access to an outlet; its listed cord is 6 ft 7 in. For wall placement, check the local product instructions and mounting details before installation, and plan around the cord’s route. The available specifications do not establish installation ease or which fasteners are appropriate for a particular wall.

IKEA says the glass shade is mouth-blown by a craftsperson, so each lamp is unique. That is a product description, not an independent assessment of glass quality or consistency. IKEA’s care instruction is to clean it with a duster. The shade is glass, so handle it carefully when moving or cleaning the lamp.

How is the smart VARMBLIXT different?
The original orange-glass lamp has a fixed orange appearance. Reporting on the newer smart/color-changing version describes a preset color palette, an included remote, additional color and brightness options in an app, and smart features using IKEA’s DIRIGERA hub. Those features do not apply to the original article 905.251.50. TechRadar’s May 4, 2026 hands-on coverage concerns the newer model and says setup can be fiddly; that assessment should not be transferred to the original. Livingetc’s 2026 coverage also concerns the smart makeover. It quotes designer Sabine Marcelis on fine-tuning transitions between curated colors, a detail about the newer color-changing version rather than the original fixed-orange lamp. Livingetc’s coverage discusses that update. Wallpaper reported at the new edition’s rollout that the original would remain in IKEA’s catalogue; that report is not a guarantee of current stock in every country. If comparing the two, focus on the actual distinction: the original offers a fixed orange-glass look, while the newer version adds changing colors and smart controls. The newer model’s reported hub requirement and local configuration may affect convenience and total system cost, so check the specifications for the exact product and market before buying.
Who should buy the orange-glass VARMBLIXT?
- A good fit: someone who wants a distinctive sculptural lamp and low-level ambient light, with the choice of tabletop or wall placement.
- Look elsewhere for the lighting job: anyone who needs strong task lighting or a main source for a room should prioritize a product whose stated light output suits that purpose.
- Choose by model, not just the name: if color changes, app control, or smart-home features matter, verify that the listing is for the newer smart version rather than the original orange-glass model.
The original’s built-in LED also means it is not a standard bulb you can simply unscrew and replace. IKEA’s listing does not establish whether a replacement LED module is available.
