The Hansø Horizon is a motorized louvered pergola with phone, remote, and voice-assistant controls, according to Hansø. The company claims wind resistance of up to 165 mph with the louvers closed and the pergola properly ground-mounted, and 120 mph with the louvers open. Those are manufacturer-reported figures: the cited product page says the closed-louver rating is independently certified but does not provide the engineering report needed to assess that claim.
How the Horizon’s roof and hands-free controls work
Hansø describes the Horizon as a Generation 5 motorized pergola with a T6 aluminum frame, double-layer louvers, and integrated lighting. Its roof louvers rotate from 0 to 135 degrees, allowing the roof to be adjusted rather than remaining fixed. Hansø says users can operate the roof through a phone app, a remote, or a voice assistant, including Alexa or Google Home. These are product-page specifications, not independent hands-on findings. | Configuration | Hansø’s stated wind resistance | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Louvers closed | Up to 165 mph | Hansø says this requires proper ground mounting. The product page calls the rating independently certified, but does not include the engineering report, testing body, protocol, or complete rated installation configuration. |
| Louvers open | Up to 120 mph | Hansø product-page figure; the page does not provide a testing report or full configuration details. |
These figures should be treated as Hansø’s claims, not as independently verified performance results. The stated closed-louver value is conditional on proper ground mounting; the page does not establish that every foundation, anchoring method, site, or installation meets that condition. Does a 165 mph claim mean the pergola is hurricane-resistant?
It is a notable wind-resistance claim, but the number alone does not establish how the pergola will perform in a specific storm or installation. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) defines Category 5 as maximum sustained winds of 157 mph or higher. That is a hurricane classification threshold, not a structural certification for a pergola. National Hurricane Center: Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale
The NHC says the Saffir-Simpson scale rates hurricanes by maximum sustained wind speed alone. It does not account for storm surge, rainfall flooding, or tornadoes, so a product’s wind rating is not a promise of protection against all hurricane hazards. Nor does comparing a product’s stated wind speed with a category threshold show how that product will fare under local exposure and installation conditions.

What to request before relying on the rating
- Ask Hansø for the engineering report behind the claimed independent certification, including the testing organization and protocol.
- Confirm whether the tested unit had its louvers open or closed, and whether its dimensions and accessories match the model you plan to buy.
- Get the complete anchoring and foundation requirements for the rated configuration, then confirm that they suit your site and local approvals.
- Check local building requirements with the relevant authority or a qualified local professional; a manufacturer’s product-page claim does not establish local approval.
Other specifications and the Hansø lineup
Hansø lists a 60 pounds-per-square-foot snow-load figure and a 10-year warranty for the Horizon. Treat these as manufacturer specifications. Review the current warranty terms, exclusions, installation requirements, and local snow conditions before purchase. Hansø Horizon product page
Hansø positions the Horizon between the manually operated PRO+ and the more premium Apex in its collection. That gives buyers a basic distinction in operation and product tier, but the available product information does not establish independent side-by-side performance differences. Compare documented wind ratings and tested positions, anchoring requirements, controls, snow-load specifications, warranty coverage, service and parts availability, installed price, dimensions, and accessory costs.
