Yes. The Greenland shark is considered the longest-lived known vertebrate, but the record rests on an age estimate—not an exact age observed over time. A 2016 study estimated that its largest sampled shark, measuring 502 cm, was 392 ± 120 years old.
What does “longest-lived” mean here?
The claim is about the longest-lived known vertebrate: an animal with a backbone. It does not establish that Greenland sharks outlive every animal, including long-lived invertebrates, or plants. It also refers to a model-based estimate for a sampled shark, not a confirmed age for an individual followed throughout its life.

How did scientists estimate Greenland shark age?
Unlike some sharks, Greenland sharks do not have hard structures with growth bands that researchers can count to determine age. In a 2016 study, researchers used radiocarbon dating on nuclei in the eye lenses. The lens proteins form before birth and persist, preserving a radiocarbon signal that can be used to estimate age. NOAA explains that “Carbon dating can only provide estimates, not a definitive age” (NOAA Ocean Service).

The key estimates
| Finding | What the study reported |
|---|---|
| Largest sampled shark | 502 cm long; estimated age 392 ± 120 years |
| Age at sexual maturity | Estimated at 156 ± 22 years |
Both figures are estimates from Nielsen and colleagues’ 2016 study, and the ± values are part of the reported uncertainty. The largest shark should not be described as definitively 392 years old; the study did not determine its exact birth year.

What does newer research add?
A 2026 study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reported a chromosome-level Greenland shark genome assembly measuring 5.9 Gb, with 96.7% completeness. The work explores lifespan extremes and population dynamics, but it is genomic research—not direct tracking of sharks or a precise redating of the animals in the 2016 study.
Why does the shark’s slow life history matter?
Greenland sharks mature very late: the 2016 study estimated sexual maturity at 156 ± 22 years. Canada’s 2025 COSEWIC assessment identifies slow growth, late maturity, uncertain fecundity and reproductive timing, and long generation length as factors that could constrain population recovery. NOAA also notes that Greenland sharks can be caught as bycatch in fishing nets and lines, making bycatch reduction relevant to conservation.
