With a clear view of the sky and several seconds of steady travel, its reading may be a helpful cross-check. Google labels the feature informational and says to confirm your actual driving speed with the vehicle speedometer. For speed-limit decisions, use the car’s speedometer.
What the Google Maps speedometer actually tells you
Google Maps estimates speed from the phone’s movement as calculated from satellite signals. It is not connected to the car’s speedometer, wheel-speed sensors, transmission, or engine computer. The phone calculates how its position changes over time and displays an estimated rate of travel.

That distinction matters because a GPS speed reading can be excellent in one situation and unstable in another. Open sky, a steady vehicle and a receiver with a good satellite view give the estimate time and data to settle. Buildings, bridges, trees, reflections and temporary signal loss can make it lag, fluctuate or differ from the car display.

Google’s own Maps Help guidance is unambiguous: “Speedometers shown in the Google Maps app are for informational use only.” It also says: “Make sure to use your vehicles’s speedometer to confirm your actual driving speed.” The wording means Maps is a secondary reference, not a replacement for the instrument installed in the vehicle.

How GPS speed and a vehicle speedometer are calculated
GPS speed: movement inferred from satellites
GPS satellites transmit timing and positioning signals. Your phone’s receiver uses signals from multiple satellites to estimate its location, then compares successive measurements to infer movement. The displayed speed is therefore dependent on the quality and continuity of those measurements, the satellite geometry available at that moment, the phone’s receiver design and the surrounding environment.
The phone does not need to know the car’s tyre size to make this estimate. It is measuring the phone’s motion through space. If the phone is firmly mounted in the vehicle, that motion is usually a good proxy for the car’s motion. If the phone is sliding, being held by a passenger or losing signal, the estimate can become less representative or less stable.
Vehicle speedometer: a vehicle-specific installed system
A car speedometer is part of the vehicle’s instrumentation. Depending on the vehicle, its input may come from wheel-speed sensors, a transmission or another calibrated vehicle system. The display is designed and tested for that particular vehicle configuration.
UNECE Regulation No. 39 defines requirements for speedometer equipment and its measuring mechanism. Its test provisions use tyre types normally fitted to the vehicle. That is why tyre dimensions and condition can affect the relationship between indicated speed and actual road speed. A replacement tyre with a different rolling circumference, substantial wear, incorrect inflation or an altered vehicle configuration can change the result.
The regulation does not create one universal offset that applies to every car. The relationship between indicated and actual speed is specific to the vehicle, its calibration and the tyres fitted for the test and in use.

What the official GPS accuracy figures mean
GPS.gov says smartphone GPS positioning is typically accurate to within a 4.9 m (16 ft.) radius under open sky. That is a positioning figure: it describes how close a location estimate may be to the phone’s true position under the stated conditions. It is not a promise that the speed shown in Google Maps will be within a fixed number of miles per hour.
GPS.gov also reports a global-average GPS signal-in-space user range-rate error of no more than 0.006 m/sec over any three-second interval, with 95% probability. This describes the transmitted signal’s performance. A real phone’s displayed speed must also account for its receiver, software, satellite geometry, obstructions, atmospheric effects and the way the app filters and displays data. The specification therefore cannot be read as a guaranteed error limit for your particular handset.
GPS.gov summarizes the issue this way: “As with positioning, the speed accuracy of GPS depends on many factors.” The same number can be highly repeatable on an open road and much less dependable between tall buildings or under heavy tree cover.
Why Google Maps and the car display can disagree
Satellite visibility and signal blockage
Buildings, bridges, cuttings, tunnels and dense trees can block or weaken satellite signals. Urban surfaces can also reflect signals before they reach the phone. Those multipath reflections make the receiver process a less direct signal and can cause an estimate to wander or arrive late.
Atmospheric conditions, satellite geometry and the phone’s receiver design also influence the result. A phone that can see a strong, well-distributed set of satellites may settle faster than another phone in the same car. A loss of signal can leave Maps temporarily showing an older estimate while it reacquires and recalculates.

Tyres and vehicle configuration
The car’s display is calibrated around the vehicle and tyre types normally fitted to it. Tyre size changes the distance travelled per wheel revolution. Wear reduces the rolling radius, while inflation pressure, load and other operating conditions can alter the effective rolling circumference. These are engineering influences, not evidence for a single error percentage that applies to all vehicles.
If a car has non-standard wheel or tyre dimensions, compare the fitted size with the specification for that vehicle before drawing conclusions from a persistent difference. A professional inspection is appropriate when the indicated speed seems abnormal or the vehicle has recently had its wheels, tyres or related components changed.
Different response and filtering
The two displays do not necessarily update at the same instant. A vehicle speedometer is continuously driven by the vehicle’s speed input. Maps may need several measurements before it presents a stable GPS estimate, and its display may smooth short-term changes. During acceleration, braking, hills or a bend, one display can appear to lead or lag the other even when both are functioning normally.
A brief jump or a few seconds of disagreement is therefore not enough to establish which system is closer to true road speed. Compare settled readings during steady travel instead.
GPS speed versus car speedometer: the practical differences
| Comparison | Google Maps speedometer | Vehicle speedometer |
|---|---|---|
| Measurement principle | Satellite-derived motion estimated by the phone | Vehicle-specific system using the car’s calibrated speed input |
| Conditions that can degrade it | Blocked sky view, buildings, bridges, trees, multipath reflections, atmospheric effects, satellite geometry and receiver design | Tyre size, tyre wear, inflation, load, vehicle configuration and calibration |
| Response | May take time to settle and can fluctuate when the signal or motion estimate changes | Provides a continuous vehicle display, although its indicated value still depends on the installed system and tyres |
| Official intended use | Google says the display is for informational use only | Google instructs drivers to use the vehicle speedometer to confirm actual driving speed |
| Best role in a comparison | Independent cross-check after the reading has stabilised | Primary reference for driving and speed-limit decisions |
How to compare the two readings safely
A useful comparison controls the conditions instead of treating one glance at the phone as a calibration test. Do not adjust your driving to chase a number on the screen, and do not handle the phone while moving.

- Choose a suitable road. Use a straight stretch with an open view of the sky. Avoid tunnels, dense urban canyons, heavy tree cover and roads where frequent braking is required.
- Set a steady, legal speed. Hold one speed for several seconds. A steady reading gives Maps time to settle and removes acceleration and braking as sources of apparent disagreement.
- Keep the phone secure. A dashboard phone mount for Google Maps can keep the device in a fixed position and visible without hand use. A mount does not improve the GPS measurement itself; it only supports safe, consistent placement.
- Wait for stability. Note the Maps value only after it has stopped jumping. Record the vehicle display at the same moment rather than comparing a value during acceleration.
- Repeat in the opposite direction. Drive back along the same area at the same steady speed. Reversing direction helps reveal a temporary signal or geometry effect that appears in only one run.
- Repeat at another steady speed. A persistent pattern across two settled speeds is more informative than one observation. Keep each run legal and maintain normal attention to traffic.
- Check the vehicle basics if the difference persists. Compare the tyre size and inflation with the vehicle specification. Consider whether the tyres are heavily worn or the vehicle has recently received non-standard wheels or tyres.
- Escalate abnormal findings. If the vehicle display appears inconsistent or the difference remains concerning after controlled repeats, arrange a professional speedometer or vehicle inspection. Do not recalibrate the car from a single phone reading.
How to interpret the result
Maps is lower than the car display
A lower settled GPS estimate does not by itself prove that the car speedometer is wrong. The phone may still be filtering an estimate, or local conditions may have reduced the quality of the satellite-derived motion. The car’s tyre condition and calibration also affect its indicated value.
Look for the pattern rather than assigning a universal percentage. If the difference appears only near buildings, trees or bridges and narrows on an open road, the environment is a likely contributor. If it remains similar on repeated open-sky runs, inspect tyre specification, inflation and vehicle calibration.
Maps is higher than the car display
The same caution applies in the other direction. A higher phone reading can result from a transient GPS estimate, display timing or a vehicle-side configuration issue. One higher value is not a reason to assume the phone is the more accurate instrument.
The readings match only after a delay
That behavior is consistent with different update and filtering processes. Hold the speed steady for several seconds before comparing. A value observed during acceleration or immediately after a turn is not a controlled comparison.

Why Google Maps speed can jump around
- Obstructed sky view: surrounding structures or foliage reduce the receiver’s access to satellites.
- Multipath reflections: signals reflected by buildings or other surfaces can produce less direct measurements.
- Recent movement change: acceleration, braking, a turn or a stop gives the app less steady motion data.
- Temporary signal interruption: the phone may need time to reacquire and recompute its estimate.
- Receiver and software behavior: different phones and app processing can smooth or delay the displayed value differently.
Move to an open-sky section, keep the vehicle at a steady legal speed and wait for the display to settle. If the value remains erratic despite those conditions, treat it as an unreliable cross-check and rely on the vehicle speedometer.
Tyre checks when a difference is persistent
Start with the information the vehicle manufacturer specifies for the car: the approved tyre dimensions and the recommended inflation pressures. Confirm that the fitted tyres match the expected size and that pressures are checked when appropriate for the vehicle’s instructions.
Consider whether the tyres are significantly worn or whether wheel and tyre changes have altered rolling circumference. Load and operating conditions can also change the effective rolling relationship. These checks can explain why a vehicle’s indicated speed does not correspond exactly to an independent estimate, but they cannot produce a universal correction for every model.

Using Maps while driving
Place the phone where it can be seen without being held. A secure dashboard mount supports a consistent setup and reduces distraction, but it does not make GPS speed more accurate. Keep navigation and speed checking subordinate to safe driving and local law.
Because Google classifies the Maps speedometer as informational, use it as an occasional reference after the value settles. Do not use a fluctuating phone number to decide whether to accelerate, brake or exceed a posted limit.
Which reading should you trust for a speed limit?
Use the vehicle speedometer. This is Google’s stated instruction, and it avoids treating a phone estimate as a certified or vehicle-calibrated instrument. GPS can be a useful independent check on a settled reading, especially in open sky, but it cannot replace the car display for speed-limit decisions.

Google Maps speed can be a good GPS-based estimate when the phone has a clear sky view and the car is travelling steadily. Its accuracy is conditional, and the official GPS figures describe signal and positioning performance rather than a guaranteed error for your phone’s displayed speed. The vehicle speedometer is calibrated as part of the car and its approved tyre configuration. Use Maps to cross-check, investigate persistent differences methodically and follow the car speedometer for everyday speed-limit decisions.
