Google rates it for water exposure up to 50 meters (5 ATM), which covers ordinary swimming, showering, rain and sweaty workouts when the tracker is intact and used as directed. The rating is measured for a new device leaving the factory, not a permanent guarantee after years of wear or damage.
What the 50-meter and 5 ATM ratings mean
Google’s technical specifications list Fitbit Air as “water resistant up to 50 meters.” Its Safety & Regulatory Guide also says the device complies with an IP68 dust-and-water protection rating and a 5 ATM water-protection rating under ISO 22810:2010 when it leaves the factory. The same guide states that the device “is not dust proof or water proof.”

“50 meters” is a laboratory water-pressure rating, not permission to take the tracker 50 meters underwater. Movement, water pressure, temperature, chemicals and the condition of the device can all affect real-world protection. Treat 5 ATM as a limit for normal surface activities rather than a depth rating for diving.

Can you swim or shower with Fitbit Air?
Yes. Google’s Fitbit Help water-resistance table lists Google Fitbit Air as water-resistant to 50 meters and describes the listed device class as designed to be swimproof.

Water resistance wears down
The seal and protective components are not permanent. Google says dust and water resistance can be diminished or lost over time through normal wear and tear, drops, other damage, repair, disassembly or similar intervention. A tracker that was safe to swim with when new may no longer have the same protection after a cracked case, impact or service work.
Liquid damage is excluded from Google’s limited-warranty coverage. If the device has been opened, repaired outside approved procedures or physically damaged, assume its original water protection may no longer apply.

How to care for Fitbit Air after it gets wet
- Remove the tracker from wet or sweaty use when practical and wipe the band and case dry.
- Let the band dry completely before putting it back on, especially after swimming or a high-intensity workout.
- Inspect the case, display and band connection after a drop or impact. Do not swim with a visibly damaged device.
- Keep soaps, oils, sunscreen and pool chemicals from building up on the device; rinse only as appropriate for the device and dry it afterward.
- Never charge the tracker while it or the charging contacts are wet. Allow everything to dry fully first.
Google specifically recommends drying the band after it gets wet. Drying also reduces skin irritation and helps prevent moisture from remaining around the contacts and band attachment.

No. The tracker’s 50-meter rating does not extend to its charger. Google says chargers and other accessories are not water-resistant. Keep the charger, cable and charging contacts away from sinks, showers, pools and wet countertops, and connect them only when the tracker and accessories are completely dry.

Choose the band for the conditions
The tracker and its band do not automatically share identical water limits. Google warns that some accessory bands, including woven, leather and metal bands, should not get wet. For regular swimming, showering or sweaty training, a compatible silicone replacement band is the sensible choice. Confirm exact Fitbit Air compatibility and current availability before buying; do not assume a third-party band has the tracker’s 50-meter rating.
- Silicone: the practical option for repeated wet use and easier drying.
- Woven: may retain moisture and is among the materials Google warns against getting wet.
- Leather: can be damaged or stained by water and should stay dry.
- Metal: is also listed among accessory materials that should not get wet; its water behavior does not change the tracker’s rating.
What to check before swimming
- The case and screen are free of cracks or impact damage.
- The tracker has not been disassembled or repaired in a way that could compromise its seal.
- You are using a band intended for wet conditions, preferably silicone.
- The charger is disconnected and stored somewhere dry.
- You understand that liquid damage is not covered by the limited warranty.
Bottom line for everyday use
Google Fitbit Air can get wet and is designed to be swimproof to 50 meters (5 ATM), so swimming, showering, rain and sweat are the clearest supported uses. It is not literally waterproof, and protection can decline with age, impact, damage or repair. Keep the charger dry, avoid unapproved deep or high-impact water activities, and dry the tracker and band after every wet session.
