Tom’s Guide’s August 20, 2026 review makes a strong value case for the Fluance RT87, listing it at $799 in the US, £630 in the UK and AU$1,200 in Australia. But that is the turntable price, not necessarily the cost of a working system: the RT87 has no built-in phono preamp, so you need a phono stage or an amplifier with a suitable phono input. Calling it the best turntable under $1,000 is the reviewer’s judgment, not the result of a comprehensive comparison across that category.
What the RT87 costs—and what the price leaves out
Tom’s Guide listed the Fluance RT87 at $799 in the US, £630 in the UK and AU$1,200 in Australia in its August 20, 2026 review. The page later showed an Amazon US listing at $799.99; retailer prices and availability can change, so treat these as review-page prices rather than guaranteed current offers.

The RT87 does not have a built-in phono preamp. To play records, connect it to either an external phono stage or an amplifier with a suitable phono input. You will also need speakers and amplification; as reviewer Tammy Rogers notes, powered speakers may be necessary if you do not already have a speaker-and-amplifier setup. Add those components to the turntable price when judging your total system cost.

What you get in the turntable
Tom’s Guide describes the RT87 as a dual-plinth reference turntable and lists a 21-pound weight, RCA connectivity and three playback speeds. The review’s listed cartridge and stylus configurations are Ortofon 2M Blue or Audio-Technica AT-VM95ML; it does not establish which configuration is included with every finish or purchase option.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Specification | What the review lists |
|---|---|
| Playback speeds | 33⅓, 45 and 78 RPM |
| Connectivity | RCA |
| Built-in phono preamp | No |
| Weight | 21 pounds |
| Cartridge/stylus configurations | Ortofon 2M Blue or Audio-Technica AT-VM95ML |
Although the review lists 78 RPM support, that speed alone does not make the supplied stylus appropriate for 78s. Rogers says 78s need a compatible cartridge because their wider grooves are unsuitable for a standard stylus.
Setup is part of the purchase
The review describes a carbon-fiber tonearm, acrylic platter, vibration-dampening feet, electronic speed control and switchable auto-stop. Its account of setup includes balancing the tonearm, removing transport screws, installing the platter and belt, fitting the cartridge and attaching the dust cover. These are review-reported details, not a substitute for the instructions supplied with a specific unit.

This is not a plug-and-play automatic player. Rogers calls out the anti-skate weight as irritating and says the deck requires setup. The auto-stop feature stops the record at the run-out groove but does not lift the tonearm; she advises leaving it switched off. Buyers who want the arm to return or lift automatically should not assume this feature provides that function.

What the review says about the sound and value
Rogers reports a lively, wide sound and praises the RT87’s detail retrieval, construction and value. Those are her listening impressions, not measurements or a controlled comparison. Her value case is captured in her own review: “The RT87 makes a great case for its loftier price — and then you pull it from its cardboard prison, assemble it, plug it in, and drop the needle. Suddenly, $799 starts to feel like something of a bargain.”

Her verdict, “This is a five-star deck through and through,” is likewise the reviewer’s assessment, not a laboratory rating or a consensus ranking. The review’s title asks whether it might be the best turntable under $1,000, but the article does not test the full category using a common protocol. It names the Rega Planar 3 RS and Technics SL13000G as more expensive alternatives and characterizes the Goldring GR3 as similarly priced with fewer premium features, without providing a detailed model-by-model comparison.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should consider the RT87?
The RT87 is most compelling for a listener who values substantial construction and the particular sound Rogers describes, is willing to set up a turntable, and already owns—or has budgeted for—a phono stage or compatible amplifier and speakers. It may be a poor fit if you want an all-in-one player, minimal setup, or automatic tonearm lifting at the end of a record.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Before choosing it over another deck near this price, compare the complete system cost, cartridge configuration, setup effort and automation, support for the records you own, and vibration-control design. The review offers a persuasive case for this model; it does not establish a definitive winner among every turntable below $1,000.
