Use the full model and product code when looking up instructions or parts rather than assuming that a similarly named ECAM machine is compatible.
The model is listed as discontinued by CHOICE. Its page shows a $999 figure, but that is the price displayed on that page, not a verified current offer. New stock, used prices, warranty terms and local repair support can vary by country and seller.

The figures below come from different sources and markets. They should not be merged into one universal specification: the Taiwanese distributor’s electrical and dimensional data differ from the context in an older European brochure.

The manufacturer’s approximately 2010 brochure describes a completely removable boiler and says this makes cleaning the inside easier, including areas that are normally difficult to reach. That is a manufacturer statement, not an independent durability test. The same brochure describes the Cappuccino System as mixing steam, air and milk to produce a creamy froth; treat that as product-language rather than a measured milk-quality result.
CHOICE’s detailed test results and expert rating are restricted to members on the surfaced model page. No public, attributable independent test result establishes a taste score, extraction comparison, reliability rate or ranking for this exact machine, so those numbers should not be inferred from the 15-bar specification.
How coffee and milk preparation work
Bean-to-cup coffee workflow
You fill the hopper with whole beans, fill the water tank, place a cup under the coffee outlet and select the desired coffee control. The machine grinds a dose, infuses it and dispenses the drink. The practical benefit is convenience and a compact footprint compared with buying a separate grinder and espresso machine. The trade-off is less control than a dedicated setup and more internal cleaning than a simple pod brewer.

The ESAM platform can also accommodate pre-ground coffee according to its operating design, but the exact dosing procedure and permitted quantity should be taken from the ESAM03.110.S manual. Do not assume that instructions for a later Magnifica S model use the same controls or limits.
Manual milk frothing
For a cappuccino or latte, brew coffee first, then switch to steam according to the model’s controls. Purge and position the frother as specified in the manual, introduce the steam tip into cold milk, and texture the milk by controlling depth and movement. You stop steaming before the milk overheats, wipe the nozzle and run the cleaning procedure after use. The machine does not automatically measure milk, texture it and dispense a finished milk drink for you.
CHOICE lists milk preparation as manual, and the old brochure calls the hardware a steam/air/milk Cappuccino System. That makes this model a better fit for someone willing to learn basic steam technique than for anyone seeking one-touch cappuccinos.

Before the first drink
- Confirm the rating plate matches your electrical supply. A unit marked 120 V/60 Hz is not interchangeable with a 220–240 V version.
- Download the exact ESAM03.110.S instructions from De’Longhi’s support listing and read the safety warnings before filling or powering the machine: De’Longhi ESAM03.110.S support.
- Wash removable water-contact components as directed, fill the tank with fresh water and load beans appropriate for an automatic grinder. Follow the manual’s first-use rinse and setup sequence rather than a generic Magnifica guide.
- Set the machine’s hardness information using the supplied water-hardness test if your regional manual calls for it. The setting determines how the descaling reminder is managed.
- Run the initial rinse and make a test coffee. Adjust the grind or strength only in the manner and while the grinder is running as the manual specifies; forcing an adjustment can damage the mechanism.
Routine after every milk drink
- Wipe milk residue from the frother immediately.
- Run the Cappuccino System’s post-use cleaning sequence in the manual; dried milk is harder to remove and can block the small steam passages.
- Empty or rinse the drip tray and grounds container when prompted, rather than waiting for overflow.
Regular internal care
Use the exact manual’s cleaning and descaling schedule. De’Longhi’s model-specific Australian/New Zealand spares page lists EcoDecalk, a water-hardness test, a cleaning brush, an ESAM infuser assembly, a water tank and a Magnifica frother tube: ESAM product-code 0132212086 parts listing. Stock and prices can change, and the listing is regional. Check your appliance code before ordering; a part that fits one ESAM03.110.S variant may not fit another.

The removable brewing components are a meaningful maintenance advantage. The brochure says the boiler is completely removable and that this improves access for cleaning. It does not eliminate the need for descaling, rinsing, cleaning the infuser and keeping the milk circuit clear.
Common owner questions and fault paths
“The coffee is weak”
De’Longhi’s support centre uses this exact symptom heading. Start with the basics: confirm that the hopper contains fresh beans, check that the grinder setting has not moved to a coarse or low-dose position, and make sure the machine is completing its rinse and brewing cycle. Use the ESAM03.110.S manual for the permitted strength and grind adjustments. Weak coffee can also reflect stale beans, a dirty infuser, scale or a recipe that simply contains more water than you prefer; do not treat the 15-bar label as a diagnosis.
“Lights are flashing or steadily on”
Indicator combinations are model-specific. Record which symbols are lit, whether they flash together or separately, and what the machine was doing. Then match that pattern in the exact-model manual or De’Longhi support guidance. Avoid resetting repeatedly if the machine is requesting descaling, an empty grounds container, a full drip tray or a missing component.

Descaling
Scale builds faster with hard water. When the machine requests descaling, use the descaler and water volume specified for this model, remove or protect the water filter if the manual instructs you to do so, and allow the complete rinse cycle to finish. Interrupting the cycle can leave descaler in the water path. De’Longhi’s support centre labels a dedicated “Guide: Descaling” resource; start there rather than following a generic recipe: Magnifica S help centre.

Cleaning the cappuccino maker
Milk residue is a hygiene issue as well as a performance issue. De’Longhi labels a “Guide: Cleaning the cappuccino maker after use.” Follow that procedure every time, including the specified purge and removable-part cleaning. If steam output drops, stop using the frother until the tip and air intake are clear; do not probe passages with a sharp object that could enlarge or damage them.
First-use or setup confusion
The same help centre provides a “Guide: Set Up and First Use.” Use it for the sequence of filling, priming, rinsing and selecting settings. Instructions for newer ECAM machines may show different buttons, menus or removable parts.

Because the model is discontinued, the seller’s description is not enough. Ask for photographs of the rating plate, brew group, water tank, hopper and frother, and request a video showing the machine powering on, grinding, brewing and producing steam. A polished exterior does not prove that the pump, grinder, seals or heater work.

Do not treat the $999 CHOICE listing as a target used price. Compare the seller’s tested condition, included equipment, return window and repair risk with other machines available in your market. A low sticker price can be poor value if the unit needs a grinder, infuser and heater.

How it compares with other coffee-machine choices
The most useful comparison is functional rather than brand-based. Before choosing an alternative, score each machine on the following axes:
- Availability: Is it currently sold new, or only through used listings?
- Milk workflow: Does it require a steam wand, provide assisted frothing, or dispense a complete milk recipe automatically?
- Coffee inputs: Can it use whole beans, pre-ground coffee, or only a proprietary format?
- Serviceability: Is the brew group removable, and are seals, tanks, infusers and milk parts sold in your region?
- Electrical and physical fit: Do voltage, frequency, width, depth and height match your kitchen?
- Ownership cost: Include descaler, filters where applicable, cleaning supplies and likely repair work—not just the purchase price.
The ESAM03.110.S is most defensible when you value grinding and brewing automation, accept manual milk work and can obtain a correctly rated, serviceable unit at a sensible used price. It is a poor match if you need guaranteed new-stock warranty coverage, a current service network or one-touch milk beverages.
What is established—and what is not
Established information includes the model’s discontinued status on CHOICE, the 1.8 L reservoir and stated 15-bar pump pressure reported there, the 20-second frothing-readiness figure, and the model-specific support and parts pages from De’Longhi. The Taiwanese distributor supplies a separate regional set of values: 200 g hopper, 1,350 W, 120 V/60 Hz and 280 × 364 × 400 mm.
Those specifications do not establish extraction temperature, drink taste, long-term reliability, noise, repair frequency or superiority over another machine. CHOICE’s detailed test evidence is member-only on the surfaced page, and no dated independent hands-on review result is publicly attributable here. Treat seller claims and generalized Magnifica reviews as insufficient proof for this exact ESAM model.
