Is the Call of Duty 3 PC port safe to mod? CoD3Recomp performance, compatibility and FAQ

CoD3Recomp is reasonable to experiment with, but it is not a security-audited or officially supported PC release. The Windows port is still in development, and its documented customization is limited mainly to configuration settings and console commands. Use the project’s release archive, keep it in an isolated folder, back up your files, and supply only your own legally obtained Call of Duty 3 Xbox 360 USA or Europe ISO. Treat downloaded third-party mods and unsigned binaries as untrusted unless you can verify their origin.

What the Call of Duty 3 PC port actually is

Call of Duty 3 is Treyarch’s 2006 console first-person shooter. It was released for consoles rather than as an official Windows game. CoD3Recomp is an unofficial project based on the Xbox 360 edition: it statically recompiles the Xbox 360 program for Windows and adds a PC renderer.

That distinction matters. You are not installing a finished Activision PC product or a conventional fan-made total conversion. You are running an in-development compatibility project that expects you to provide the original game data. The v0.4.0 release notes explicitly warn that bugs can occur, while earlier releases describe experimental options and active fixes.

Is there an official Windows release?

No official Windows edition is identified in the platform coverage associated with Call of Duty 3. CoD3Recomp is therefore an unofficial port, not a rediscovered retail PC build. Your legal right to create or use a game image depends on the law where you live and the ownership of your copy; the project does not supply the copyrighted game data.

How safe is it to mod?

“Safe” has two separate meanings here: safe for your computer and safe for your game files. The available project information establishes neither a formal malware audit nor a guarantee that arbitrary community modifications are harmless. It does establish a relatively contained way to experiment if you control the files and keep the installation separate.

What the evidence supports

  • The release archive should be obtained from the project’s own release page rather than a repack or mirror.
  • The executable, DLL files, configuration files and saves can be kept in a dedicated folder that is easy to remove.
  • Configuration edits and documented console commands are the supported experimentation surface.
  • Backups let you undo a setting change or restore a clean installation after a crash.

What is not guaranteed

  • There is no cited security audit of the executable, DLLs or user-created mods.
  • There is no stable package-based mod loader documented in the release notes.
  • There is no promise that an arbitrary third-party mod works with every build, mission, renderer option or Windows configuration.
  • An antivirus warning or unsigned-binary alert cannot be dismissed as harmless solely because the file is associated with a fan project.

If a download triggers a warning, stop and verify that the archive came from the project release page, compare its reported version with the release notes, and scan it with your normal security tools. Do not disable system protection just to force an unknown file to run.

Safe installation and rollback procedure

  1. Prepare your own game image. CoD3Recomp v0.4.0 requires a Call of Duty 3 Xbox 360 ISO from the USA or Europe release. The project does not include that ISO. Do not use an image obtained from an unverified download site.
  2. Download the port from the project release page. Avoid repacks that replace DLLs, add launchers or bundle unrelated “fixes.” Preserve the original archive so you can compare files later.
  3. Create a dedicated installation folder. Keep the port outside unrelated game libraries and do not overwrite another Call of Duty installation. A separate folder makes it straightforward to quarantine or delete a problematic build.
  4. Copy or point the installer to the required ISO. Follow the release’s own naming and path requirements. The required source is the Xbox 360 USA/Europe image, not a PS2 image.
  5. Launch once before changing anything. Confirm that the unmodified build starts, reaches the front end and loads a mission. This gives you a known-good baseline.
  6. Back up configuration and saves. Copy the relevant .ini and .cfg files and your save data to a separate location. Make another backup before testing an experimental renderer or command.
  7. Change one variable at a time. Record the original value, test a single setting, and revert it if the game crashes, flickers or stalls. This is faster than trying to diagnose several simultaneous edits.
  8. Roll back cleanly. Restore the backed-up configuration first. If the executable or DLL set was replaced, remove the port folder and unpack a fresh copy rather than mixing files from different releases.

What “modding” currently supports

The documented feature set is closer to an enhanced configuration layer than to a mature mod ecosystem. Version 0.2 lists windowed and borderless-fullscreen modes, resolution scaling, texture filtering, anisotropic filtering, MSAA and FXAA, vertical sync, field of view, mouse sensitivity, gamepad and keyboard bindings, an FPS counter and renderer statistics.

  • map_restart — restart the current map.
  • cg_fov 80 — set the field of view to 80.
  • timescale 0.5 — run the game at half speed for testing.
  • god and noclip — invulnerability and free movement cheats.
  • give all — grant the listed test equipment.
  • seta com_maxfps 60 — set the game’s frame-rate limit to 60.

These commands demonstrate that the port can be tuned and inspected. They do not prove that it accepts packaged scripts, injected code or the broad catalog of mods associated with other Call of Duty games. Keep command experiments reversible, and restore the original configuration if a change survives a restart unexpectedly.

Performance: can it deliver 60 fps?

CoD3Recomp has a documented 60-fps game cap, but that is a limit, not a universal performance promise. The v0.4.0 notes report a 1080p forest test rising from about 91 frames per second in v0.3.0 to 95–108 fps after CPU-scheduling optimization. The hardware used for every figure is not identified, so these are developer test results rather than a guaranteed result for your PC.

Evidence What it tells you What it does not tell you
About 91 fps in the v0.3.0 1080p forest test Provides a baseline from the project’s own comparison. It is not a minimum specification or a result for every mission.
95–108 fps in the v0.4.0 1080p forest test Shows an improvement after CPU-scheduling work. It does not guarantee 95 fps on your hardware or in every scene.
60-fps cap, reported with 1440p output, MSAA up to 8x and anisotropic filtering Shows the renderer exposes modern display and image-quality controls. It does not mean every combination will remain stable.

For a fair test, start with the default renderer, use the same resolution and anti-aliasing settings, and compare a repeatable scene. If frame pacing is poor despite a high counter, try the documented cap, disable experimental options and test again. Avoid treating one forest benchmark as a specification for the campaign as a whole.

Known compatibility problems

Level-loading waits

Version 0.2 documents a rare wait during level loading in the game’s graphics driver. The listed response is to restart the game. If a load appears frozen, allow a reasonable amount of time, then close and relaunch rather than repeatedly changing files while the process is stuck.

Memory leaks and texture flicker

Release 0.2.1 fixed a physical-memory leak and texture-update flicker. That correction shows why reports from older builds may not describe v0.4.0 accurately. When troubleshooting, note the exact release number and avoid copying old DLLs or configuration files into a newer installation.

Starting another mission from inside a mission

The v0.4.0 notes still report that starting a second level from inside an active level can hang roughly half the time. Start the desired mission from the front end instead. If you are already in a level, restart the game before selecting the next mission.

Unspecified hardware and controller coverage

The project does not publish a reproducible minimum or recommended PC specification, and it does not formally guarantee every controller, renderer option or Windows setup. If input fails, test the documented keyboard or pad bindings before adding external remapping software; external layers add another variable to an unfinished port.

CoD3Recomp versus PCSX2

PCSX2 is the practical fallback when you prefer emulation of the PlayStation 2 release. It requires the normal PS2 game image and BIOS used by the emulator. The available PCSX2 compatibility entry describes Call of Duty 3 as “very, very CPU intensive” in its test context and recommends a current nightly build.

Factor CoD3Recomp native Windows port PCSX2 PS2 emulation
Game data User supplies a legally obtained Xbox 360 USA or Europe ISO. User supplies a PS2 game image and BIOS under PCSX2’s normal requirements.
Rendering and speed Native Direct3D 11 renderer; the project reports 95–108 fps in one 1080p forest test. Compatibility notes call the game very CPU intensive; results depend on the emulator build and hardware.
Tweaking Resolution, filtering, anti-aliasing, V-sync, FOV, input settings, FPS display and console commands. Emulator-wide graphics, controller and game-fix controls, plus the usual PCSX2 configuration options.
Stability caveats In development, with documented level-transition and graphics-driver waits. Windows graphics compatibility can still cause crashes; save states are not guaranteed to remain compatible across PCSX2 versions.

The native port is the more direct route for someone who owns the Xbox 360 version and wants Windows-native rendering. PCSX2 offers mature emulator tooling and a different console version, but it can be substantially CPU-heavy. Neither option turns an original game image into a guaranteed plug-and-play experience.

Practical troubleshooting checklist

  • Won’t start: confirm that the archive is complete, the required Xbox 360 ISO is present, and files from another release have not been mixed in.
  • Black screen or graphics corruption: return to default resolution, anti-aliasing and filtering settings, then re-enable one option at a time.
  • Mission transition hangs: launch the mission from the front end or restart the game, as specified for v0.4.0.
  • Texture flicker or memory growth: update from an old build, remove stale DLLs and test a clean installation; the 0.2.1 notes identify fixes for these symptoms.
  • Unexpected command behavior: restore the backed-up .ini or .cfg file and remove experimental console changes before testing again.
  • Antivirus or SmartScreen warning: verify the source and scan the archive. Do not assume the warning is a false positive, because no independent security audit is documented.

Bottom-line safety verdict

CoD3Recomp is suitable for cautious experimentation, not blind installation. Its safest use is a clean, isolated folder containing the project release, your own Xbox 360 USA/Europe image, backed-up saves and reversible configuration changes. The documented console and graphics settings are useful, but the project does not yet establish a dependable third-party mod framework or a security guarantee. Expect ongoing fixes, keep the release number visible when reporting a problem, and use PCSX2 as an alternative when emulation better fits your hardware or game copy.
