What is known about the revival—and what is not
GamesRadar+ reported on October 5, 2026, that the revival had entered playtesting and that fans could join. That is evidence of reported project activity, not an assessment of the downloadable files. Earlier coverage described the effort as a community attempt to revive the canceled, China-market Borderlands Online using a recovered game build; that background does not authenticate a current installer. GamesRadar+’s October 5, 2026 report and PC Gamer’s earlier coverage do not establish a security verdict.

The available evidence does not establish a canonical current download page, a release-specific checksum, a verified publisher certificate identity, or independent security analysis tied to a particular file hash. That means there is not enough evidence to call a specific current build safe—or malicious. Do not infer safety from the project’s reported activity, a familiar hosting site, or the number of people discussing it.
How to verify a fan-made game download
1. Establish the source before downloading
Start from a project page or account whose identity you have verified independently, then follow its release link. A Discord post, video description, or familiar file-hosting service is not proof that a file is genuinely maintained by the project. If you cannot establish the project’s identity and find its own release information, stop rather than guessing at a download location.

2. Match the file to the release information
Check the filename and version against the project’s release notes. If maintainers publish a cryptographic hash, calculate the downloaded file’s hash locally and compare it character for character with the value on the independently verified project page. No release-specific hash for the current revival build is established here, so there is no verified hash to provide or comparison to claim.
3. Inspect executable signatures
On Windows, open the executable’s Properties and inspect its digital-signature details when a signature is present. Microsoft’s SignTool can also verify an Authenticode signature; its documented example is SignTool verify /pa MyControl.exe. Verification can show whether a signed file has changed since signing and identify its signer, but you still need to determine whether that signer is one the project identifies and whether the signer is trustworthy. 4. Assess warnings; do not reflexively bypass them
Microsoft says a SmartScreen “not commonly downloaded” warning reflects a file’s reputation and is not, by itself, a conclusive malware finding. Consider the file’s source and signing status before deciding what to do. A reputation warning does not establish that the file is safe, either; do not bypass it simply to launch the game. 5. Scan the download before running it
Update Microsoft Defender or another reputable antivirus product, then scan the downloaded archive and the extracted executables. Microsoft recommends using trusted download sources and current security software. A clean scan is one useful check, not proof that the file came from the genuine project or a guarantee that it is safe. Microsoft’s unwanted-software guidance covers these general precautions.

6. Stop if the evidence conflicts
Do not run the files if release details conflict, the signer is unexpected, a security product detects a threat, or you cannot establish the download’s provenance. Seek clarification from the project’s verified maintainers or the security vendor that raised the alert. Do not treat an unrelated launcher’s repair or verification feature as authentication: Epic Games Launcher’s file verification checks and repairs games in its own library, not an unrelated fan-made installer. Epic’s file-verification instructions describe that library-specific function.
